KEY BLOCK----- *National * --Chris Matthews discusses NY Times article this weekend which looks at Republican attack machine against HRC. Says NYT reports looked at focus groups set up by Karl Rove Super PAC Crossroads which gathered about 50 voters representing groups that it believes can be persuaded to vote against HRC. The group was made up of an all-white group of young men, low income adults, married mothers, and politically moderate women. Shows as attacking HRC as untrustworthy, secretive, scandal-ridden, as well as rich and out of touch. Perry Bacon joins the show and says the GOP is trying to capitalize on polls which show that people already question HRC’s honesty and trustworthiness so that Jeb or Marco can stay more positive. Matthews says the GOP just likes to bash HRC. Michelle Bernard says that’s not smart and she questions what we see coming out of these focus groups. Says HRC has made some foolhardy statements such as, we were dead broke coming out of the White House, but HRC is not a Mitt Romney in pantsuit – she has always been a champion for women, children, and the underclass. Voters will look at it through the lens of, whose policies will be better for me. Says that everything else won’t hurt HRC too much. Bernard says HRC has said she will do something with the tax code to incentivize profit sharing – that is something that people will legitimately attack her on. Bacon says the email issue itself is not going to win the Republicans the election, polls show that issue is not very strong. Says Republicans need to peel some voters away from Obama who currently has very high approval. Bacon says that one way they can do this is by attacking her personality since most people don’t vote strictly on policy. Thinks this is a smart angle for the Republicans to test. Matthews says in 2008 when HRC became very emotional, she came across better when she was on the defensive. Bernard says it’s a big risk for the Republicans to take because people will constantly be targeting women, especially women of color who traditionally vote democrat who are going to like that HRC has broken through the glass ceiling. Says she called for higher taxes and more regulation of Wall Street and lashed out at Republicans. Shows clip of HRC saying Scott Walker stomps on worker’s rights. Lou Dobbs says she wants minimum wage increases and wants companies to share their profits with employees. Says HRC promoted growth through higher taxes and profit sharing as well as advocating higher wages. Shows clip of HRC saying that wages need to rise to keep up with checks. Jonathan Hoenig joins the show and criticizes HRC for talking about fairness, saying she talked about fair market rather than free market and says that her version of that is the government having a hand in everything. Calls it “full economic dictatorship.” Says it’s worse than Obama. Says Obama’s efforts have made the rich richer and the middle class even further down the line. Hoenig claims that the country is primed for HRC’s policies and we are in trouble because her speech reflected the economic views of many Americans right now. Kennedy says that places like Venezuela show why HRC’s plan doesn’t work. Hoenig says HRC will decide how the economy is going to run and who is going to get helped and who will get hurt. Says she targeted Scott Walker and pledged to stand behind corporate profit sharing. Shows clip of HRC saying she believes in and will fight for profit sharing. Says HRC slammed republicans during her La Raza speech for not speaking out against Donald Trump sooner. Mark Preston joins the show and says HRC is moving to the left and some think she has been pushed that way by Bernie Sanders. Host says HRC talked about imposing more regulations on financial institutions and host wonders how this will be possible since financial institutions are so strong and HRC is seen as a friend of Wall Street. Preston says HRC has done very well with people on Wall Street. Preston says it doesn’t matter all that much because the executive branch still have to work with Congress. Shows clip of HRC saying that Republican governors like Walker have been stomping on workers’ rights. Says she will fight back against the attacks. Charlie Cook joins the show and says HRC is running for the Democrat nomination and talking about the appropriate themes and Scott Walker is doing the same for his party. The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell <http://mms.tveyes.com/PlaybackPortal.aspx?SavedEditID=71e3d5c2-ddf9-492c-9ca3-a2336e08c158>. 2015 07 13,Hillary Clinton;Scott Walker,Commentary,National,HRC attack on Scott Walker.mp4 --Shows clip of Gene Sperling saying the worst thing is when a president lobs in too many policies at once and no one can understand them. Lawrence O’Donnell says this is the justification for very few specifics in HRC’s economic speech. Quotes what he says are all specific policy proposals in the entire speech including closing loopholes that reward companies for sending jobs and profits overseas, funding scientific and medical research that spawns innovative companies and create entire new industries, closing carried interest loophole that lets wealthy financiers pay an artificially low rate, providing universal pre-k, going beyond Dodd-Frank to simplify financial institutions and make them less risky. O’Donnell says the rest of the speech was made up of attacks on Republicans and boiler-plate speechmaking that could be put into any speech by any politician. Shows clip of HRC saying we must raise incomes for hardworking Americans so they can have a middle class life and that will be her mission. Shows clip of HRC commenting on Jeb Bush saying American workers need to work longer hours. O’Donnell says Bernie Sanders talks much more specifically. E.J. Dionne joins the show and says HRC is thinking of a general and Bernie is focused on the primary. Dionne defends HRC saying she talked about specifics like profit sharing and overtime and family leave. Says what HRC was doing was saying that the Republicans want to make it about growth and she’s for that too, but she is for more fair, sustainable growth. Says she is challenging them on the issue of stagnating wages. She wants it to be a bidding war for the votes of working class and middle class voters. So many of the issues she’s had have been about issues. Seems to be taking a leaf out of WJC’s book and giving a whole bunch of policy speeches and banking on the fact that voters care more about their wallets than any other issues. O’Donnell says she went on for 45 minutes and most of it was a drone and Bernie is more engaging. Charlie Cook says no normal person is watching a 45 minute speech by any politician. Cook says there’s nothing a campaign strategist likes more than their opponent being very specific because it allows for attacks. Says income inequality is not a dangerous place to go and it goes beyond the Democratic base. Stuart Stevens says HRC seems to be the most joyless candidate to run for president ever. Says it’s like someone made her go say these things and Jeb seems to be having the time of his life compared to HRC. O’Donnell says it’s the tension of being the frontrunner because there’s so much pressure to be cautious. Stevens says since January HRC has done nothing but lose votes. Says when Howard Dean was the front runner he seemed to be having the time of his life, says Bernie seems to be having a lot more fun. Dionne says HRC is being very careful, maybe more careful than she should be. Thinks she is too cautious with the press but she is a policy wonk and she’s banking on the voters wanting that.
