VILLA ALTACHIARA
Villa Altachiara was built in 1876 by Henry Herbert, fourth Earl of Carnarvon, and
inhabited by his son George Herbert, $Ch Earl of Carnarvon. George Herbert was an
English aristocrat best known as the financier of the excavation of the Egyptian New
Kingdom Pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. He employed
the British Egyptologist Howard Carter who discovered Tutankhamun's tomb on
November 4, 1922. The Villa takes its name from the translation of "Highclere Castle",
country seat of the Earls of Camarvon.
Since 1932, Villa Altachiara has hosted many celebrities such as the writers Virgilio
Brocchi and Salvatore Gotta, Paola Masino and Massimo Bontempelli, Edoardo e
Virginia Agnelli, Lord Trossi, Guglielmo Marconi or politicians as Winston Churchill,
Pietro Badoglio and, more recently, Bettino Craxi and Silvio Berlusconi.
The Villa is referred to on cadastral map 411 (cadastral number 356 of the General Land
Office Urbano, piazza della Liberty 2) and is surrounded by an extensive green area
composed of cadastral maps 407, 408, 409, 412, 420, 498, 499, 522, 525, 526 and 410
(with a one-family house at the side).
The Villa is connected to Portofino's square through a driveway leading through woods
and lawn, with a gate at its entrance. It is located on the hill overlooking the harbour, in
a predominant position with a view over village, gulf and open sea, even beyond
Portofino Cape. Its location is indeed extraordinarily beautiful, with unique panoramic
views.
Its static conditions and outside maintenance are excellent and the interiors have been
designed by a great international architect (Mongiardino), including the planning,
finishings and furniture. It has a heliport also suitable for big vehicles landing, in
addition to a swimming pool overlooking both the harbour and the open sea. There is a
technogym-equipped gym with sauna.
The extensive park vegetation is typically Mediterranean, in addition to many other
valuable species. In fact, besides a large number of citrus trees (lemon, orange, tangerine
trees and cedars), we also find holm-oaks, cypresses, century-old cluster pines, palm
trees, mimosa trees, laurel trees, butterbushes, agave trees, rosemary trees and an orchard
(apples, pears, kiwis, plums). The park is provided with an automated sprinkling system.
The Villa has also access to breath-taking panoramic views through walkways.
