Laurel will be sending out the minutes of the meeting in the next few weeks, so consider this more of an informal update while the news is fresh. We began the meeting with Teresa’s report on recent developments at the college. Classes started on Thursday and she reported that early estimates suggest a possible gain of 20 new students this fall (total 418); still too early to know the final retention number. Knox has been rising in the national rankings (e.g., from 81 to 72 in U.S. News and World Report; from 13 to 11 in the Washington Monthly). She learned yesterday that the Mellon Foundation had made a $800,000 gift to the college to support a suite of initiatives designed to strengthen first-generation and low-income students' academic development and educational attainment. The committee then had the opportunity to discuss the outcome of the August retreat in Chicago, the draft agendas for the board and committee meetings for October, and the board and committee work plans. I then reported on my research on staff support in the president’s office at select peer institutions, and Teresa shared her thoughts on next steps. First step will be to find a strong successor to Denise in the position of executive assistant, and Teresa has a couple of good finalists she is now considering. When we meet in October, I’ll brief you on what I learned about other colleges and what additional support we might consider. The committee then approved the membership for the Nominating Committee for 2015-2016: Dave Schulz, chair; Laurel Andrew, Ellie Hartog, Keith Maskus, and Sue Zucker. This summer, Mark Kleine asked to step down as chair of the Facilities and Infrastructure Committee (he’ll remain on the board), so I’ve asked the Nominating Committee to bring forward one or more nominees for the board to consider at its October meeting. We’re all grateful to Mark for the excellent service he’s given the college as chair of the Facilities and Infrastructure Committee, and I appreciate him staying on as chair until the October meeting when we’ll appoint a new chair to serve for the remainder of the year. Next, the Executive Committee endorsed the establishment of the Trustee Task Force on Socially Responsible Investing. I’m attaching the charge to the task force. Thanks to Joe Bastian for chairing and to Joe Glossberg, Isabelle Goossen, Jan Koran, Steve Luetger, and Jerry Vovis for agreeing to serve. We look forward to considering a proposal from the task force at the February board meeting. Finally, Teresa briefed us on two issues related to the Arts Building – the status of fundraising and the construction schedule/costs. As you know, the board voted in June to begin construction when we had raised 90% of the hard costs for the building. Teresa—and Keith—made the case to the Executive Committee that we should begin construction in early October—before the October board meeting. We now have 82% of the funds raised, rather than the required 90%. After hearing the arguments for the administration’s request, the committee was persuaded that beginning construction in early October made good sense. *We decided to bring this issue to the full board for its review and action at a special telephonic meeting of the board, to be called in September.* At that meeting, Teresa and Keith will be asking for an exception to the general practice of having 90% of the funds in hand before construction can begin.
