(MM) (FBI) Leverock, Michael D. (MM) (FBI) Subject: help on a piece for The New Yorker I appreciate that very much, Jim. rom the beginning: I'm a longtime staff writer at The New Yorker. I've become interested in.= and the case of Jeffrey Epstein, and am writing a long piece for the magazine. As you no doubt know, Virginia has filed affidavits in the Crime Victims Rights Act litigation, filed by attorneys Brad Edwards and Paul Cassell. They have challenged the agreement the federal government reached with Epstein, which enabled him in 2008 to plead to state, not federal crimes, and serve a sentence of thirteen months--rather than what would likely have been a much longer sentence, had he been prosecuted for federal crimes. As I understand, from preliminary reporting, the FBI carried out a diligent, extensive investigation. But it has never been clear why the case against Epstein was resolved in the way it was. What is clear is that Epstein's legal team mounted a singularly aggressive campaign, first, to thwart the investigation, and second, to subvert the prosecution. If I were able to speak with Special Agent Jason Richards--and anyone else whom you would suggest--I would want to ask questions about that process. What they learned, what they encountered, what their perceptions are. If necessary, they could speak on an off-the-record basis. I would hope it might be possible to put some statements on the record, at the end, but that would of course require the FBI's permission. If you would like to discuss this, you can reach me at I am going out of town tomorrow, but will be back next Monday, July 9. Happy Fourth! Best, Connie EFTA01660355
