*CNN's Dana Bash Covers McCain's "Unusual" Trip to Canada, Dobbs Blasts
McCain's "Pandering to Business Special Interest Groups"* (CNN 06/20/08
7:00pm)
LOU DOBBS: Senator McCain, pandering to business special interest groups,
with his unqualified support for NAFTA. But the Senator didn't deliver his
pro-Free Trade pitch in this country, where millions of jobs have been lost
as a result of those agreements, instead he went to Canada to talk to their
business elites [...]
BASH: John McCain's visit here to Canada was quite unusual. It was a
campaign trip where the candidate insisted it wasn't about politics.
[...]
[Dana Bash asking McCain a question]
BASH: Correct me if I am wrong, this is a trip that was put together and
executed by your presidential campaign not your Senate office, so how is it
not political?
MCCAIN: Because we didn't feel it was appropriate for the taxpayers, while I
am the nominee of my party, to pay for a trip that would have accrued to the
cost of the taxpayers.
[...]
BASH: Now, McCain often points to his extensive experience traveling around
the world as a Senator, it's one of the reasons he thinks voters should
elect him. He said today he is going to continue traveling abroad during the
presidential campaign, but if his trip Canada was any example it's a pretty
tough task for a candidate to travel anywhere during the heat of the
campaingn and insist it's not about politics.
*Pat Buchanan: McCain's Stance on NAFTA May Cost Him the Election *(MSNBC
06/20/08 06:15pm)
RACHEL MADDOW: McCain was in Canada today talking up our relations with our
northerly neighbor. […] After his appearance McCain released this pretty
harsh statement:
[Visual of Quote]
"For Months, Barack Obama said that he would 'make sure that we renegotiate'
NAFTA, demanding unilateral changes and threatened to unilaterally withdraw
if he did not get his way. Barack Obama knew better. America has not had a
protectionist president since Herbert Hoover, but Barack Obama held his
position anyway to further his cynical political purposes in the primary
campaign. Now he claims: 'I'm not a big believer in doing things
unilaterally.' Barack Obama should know words matter – especially in a
campaign based on rhetoric rather than a record of accomplishment."
MADDOW: […] Who's vote is McCain going after with the pro-NAFTA argument?
JOAN WALSH: […] I'm not sure this helps McCain either. I think that McCain
is the one who's really looking like the flip flopper especially with this
crazy flip flop on offshore oil drilling.
[…]
PAT BUCHANAN: I don't know what McCain is doing! For Heaven's sake. It's a
50 to 40 issue negative nationally. You take Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania
they think NAFTA is a four-letter word. And he's going up to Canada
praising the trade deal when we've lost 3 and a half manufacturing jobs
under Bush alone. If I were Obama I would hammer him on this. Frankly he's
putting at risk his election with this nonsense.
[…]
*Dobbs Calls McCain "Mr. Free Trade", Blasts Carly Fiorina on
Outsourcing*(CNN 06/20/08 7:10pm)
LOU DOBBS: Well Senator McCain is certainly working to earn the title "Mr.
Free Trade." In addition to his enthusiastic support for NAFTA the Senator
is also voted for all sorts of trade deals. Voting for trade deals with
Oman, Singapore, Chile, Vietnam, Central American nations, and African
nations. And just in case there's any doubt, back in December Senator McCain
said he would seek deals with more countries, saying, "I'm the biggest
free-marketer and free-trader you will ever see." Senator McCain's position
on free trade and it's impact on working people in this country and our
middle class shouldn't be much of a surprise when we consider just who's
giving the Senator economic advice. None other than Carly Fiorina, the
former CEO of HP. She presided over the thousands of layoffs at HP and was
ultimately fired herself. But not before she recieved a $21 million dollar
severance package and more than a half million dollars in mortgage
assistance. And it was Carly Fiorina who defended outsourcing of American
middle class jobs to cheap overseas labor markets by saying, "There is no
job that is America's god-given right anymore."

*Fox News' Carl Cameron Says McCain Has Been "Inconsistent" on Offshore
Drilling* (FNC 06/20/08 6:00pm)
JIM ANGLE: They say what goes around comes around. And today the two
presidential candidates proved how fast that can happen. Slamming each other
for basically the same thing, changing positions on economic issues [...]
CARL CAMERON: Dueling economic events. Barack Obama with Democratic
Governors in Chicago ramped up his opposition to John McCain's proposed
expansion of offshore oil drilling while John McCain in Canada met with
business leaders, intensified his attacks on Obama as an isolationist,
threatening to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
JOHN MCCAIN: Demanding unilateral changes and threatening to abrogate an
agreement that has increased trade and prosperity is nothing more than
retreating behind protectionist walls. [...]
CAMERON: Both candidates portray themselves as honest genuine politicians.
But the truth is McCain has been inconsistent on offshore drilling and
Obama's been inconsistent on trade. Perhaps a better way to put it is that
they are both true politicians therefore apt to shift their positions.
*Senator Hutchison Defends McCain's Offshore Drilling Plan, Confirms McCain
Has Inklings to Flip Flop on ANWR Drilling Too* (FNC 06/20/08 5:00pm)
MEGYN KELLY: Senator Hutchison Barack Obama recently, or just said today,
that John McCain's plan for offshore drilling, something that many Americans
seem to favor according to the polls, "makes no sense at all." Because he
says "it wouldn't give us any appreciable savings until 2030." So what do
you say about that?
KAY BAILEY HUTCHISON: Well, what makes no sense at all is that we twiddle
our thumbs while people are paying higher and higher gasoline prices, higher
prices for food in the food stores, that's what doesn't make sense. In fact,
I think it would have an immediate impact in this respect, we know that the
futures, speculators, are driving prices up because it's very clear that
Congress is doing nothing to produce more energy and therefore bigger supply
for the greater demand. And so prices are going to keep going up. So the
speculators are making prices go up when the fundamentals aren't there.
KELLY: Ok, there's a little bit of disagreement on that speculation issue
because some people say no, speculators are in fact keeping the cost down.
But I want to really get your reaction to the how much savings people would
feel in the short term if we were to do offshore drilling. If we were to
begin it right away.
HUTCHISON: What I'm trying to say is that I think the speculators would see
that prices are going to start going down over the next five or six years
because it will take a little while to be drilling but if we have the
speculators out of the market, it will bring prices down very quickly. And
that is the good news about John McCain's proposal. That we're going to have
production, the states will be able to get royalties from it, it is an
incentive for the states to do it. He is also proposing more nuclear power,
which would bring down the cost of electricity. All of these proposals that
he's making are going to produce more energy. The problem with the Democrats
is they don't have any new energy in their plans.
KELLY: Ok, let me ask you about ANWR. It's something that John McCain has
long opposed for an awful long time but now he seems to be opening the door,
indicating he just might change his position on that. Some of his critics
say he may just be pandering to the voters. What do you say to that?
HUTCHISON: Well, I think, when you start looking at where ANWR is and where
the part that you would drill is, it's a very small section, it's a grassy
tundra, 70 degrees below zero, and the people who have been advertisin g
against it just haven't been there. John McCain has been there. He has said
that he wouldn't do it. But I think he's beginning to see that if we have an
overall goal in our country of energy independence for America, which means
national security and economic security for our country in the next 10 or 15
years, that we're gonna have to do some things environmentally safe,
protecting our environment, but nevertheless producing more while we are
getting the other kinds of renewables and types of energy that we know will
be in the future. But are not in abundance now.

*Obama Camp Accuses McCain of Flip-Flopping on Immigration* (CNN 06/18/08
4:35pm)
WOLF BLITZER: Barack Obama […] electing to declined the federal funds for
the general election has prompted charges of flip-flopping. […] Obama's camp
says John McCain has contradictions of his own. […] The McCain campaign
basically says there are two Barack Obamas on these various issues, bill.
BILL SCHNEIDER: Well […]the Obama campaign says back at you. They say there
are two McCains on the issue of illegal immigration. On Wednesday night,
John McCain held a private meeting with more than 150 Chicago-area Hispanic
leaders. According to the Associated Press, several people who were at the
meeting said McCain assured them he would push for comprehensive immigration
reform if he's elected president. In 2007, McCain's sponsorship of
comprehensive immigration reform angered conservatives and very nearly
derailed his presidential campaign. At a republican debate in January,
McCain was asked whether he would still vote for his original measure.
[clip of McCain]
JOHN MCCAIN: no, i would not. Because we know what the situation is today.
People want the borders secured first.
SCHNEIDER: McCain's critics were reassured.
SCHNIEDER: after the chicago meeting, the Obama campaign's communications
director charged McCain with trying to have it both ways.
[audio clip and text from Robert Gibbs]
SCHNEIDER: right now, McCain is getting just over a third of the Hispanic
vote nationwide. Last time Bush got about 40%. McCain's got to keep
conservatives happy while making sure his Hispanic support doesn't collapse.
How is he going to do it? His campaign says he will be addressing several
major Hispanic groups in the next month.
SCHNEIDER: We asked the McCain campaign for a […] They [Tucker Bounds] said,
"Despite the wildly misinformed opinions of Barack Obama's spokesman, John
McCain fundamentally believes that we need to secure our border, and then
move forward to address the need for immigration reform in a respectful and
compassionate manner that recognizes we are all God's children. That's his
position yesterday, today, and every other day, before all the groups he
meets with."
*Dobbs Criticizes McCain's "Late Night Meeting" with Latino Leaders on
Immigration Reform* (CNN 06/20/08 7:20pm)
LOU DOBBS: Senator McCain is trying to have it both ways on the issue of
illegal immigration as well. He's doing it by pandering of course to
ethnocentric interest groups. He assured in Chicago Hispanic leaders at a
late night meeting that he would help push through legislation giving
immigration reform a top priority, giving Amnesty to millions of illegal
aliens [...]

*Chuck Hagel's Statement that He Would "Think About" Accepting a VP
Invitation from Obama is an Example of Disunity Among Republicans *(MSNBC
06/20/08 05:57pm)
DAVID SCHUSTER: An associated press interview this afternoon with Republican
Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska. […] He was asked about if he was offered to
be Barack Obama's running mate, and he said if it would occur I'd have to
think about it. You'd have to consider it. It's the only thing you could
do. Why wouldn't you?
JILL ZUCKMAN: That is so devastating. It's just so devastating. He was one
of Senator McCain's closest friends in the Senate. They are both Vietnam
veterans, they're both highly decorated. The war has just split them apart.
And you can see how estranged they are by the fact that he would say
something like this. And on top of that Senator Hagel's wife has made a
contribution to Senator Obama's presidential campaign. It looks like the
whole Hagel family might be moving in the Obama direction. I think its kind
of a sad thing to see that friendship broken apart.
[…]
MICHELLE BERNARD: The more important story about Chuck Hagel is really what
we see happening in the Republican Party. We've been talking about this for
several months. There is disunity in the Republican Party. We've heard so
many people say that the party as a whole will come and everyone will rally
around John McCain, but we still don't see that happening. And John McCain
has a lot of work to do, not only within his base but also outside his base.
And I think Chuck Hagel's statement today really exemplifies just how much
work he has to do within the Republican Party. If he wants to win all the
states that George Bush won in 2004, Chuck Hagel's statement today made it
even more difficult for him. He's got a lot of work ahead of him to do.

*"CBS Evening News": There is No Such Thing as Clean Coal *(CBS 06/20/08
06:50pm)
WYATT ANDREWS: Coal is by far the dirtiest way America makes electric energy
but you wouldn't know that from this ad campaign funded by industry. A
campaign promising a future of clean coal. And its not just industry, the
Presidential candidates are also pushing clean coal.
[…]
MCCAIN: "We can have clean coal technology."
[…]
JAMES HANSON: there is no such thing as clean coal today.
ANDREWS: James Hanson, NASA's expert on global warming says all coal plants,
even Tampa Electric, still emit millions of tons of carbon dioxide, the most
threatening greenhouse gas.
HANSON: There's no coal plant that captures the carbon dioxide and that's
the main long-term pollutant.
ANDREWS: […] America's efforts to sequester carbon have stalled. The
department of energy planned to fund a plant […] but pulled its funding when
the price became to high. […] Florida's governor Charlie Crist even helped
pull the plug on two clean coal plants because he says without a carbon
solution quit clean coal.
CHARLIE CRIST: Until that time comes we want to develop more solar more
