In addition to providing s ome natura 1 filtration, this arrang em ent has th e ad vantage of separating m ost of the m arine organism s from the water intake. In som e cases, subsurface intakes m ay be evaluated and re gulated as groundwater sources. The use of subsurface in takes offers a distinct en vironm ental advantage b ecause the ecological im pact associated with impingem ent and entrain ment of marine life is virtually elim inated. However, subsurface designs should consider th eir potential n egativ e im pact on nearb y fresh groundwater aquifers. Vertica 1 Beach Wells — Vertical beach wells are shallow in EFTA01007569 take wells that m ake use of beach sand or other geolog is structure as a filter medium. Beach wells can be an econom ical alternative to open sea intakes for desalinati on plants with capacities less than 20,000 cubic meters per d ay (m 3 /d) (5 m illion gallons per day, mgd). Th ey have the ad vantage of delive ring "pre-f ilte red " water that m ay greatly redu ce additional pretreatm ent requirem ents. A vertical b each well co nsists a non-m etallic casing, well screen, and vertical to rbine p ump. Site suitability is determ fined by drilling test wells and conducting a detailed hydrogeologic investigatio n to dete rm fine the f orm ation transm EFTA01007570 issivity and substrate characteristics. It is preferred to locate beach wells as c lose to th e coa stlin e as pos sible, and th em aximum yield from individual w ells range from 0.1 to 4000 m 3 /d (0.1 to 1.0 m gd) .
