Dear Jeffrey,
There is some fun stuff going on, mixed in with a substantial amount of BS too!
Joscha and I had a fun debate on a panel -- or a violent disagreement, depending
on your perspective. Joscha wanted to define observers and agents as high-level,
complex systems, and I wanted to say an observer is just a system that gets information
about its environement, and an agent is a system that acts on its environment.
They didn't have to get out the steel cage, but it was entertaining.
There has been a lot of interest about trying to make formal the idea of systems
that discover and take advantage of patterns in their environment, quite similar to
discussions that you and I have had. There are different perspectives about this,
but people broadly agree that this is an important avenue to follow.
There remains a surprising amount of disagreement on foundations of quantum
mechanics and the quantum measurement problem.
There has been a lot of fruitless debate on what is an 'event,' and what it means for an event to 'happen.'
There should be a good session on quantum gravity, which I will sadly miss because I have to leave tomorrow
morning. Then there will be a session on consciousness, which I will happily miss.
Hope all goes well there,
Seth
