NSA scolded in open Senate hearing
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=bJDH5O5sTITrwg1ZUXyUmg
The nation's intelligence chiefs on Thursday acknowledged they would
like to put the phone records of every American in a "lockbox," that
there is no legal ceiling as to what they can collect, and that there
is justification to collect other bulk data - like medical and
business records - with court approval. Thursday's Senate
Intelligence hearing was the first one to be open to the public since
former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden launched his
long string of leaks to American and foreign news organizations about
the country's domestic surveillance programs.
Rep. Doug Lamborn wants to avoid government shutdown
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=RfSwSFXZ1DEwI1h-661qcg
Colorado Springs Congressman Doug Lamborn is backing a deal that could
avert a government shutdown while setting up another showdown over
Obamacare. The Republican is still all about undermining the
Affordable Care Act. But he is joining a GOP movement to push the
health care fight to a later vote over the nation's debt ceiling
rather than tying up the federal budget.

Colorado higher education leaders pen letter to congressional
delegation for immigration reform
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=vLvkLUgz8tc9OuPmYpUE7g
The presidents of five colleges in the state and Colorado State
University's system chancellor have signed a letter asking their
representatives in Congress to get a move on with immigration reform.
Fairness and the economy can't wait any longer, they said.
"Immigration reform would help Colorado's economy to
thrive," Colorado College president Jill Tiefenthaler said in a
statement released by the Partnership for a New American Economy, a
bipartisan coalition of more than 500 mayors and heads of top U.S.
businesses who have joined with education leaders nationwide "to
support sensible immigration reform that will strengthen
America's economy," according to the partnership.
Hickenlooper considering special legislative session in wake of
Colorado floods
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=ZSO-Ru2KxYQOSmLOO-MvCA
Gov. John Hickenlooper said Thursday he's assessing whether there is a
need for a special legislative session in the aftermath of Colorado's
massive, deadly floods that have wreaked havoc in 17 counties. "Each
time an issue arises, we're saying, 'All right, do we need a special
session or can we deal with that?' " Hickenlooper said at a news
conference where he briefed reporters on the flood-recovery efforts.
"And so far, most of the issues we've been able to deal with directly.
That doesn't mean we've covered every avenue." Hickenlooper said it's
a "matter of days" before a decision on a special session needs to be
made.

Recall proponents still bristling
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=IcqWodH-xKcXS0-ZW4QlmQ
The revolutionary spirit held by proponents of two successful Colorado
recalls appears to be gaining in strength without political borders.
The message is simple: "no one is safe." Proponents of the
two recalls earlier this month that ousted Senate President John Morse
of Colorado Springs and Sen. Angela Giron of Pueblo - both
Democrats - have now set their sights on "establishment
Republicans," with the current target being state GOP Chairman
Ryan Call.

Morgan County Commissioners vow to send rural representation
resolution to state
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=xI85JSxXI5s0Ab8tMenezA
The Morgan County commissioners will send a resolution to the state in
support of finding a means for more rural representation in the state
legislature. While a preferred specific means of accomplishing this
had yet to be determined, the commissioners said they understood local
folks' reasons for wanting it by the end of last night's third rural
representation public meeting.
Baisley elected new vice chair of state GOP
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=vU8ls6GY1sXh9i5iNWlBMQ
The Colorado Republican Party central committee on Saturday in Denver
elected a new vice chairman who hopes to offer a grassroots balance to
Chairman Ryan Call's agenda. Douglas County Republican Mark
Baisley, who challenged Call earlier this year for the chairmanship,
will replace Don Ytterberg of Jefferson County, who is exiting in
order to explore a run for congress in the 7th Congressional District.
Colorado's corrections chief promises reforms to parole
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=v34AMO7GzGg19qvNT1FnbQ
Colorado's new executive director of corrections said he will unveil
on Friday reforms and policy changes to the parole system when he
appears before state legislators. "The corrections you see today will
be much different starting tomorrow," Rick Raemisch told reporters who
pressed him for details after the first day of legislative hearings on
parole's shortcomings. He said he wanted to first reveal the changes
to legislators during his scheduled testimony on Friday.

Vestas Colorado plants bolstered by new wind-turbine contract
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=rKyyD3RBaQJWcYYyl5Brfw
Vestas Wind Systems, which has plants in Windsor, Brighton and Pueblo,
announced Thursday its largest wind-turbine order in three years: 400
megawatts for two Texas wind farms. The wind farms are being built in
south Texas by Duke Energy, the country's largest utility operator.
The order is the largest globally since 2010 for Aarhus, Denmark-based
Vestas.

Shell will be in western Colo. 'for a while'
http://progressnowcolorado.pnstate.org/site/R?i=TmXUHgE7dhCZ2p8RsuNTUg
The Royal Dutch Shell energy company, which announced this week it is
shutting down its demonstration oil shale project in the Piceance
Basin, is not exactly disappearing overnight, as happened 31 years ago
when Exxon (as it was known then) pulled the plug on its oil shale
operations in this region and plunged most of the state into an
economic recession. "We'll be there for a while,"
said Shell spokeswoman Carolyn Tucker on Thursday, noting that the
company has much to do before it can call it a day and move on to
other pursuits.

created jobs at a faster pace in the first eight months of 2013 than
the same period in 2012, according to Broomfield economist Gary

percent increase compared with the first eight months of 2012, Horvath
said.
