*Main Topics:* Georgia-Russia war, Jerome Corsi book
Summary of Shift:
The Russian Georgian conflict remains the primary subject of the
political news cycle. In the past three days, there has been a steady
increase in the number of voices challenging the traditional media's
narrative that McCain has leverage when speaking about Georgia. For example,
on CNN Errol Louis remarked on the conflict of interest Scheunemann poses
for McCain. In the same segment, Politico's Beth Frerking contradicted
herself by first emphatically praising McCain's response to the crisis, then
minutes later stating, "the last thing we need right now is saber rattling."
The aggressive effort by progressive organizations to rebut Jerome Corsi has
succeeded to the extent that media voices are almost all framing the book as
negative, fairly inaccurate, 'swift boating.' On several networks, liberal
pundits hammered Cori's erroneous claims and history of bigoted comments.
Finally in political coverage, some time was devoted to unions attacking
WalMart for coercing employees to vote Republican and lengthy segments were
devoted to the news that Hillary Clinton will receive a roll call vote at
the Democratic Convention.
In other news, there were segments about allegations that a
Chinese athlete lied about her age in the Olympics and mechanical problems
with Obama's plane. The broadcast networks continue to more or less
favorably cover new drilling options (shale, North Dakota, offshore) with
tepid mentions of environmental concerns or the long-term impact on climate
change.

*Maddow Attacks Jerome Corsi, Publisher, Evaluates The Various Charges
Against The Book* (MSNBC 08/14/08 8:40pm)
RACHEL MADDOW: This Sunday when the New York Times publishes its list of
best selling books, the Obama Nation by Jerome Corsi will debut at number
one in nonfiction. The subtitle leftist politics and the cult of personality
is published by Threshold Positions, a subdivision of Simon and Shuster –
the chief editor of the imprint is former Dick Cheney adviser Mary Matalin.
Best seller or not, the assertions in Corsi's book, and the cast of
characters surrounding its publication, stretched the credulity of its
classification of nonfiction. If the name of Jerome Corsi is familiar to
you, its probably because of his role in concocting wild lies about John
Kerry's war record in 2004 […] *You may also remember Corsi's apology for
the word raghead to describe Muslims on the website FreeRepublic. He also
apologized for using the phrase boy bumpers, though I still have no idea
what that was all about. You may remember Corsi for his sober allegations
that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian, that John Kerry is both a Jew and a
Communist, and his allegations that Muslims actually worship Satan. You may
remember Corsi for his recent book attacking the liberal myth that oil is a
finite resource. Since he, Jerome Corsi, has learned how to make new oil.
You may remember Corsi for his scholarly rebuke of George Bush's secret plan
to merge the United States into Mexico*. […]
ERIC BURNS: […] One of the things that gives a book cache, a nonfiction
book, is footnotes. You look at the back of the book, all these footnotes,
dozens of pages, and you say this guy did a lot of research. Well, before
the show tonight, and I didn't have time to do more […] but of the first 11
footnotes in the book, nine of the-in nine of them, Corsi quotes Corsi. In
other words, he quotes previous writings of his own. […] It's a dubious
practice to say the least. […]
BURNS: Bulk sales means instead of an individual going into buy the book, an
organization buys dozens of books, hundreds of books, maybe even thousands
of books. What this means is the whole picture of the book's popularity is
skewed. *What has happened here, this isn't my opinion, and I'll tell you
why it's not my opinion in just a minute, but what has happened is that
several conservative groups have bought large numbers of they're giving them
out to fellow conservatives or for all I know they're putting them on the
shelves somewhere. The New York Times, recognizing this, will put the book
at number one on the best seller list this week with a dart next to it. The
dart means bulk sales, you can't trust the figures. *
*Del Walters: Corsi's Book is Literary Equivalent to Asking: Do You Still
Beat Your Wife?** *(MSNBC 08/14/08 07:56pm)
DEL WALTERS: I think the problem with that particular *book it is the
political, the literary equivalence to do you still beat your wife*. I
talked to Kathleen Kennedy Townsend one time, and she said that now a days
in politics you not only have to be prepared to respond to your record and
your reputation but also all the things they may say about you that have
absolutely no basis in fact. The problem with these books are they print
them. Someone is going to see it on a newsstand and they are going to say
you know there's a whole book about this. And then they are going to look at
the back of it and say well look at the publishing company that published
it. *And they are going to say there must be some fire there because there
is an awful lot of smoke*. It may be completely true, and that is what the
Obama campaign is trying to do. But how do you answer all of those charges,
how do you say that I don't beat my wife anymore, I never beat my wife? Well
people are going to say, if you do then you protest too much, and if you
don't then they are going to say well there must be a grain of truth there.
I think that this thing is very, very troubling.
DAVID SCHUSTER: […] Corsi is, as described by the *Obama spokesperson, a
discredited liar who is peddling another piece of garbage in order to
continue the Bush, Cheney politics. […]*
MICHELLE BERNARD: […] He's absolutely got to respond to them, because people
know John McCain, people are still trying to figure out who Barack Obama is
and that's why this book was published when it was. […]
*Highlight #2*
*Cavuto Challenges Holtz-Eakin On McCain's Budget Plan, Reconciling Spending
And Tax Cuts* (FNC 08/14/08 4:20pm)
NEIL CAVUTO: The gist of this is we have to find a way to pay for our
government. And things have gotten pretty crazy over the years so who better
to sort of balance that within the folks who've benefitted - the rich. What
do you make of it?
DOUG HOLTZ-EAKIN: Let's be clear what's going on here. Senator Obama has a
long and very clear record of voting 94 times in his career as a Senator for
higher taxes. That includes a vote when he was claiming he wanted to cut
taxes for people under 250,000 going back to the Senate and voting for
higher taxes for people with 200,00...
CAVUTO: Well, be careful. Your guy is hardly the virgin mary on this issue.
He was against the President's tax cuts for good reason at the time, so he
too has changed his position on it.
HOLTZ-EAKIN: Let us also remember that Senator Obama has proposed a million
dollars in earmarks for every year he's been a working Senator. So, what
goes on when he hits the campaign drill? You know his record as well as
anyone. He says he will take public financing, then he explains to his
supporters no. He says he'll do town halls with John McCain, but he doesn't
appear in any.
CAVUTO: *No, no, no. Let's stick to the tax issue [cross talk] this is
important. We have a candidate who claims the opponent, the Democratic
opponent is a tax hiker, yet we have a candidate in your guy, John McCain,
who cannot account for his spending with his aggressive tax cuts he's
planning. Which goes? Which is real?*
HOLTZ-EAKIN: John McCain ran on a tax cut in 2000. He has a proven record he
has never voted for any kind of tax increase in his life - he would not
support Barack Obama's policies.
CAVUTO: But he's also saying he's not ruling out the possibility of having
to raise taxes. He's not a do or die on that issue right?
HOLTZ-EAKIN: *He has said, and this came up in the context of Social
Security, that he understands negotiations, he understands how it gets done
in the Congress, you have to let everyone bring their proposals to the
table.*
CAVUTO: *That sounds to be that he's open to tax hike. Your criticizing the
Obama folks for stating it, you're hinting at it.*
HOLTZ-EAKIN: No. That is saying they could send their bad ideas to the
table. That's their right. He will bring his ideas to the table: controlling
spending, lower taxes, jobs for American workers,
*Highlight #3*
*Louis Invokes Scheunemann In Discussing McCain And Obama Response To
Georgia-Russia War* (CNN 08/14/08 7:43pm)
BETH FRERKING, POLITICO: This is a sweet spot for John McCain. He's looked
extremely authoritative. He's looked very relaxed and confident whenever
he's spoken about this. I think that's obviously to his advantage. […]
ERROL LOUIS: *I think there are some problems with John McCain on all this
stuff. I certainly don't buy into the hype that he's saying all the right
things. If you consider that his top foreign policy adviser until 90 days
ago was a paid client of the Georgian government. If you consider that John
McCain – and that client is now calling in his favor- Saakashvili is now
calling in his favor, what we need now is action, not just words. I mean
he's expecting him now as a candidate or even as President to try to pull
the cat out of the fire. You know the mixture of private and public aims is
not particularly attractive * […]
FRERKING: Probably the smartest thing for all of them to do is wait and
watch, talk about their concerns, talk about the concerns of the American
people, watching, I think the last thing we need right now is saber rattling
given that we have troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. I think the smartest
thing to do is be counted and be seen.
* Highlight #4*
*Phil Gramm Spotted at McCain Event* (MSNBC 08/14/08 07:59pm)
DAVID SHUSTER: Someone that was seen with John McCain today, you may
remember Phil Gramm and some comments that he made several seeks ago that
John McCain quickly distanced himself from. […]
[Clip of Gramm's Comments]
SHUSTER: *Now John McCain very quickly distanced himself from Phil Gramm but
there was Phil Gramm today at a John McCain event.* The picture of Phil
Gramm in the audience with John McCain. I mean at a certain point don't the
democrats, they didn't run an ad on Phil Gramm, aren't they essentially
giving John McCain a free pass on this. And that would suggest that John
McCain isn't as tough as he needs to be.
[…]
MICHELLE BERNARD: He's got to be careful to be the agent of change, but
he's also got to go negative if he wants to win.
*Highlight #5*
*Gordon Smith, One in a Long Line of Senators Abandoning McCain and the
Convention* (MSNBC 8/14/08 08:14pm)
RACHEL MADDOW: *Senator John McCain is finding himself bereft of
buddies*this summer.
*Republican Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon is the latest runaway; he has
quit as state co-chair for McCain's campaign. Smith insists he is not
trying to distance himself from the presumptive nominee*. He says he's
merely focusing his efforts on his own reelection campaign. But considering
the position of co-chair is mainly honorary requiring little more from
Senator Smith than the use of his name, and considering Senator Smith has
been running re-election ads linking himself both to Senator John Kerry and
Senator Barack Obama, even though in 04' he called Kerry French and
socialist, the claim that Smith isn't trying to separate himself from McCain
and from the R after his own title, rings a little hollow. Senator Smith
just the latest in a string of GOP Senators to back away from McCain and the
GOP. […]
BOB HERBERT: *Who's going to be there? He's going to be a lonely guy.*
MADDOW*: Isn't this weird? 10 out of 49 Republican Senators. Almost a fifth
are not going. [to the GOP Convention]*
HERBERT: The short answer is this is weird. The Republican's are
demoralized, the Republican's in congress are demoralized, and they have
reason to be demoralized. Things are really turning against them. They
don't have the issues; they are running away from Bush, who was incredibly
unpopular. *McCain has turned out not to be a great candidate. […] That
conservative to the right philosophy has pretty much played out, it's
bankrupt now. […]*
MADDOW: […] Heading into the general election campaign how would McCain
strategize against the Democrats casting him too close to Bush. […] With
all of these defections, not only form the convention but from McCain
personally, is are Republicans making a distinction between McCain and Bush.
*Do these defections represent an assessment by Republican Senators that
running away from McCain is the same thing as running away from Bush and has
the same political imperative. *
HERBERT: Yea I think that's what's going on. *The ones that are running
away are definitely assuming that the voters are going to see McCain linked
up there with Bush. […]*
