Currently the boss' laptop isn't backed up, so if it were lost/stolen or suffered a catastrophic drive failure, we'd
lose all the data on it. This makes me very nervous.
I've been thinking of solutions for this - since he travels constantly and having a backup drive that he carries
with the laptop defeats the point of the backup (it'd be too likely to suffer the same loss or damage as the
machine), and any cloud based solution would introduce security risks by putting his data on servers we don't
control.
But. The current version of OS X allows us to backup to multiple devices. I'm suggesting that we purchase a
3TB AirPort Time Capsule for each house. Ship them here and I'll configure them so that they can be simply
unpacked by each of the house managers and plugged into their networks where ever makes the most sense.
Details:
I. I'll be turning off the network options on each of them so that they function as a "Network Attached
Storage" device only — basically an external drive that exists on the network.
2. I'll configure JEE's laptop to backup to each whenever it's available (eg. when on the Zorro network, it'll
see that device and backup to it).
3. The ability to connect to the drive will require a password that we won't share with the house managers.
Additionally, the backup itself will be protected by another password that they won't have access to.
These passwords will be stored on the boss' laptop, so he'll never need to enter them.
4. If we need to restore from backup, we can have the device shipped in from where he last was.

The Apple 3TB Time Capsule is $360 each on Amazon. We'd want one for each of the US houses, and
*maybe* Paris.

I'll need —20 minutes with his machine to configure the first backup to the NYC Time Capsule. It will then run
for a long time to create the first backup (up to 24 hours, with the amount of data he has on his system). Once it
finishes, I'll need another 30 minutes with his machine to configure the backups to the non-NY Time Capsules.
Once the initial setup pain is done tho, it should just run itself invisibly (I'll be able to check the status of the
various backups when I run maintenances on his machine).
