VETERANS LAUNCH NEARLY $1 MILLION IN ADS IN PENNSYLVANIA,
CRITICAL OF TOOMEY, FITZPATRICK ON FAILURE TO SUPPORT TROOPS AND VETS
Ads call for defeat of Toomey, Fitzpatrick for voting against troops and
veterans
PHILADELPHIA, PENN. - VoteVets.org, a national veterans organization, is
today launching nearly $1 million in hard-hitting broadcast and cable ads in
Pennsylvania, critical of the veterans' record of Senate candidate Pat
Toomey and Eighth House District candidate Mike Fitzpatrick. Each of the
ads features veterans from the state.
The Toomey ad can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j48SB88Prtw

A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DCmIsJ2uxKME>
The scripts of both ads are below.
TOOMEY AD - "EXPECT"
The ad on Toomey hits at his vote against a $1500 combat bonus for troops
serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It features Anthony Rakoczy, a Marine
veteran from Levittown, John Hanczaryk, an Army veteran from Yardley, and
Bruce Gerstemeier, an Army veteran from Scranton. All three served in
Afghanistan.
In the ad, the veterans rotate lines, saying, "As a soldier in Afghanistan,
I was trained to expect the worst. At home, I thought it would be
different. But, Congressman Toomey voted against a $1500 combat bonus.
And, Congressman Toomey supports letting Wall Street execs keep every penny
of their bonuses. Toomey said that money for troops was 'wasteful
spending.' Bonuses for Wall Street are fine? But bonuses for troops are
wasteful? I expected the worst in Afghanistan. I expected better from
Congressman Toomey."
Indeed, Toomey did vote against an amendment offered by Rep. Bart Stupak in
2003 that would have given combat troops a $1500 bonus for their service in
war. This June, when asked, Toomey said at a press conference of that vote,
"Now there are times when some of these measures are [used] as an excuse to
undermine the fiscal stability of our country. That's very bad policy. And,
we shouldn't hold military and veteran needs hostage to wasteful spending."
VoteVets.org says it is spending $400,000 on airing the ad on broadcast and
cable. It comes on the heels of a $500,000 canvassing effort in the state
supporting Joe Sestak, announced earlier in the month.
FITZPATRICK AD - "SACRIFICE"
The ad on Fitzpatrick is critical of his vote to allow families of the
fallen to claim their rightful survivor benefits from the government. The
ad features Jared Baker, an Army Iraq veteran from Doylestown.
In the ad, Baker says, "I proudly served as a soldier in Iraq. Thousands of
American troops lost their lives and we counted on our leaders back home for
support. But, we didn't get that kind of support from Congressman Mike
Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick failed those who sacrificed their lives for our
freedom. He actually voted against giving rightful survivor benefits to
families of fallen service-members. Mike Fitzpatrick voted against our
troops, and their families. Now, it's time to vote against him."
In 2006, when in Congress, Fitzpatrick voted against a motion to stop the
Department of Defense from reducing military death benefits for surviving
spouses by the amount received in Veterans Affairs dependency and indemnity
compensation. That vote affirmed a policy that cuts Survivor Benefit Plan
annuity payments by the amount of VA compensation.
VoteVets.org says it is spending $500,000 to air the ad on broadcast and
cable in the Philadelphia market.

VETERANS BACK HARRY REID IN MOVING NEW TELEVISION AD
LAS VEGAS, NV - VoteVets.org, a national veterans organization, is launching
a moving new television ad today, narrated by a veteran from the state,
urging Nevadans to re-elect Senator Harry Reid. The group said it was
spending $400,000 to air the ad on statewide broadcast and cable.
The ad can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa3fRarzoIQ

Titled "Highway," the ad shows a young man hiking along the road, just as
Harry Reid did once a week as he went back and forth to school. Narrated by
Anthony Funches an Air Force veteran from Las Vegas, the ad chronicles how
Harry Reid has always beat the odds, including his leadership to provide
care and benefits to our nation's veterans. The full script of the ad is
below, with backup.
"Harry Reid has always been there for us," said Jon Soltz, Iraq War veteran
and Chairman of VoteVets.org. "This ad truly encapsulates how we feel about
him and the dogged leadership he's provided, especially when it comes to
veterans. In very many ways, veterans coming home face the same kind of
challenges that Harry Reid has always conquered - getting an education,
working our way up the ladder. So not only are we thankful for his
leadership, and respect it, but we identify with his character. That's why
we've chosen to run an ad like this."

Ad Script
Script Back-Up
High school was forty-six miles away, they said going would be impossible.
So, he walked & hitched his way. Forty-six every Monday, forty-six back come
Friday.
"Finding someplace to go to high school took money some people just didn't
have. Some young men kicked around or went into the mines or other such
jobs. Others went to school in Needles California, some to Boulder City or
Las Vegas. Following the good example of my brothers Don and Dale, who had
both gone to Basic High School, I stuck my thumb at age thirteen and
hitchhiked the 45 miles north to Henderson." [Harry Reid, The Good Fight,
p.100]
Asked his girlfriend's father for her hand, he growled; and said impossible.
Five children and sixteen grandchildren later, he and his girlfriend are
still holding hands.
"'We're married,' Landra told [her parents]. 'I wanted to give you the
address of where we're going.' 'This is not what we wanted. I did everything
I could to stop it, and that was my right,' Earl Gould told his daughter.
'But now it's done. You are our only daughter. We're going to try and make
this thing work.'" [Harry Reid, The Good Fight, p.125]
"In 1961, their first child and only daughter - Lana - was born. Son Rory
was born in 1962, and three more brothers followed - Leif, Josh, and
Key.Today, Senator Reid and Landra are the proud grandparents of 16
grandchildren." [Official Biography, Reid.Senate.gov, accessed 10/11/10

Everyone knows a nobody could never get elected to office. Impossible? He
proved 'em wrong again.
"As a small boy he would accompany his father, Harry Reid Sr., for long days
deep underground in the mines. His father was a hardrock miner with an
eighth grade education and his mother never completed high school; yet the
youngest of Harry and Inez Reid's four sons would go on to achieve the
American dream." [Official Biography, Reid.Senate.gov, accessed 10/11/10

Never single-handedly stop Yucca Mountain.
"Reid is surely the most influential senator Nevada has sent to Washington
since it became a state 146 years ago. He has delivered millions of dollars
in aid and almost single-handedly blocked the federal government from
turning Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Vegas, into a national

CityCenter - 22,000 Jobs
"Last year, MGM Resorts International was close to shuttering CityCenter,
the largest private construction project in the nation's history. Financing
had dried up in the wake of the financial industry's collapse. At MGM's
request, Reid and his Republican counterpart Sen. John Ensign called the
CEOs of the company's lenders urging them not to ignore the project.
Without that intervention, Reid argues, 22,000 workers would be without jobs
and the Strip would be stuck with a cluster of partially built hotels." [Las

Travel Promotion Act - 40,000 Jobs
"President Obama Thursday enacted legislation to promote international
travel to the United States by establishing a national tourism board that
would coordinate advertising and other efforts to encourage foreigners to
visit the United States.Advocates of the law say it would help attract 1.6
million new international visitors, $4 billion in new spending and more than
$300 million in tax revenue each year. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
(Nev.), who faces a tough re-election battle this year, was a strong backer
of the bill." [Washington Post, 3/4/10

"'It's been a tough year, particularly for domestic U-S travelers to come to
Las Vegas,' says Gary Selesner, the President of Caesars Palace. 'The one
segment growing has been international.'
But international tourists are in high demand. Since 9-11, 68 million fewer
visitors have come to this country.
That's partly why the travel promotion act was created, so the U-S can
market itself.
'We collectively can no longer leave it to the states or corporations,' says
MGM Mirage Marketing Director Bill Hornbuckle. 'Everyone needs to
participate.'
'This is a great assist for us, because we're going to have millions of
dollars of advertising helping convince tourists to come to this country and
by extension, Las Vegas,' adds Selesner.
Local politicians like Senator Harry Reid and Senator John Ensign were
instrumental in pushing this bill through Congress.
They say attracting 1.6 million more visitors a year should result in 40,000
new jobs nationwide." [Las Vegas Review-Journal, 3/9/10

. or be the one to demand that our veterans be treated with dignity and
honor. For those would be impossible.
"Today, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee announced
its endorsement of Nevada Senator Harry Reid for his tireless commitment on
behalf of Nevada's veterans such as securing the $540 million in funding
needed to complete a new VA Hospital in Southern Nevada, passing the 21st

Re-election? Some say darned close to impossible, throw 'em all out. But in
this day, this time of worldwide distress, we think Nevada needs him and
that determination more than ever.
So, let's send him back, where he'll keep quietly, patiently, doggedly doing
what he's always done for us.
Yep, the impossible.
