Seeing something from the wings of the world's stage. And thus has been created, the theme of the 555 Conference. finding the future first. TM A window of ideas from 25 of the most formidable creative geniuses of our time. Each is likely of what they see in a narrow band of their expertise, in the next 5 years. There will be no doom and gloom speeches about global warming, the end of civilization or disasters, rather the constructive ideas that concern energy, power, transportation, medicine, communications, businesses, inventions, geological events, building materials, and other game changing ideas in a broad range of subjects by the most credible individuals in the world. Some chosen locally from the cities that participate and others from the best contacts that Wurman and his team already have. The curation of which has already begun, and we have a prime list of people from which we will chose, getting additional input from each of the cities. Each will be one of 5 cities of innovation that would like to be identified with finding the future firstTM; supporting forward thinking and constructive ideas. There are several unique ideas surrounding this meaning. 1. It will be global. It will take place in 5 cities sequentially, going around the world. 2. Each of the chosen presenters will be given the help of the best creative offices in communications, such as the development of apps, video, information architecture; diagrams and charts, technical consolation for the cloud and telepresence and the best cartography where applicable, to explain their idea. 02G Oil EFTA00286914 555 CONFERENCE 2014 These will not be boring academic papers, but elaborately contracted and hour long presentations that could easily be translated into an TV show, blog, book or magazine article. All of which we have deeply explored. The individuals that are going to help this have been approached and the team has been assembled: @radical.media titip://warve.radicalmedia corn A company that has an Academy Award, Emmys, a Golden Globe, Grammys, Webbys and The Smithsonian Copper-Hewitt National Design Award for Communication Design. To aid in producing the translation of the presentations to TV, web or media publication. NIGEL HOMES tilinnigelholrneS corn The graphic design consultant of the conference. A gentlemen who first introduced diagrams to magazines and was Art Director of Time Magazine for a number of years. To help in demonstrating a graphic understanding of each prediction. GREG HARPER, HARPERVISION htlpliwnharpervislon tv;stte, President and Founder of Harpervision, which currently focuses on wireless personal information devices, mobile phones, the next generation of ultra high definition telepresence and collaborative systems, 3D TV, distance learning, digital media, and rich media. For help in technology. JACK DANGERMOND hltp://wvvve.esn.corn President and Founder of esri. A company that is key in the development of GIS mapping systems around the world. For help in cartographic display. RICHARD SAUL WURMAN http://vnvw.wurman.comirSw/ To direct and consult with each presenter in order to make the complex clear. Part of the presentations are also how the world prepares for each invention, and the unintended consequence that some predictions hold. More about that later The first conference would be in Sydney, Australia. We will then have one city in the East, one in the Middle East, one European city and perhaps one in North America. 0304 Oil EFTA00286915 555 CONFERENCE 2014 What does each city gets out of this? Historically many cities have taken pages of international newspapers to promote their city and explain the advantages of investing in their location. That lasts for the day of the newspaper, and I believe, is not deeply read. But I do know it is costly. What a city gets out of this is 5-10 weeks of press with predictions being released on a daily basis, through a wide spectrum of media, culminating in a book and perhaps a TV series. This leads to all 25 speakers getting together for an improvised conversation of cross- fire questioning of one another that addresses how the world prepares from different perspectives. That event will have a whole publicity track of it's own. It will be called WWW2. (See http://www.thewwwconference.com ). As some of the global sponsors will probably be airline and hospitality industry based, the best of what comes out of all of this could be streamed on flights, in airports and all throughout hotels. Each city will get to stream their day conference throughout their city and country, and they will be asked in the curation process of what subjects they would most like to be identified with. As well as suggest a list 10 people, from which we would jointly chose 2 to be a part of the 5 that will present in the day long conference. Each city will put on the conference and get whatever revenues might or might not come out of that conference. In other words, if it will be a free or paid event. The would also see income from any local sponsorship. What the 555 Conference Group wants, is the media that comes out of it, and to be involved in the direction and the quality of the content of the event and how it is captured and filmed. Each city will pay the same fee. Each global sponsor will pay the same fee. But, how we customize if for each city and global sponsor is up to personal discussions with Wurman and his team. That invitation is real and will help make this truly global in feeling, so that each meeting is not a cookie cutter event but that the city is clearly identified and the flavor of that city is quite evident through the filming and the publicity that emanates from the event itself. Wurman and his team would be happy to discuss subjects that would particularly interest each city and location, and we will do the same for global sponsors. In no way will this present ideas that are controversial, but constructive. I want to make it perfectly clear that this a collection of constructive, thoughtful, defendable clearly explained projections for the next 5 years. 04 Ci 011 EFTA00286916 555 CONFERENCE 2014 02 BIOGRAPHY RICHARD SAUL WURMAN Described by Fortune magazine as an "intellectual hedonist" with a "hummingbird mind," Richard Saul Wurman has always sought ways to make the complex clear. He has written, designed and published 83 books on topic ranging from football to healthcare, city guides, as well as two books on Louis I Kahn, his mentor, but he likes to say that they all spring from the same place - his ignorance. Wurman's first book, published when he was 26, features models of 50 world cities on a uniform scale. His latest book is called 33: Understanding Change & the Change in Understanding. Wurman created the ACCESS city guides, using graphics and logical editorial organization to make places such as New York, Tokyo and Rome understandable to visitors. Other volumes he created focus on topics such as football and the 1984 Olympics. His road atlas employed similar techniques to elucidate U.S. geography and transportation networks. Several of his books are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Wurman chaired the IDCA Conference in 1972, the First Federal Design assembly in 1973, and the annual AIA Conference in 1976. He created and chaired the TED conference from 1984 thru 2002, bringing together many of America's clearest thinkers in the fields of technology, entertainment and design. He also created and chaired the TEDMED conference in 1995 and the eg conference in 2006. Now in his late 70's, Wurman continues to quell his restless intellect with a slough of new projects. Recently, he completed the first WWW Conference Intellectual Jazz, which consists of improvised conversations between pairs of some of the world's greatest minds. His next endeavor will be the 555 conference, consisting of 5 experts, 5 predictions of future patterns, for the next 5 years, held in 5 cities circumnavigating the world over 5 consecutive weeks. FINDING THE FUTURE FIRST. He continues to work with Esri® and OradicaLmedia on his comparative cartographic initiative for mapping urban settings, 19.20.21. which will culminate in the creation of a network of live Urban Observatories'" around the world. Wurman received both his M. Arch. & B. Arch. Degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, from where he graduated in 1959 with the highest honors, and was awarded the Arthur Spayed Brooks Gold Medal. He has been awarded several honorary doctorates, two Graham Fellowships, a Guggenheim and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as recently becoming a Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Design in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards. He has also been awarded the Annual Gold Medal from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland and the James Joyce Award given by the Literary and Historical Society of University College, Dublin and most recently gave the commencement speech at Harvard Graduate School of Design. He has also been honored with the Gold Medal from AIGA, the Art Directors Hall of Fame, the Chrysler Award for Innovation and Design, is a Fellow of the AIA and recieved the Boston Science Museum's 50th Annual Award. Wurman lives in Newport, RI with his wife, novelist Gloria Nagy. 05 OP 011 EFTA00286917 555 CONFERENCE 2014 03 PUBLICATIONS To show the breathe of Richard Saul Wurman's interests which helps in his curation, although formally trained as an architect. 1960's Cities: A Comparison of Form and Scale The Notebook and Drawings of Louis I. It's called the 555 Conference, and it's slated to he held in 2014. The conference would be held in five different cities worldwide. Each city would host a one-day gathering of five "exceptional global experts." The gatherings would be held on five consecutive Mondays. Warman, who plans to attend all five days, would choose three of the experts and call on the host city to provide him with a list of 10 nominees, from which he would pick two. Each of the 25 total experts would be called on to make "narrowly constructed, focused & superbly communicated, constructed predictions for the next 10 years." The Monday conference would be followed on Tuesday by a smaller, closed gathering with the attendees and special guests. The goal, said Wurman, is to make a truly global conference. The predictions would address 11 different topic areas, including energy, space and travel, food, water, urban development, entertainment and sports, and computers, visual display and transmission. Wurman said he released the details of the conference on his Web site about a week ago, but made no formal announcement about the conference. The documentation publicly available, so far, is little more than a Web page and a two-page handout. "I just try to struggle through scamming everybody to do something once a year — one big project," said Wurman during a phone call Tuesday. 'I'm trying to reinvent what gatherings are." Wurman, an architect and graphic designer, launched the Urban Observatory installation this month during the ESI International User Conference. He hosted the WWW conference in September 2012 — a series of improvised conversations over three days. "It was the most amazing conference I ever ran ... and ever went to," he said of the gathering. That's no minor assessment considering the massive popularity of TED, which Wurman first convened in 1984 and worked on until 2002. A total of 180 people were in attendance at WWW, said Wurman, including world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, musician and producer Quincy Jones, recording artist Will.i.am and Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry among other notable attendees. The event was hosted by ESRI President Jack Dangermond at the company's conference center in Redlands, Calif. "I was terrified," said Wurman of the lead-up to the SWAN Conference, "I wasn't sure it was going to work at all. And then it worked better than I thought. So that was a surprise. But it was scary." Videos of the OMAN conference were made available on Fora.TV this week, but an iOS app featuring additional multimedia elements around the conversations held there will also be made available Aug. 15. These would include Pulitzer Prize-winning poet CK Williams's hand-edited drafts as well as other more intimate materials, according to a release. The app will include 18 hours of what Wurman says is "astonishing" video of the conversations. Now, for the 555 Conference, Wurman said he was attracted to the concept of 'finding the future first" — what he sees as the tagline for the conference. Each of the 25 speakers would give roughly an hour-14241g, highly structured talk. They would also be given access to a leading information architect, video designer and app maker. On top of OD Or on EFTA00286921 555 CONFERENCE 2014 that, they would also get Wurman's help in orchestrating their talk. Each speech, said Wurman, would ultimately be "a piece of theater." Audience invitations would be extended by the host city, not by Wurman or his team. "If the city wanted to have a thousand people free, fine. If they want to have a thousand people and charge them ten thousand dollars each, fine. They can keep all of that. All I wanted was the media that came out of the conference," he said. "I don't care about the audience? But Wurman said he would want some funds from the host city to put on the event, since the city would benefit from the public relations, being cast as a city that's 'looking at innovation' and associated with the "finding the future first" tagline. Wurman has five rules of innovation, which go by the acronym "A NOSE": addition, need, opposite, subtraction, epiphany. The WWW conference was about subtraction — where Wurman stripped away the traditional conference structure. When asked which rule the 555 Conference abided by, Wurman said he didn't have a good answer, but saw it as incorporating both epiphany and opposite, since it was a new idea for an event that, unlike a traditional conference, could be held regardless of the number of tickets sold. At the end of the five weeks, all 25 speakers would be brought together in New York City for a WWW2 conference where they would be placed in pairs or groups of three and called on, as with the first %WAN conference, to engage in an improvised conversation — or "intellectual jazz." The conversation would be a critique of the predictions, and provide an opportunity to discuss what the world should do to prepare. "I think everybody every day is going to wait for the new prediction. Because these are going to be by eminent people," said Wurman. He hasn't reached out to anyone yet regarding distribution, he says, but hopes to turn the conversations into a television show, magazine articles, a book or perhaps even distribute them via a streaming video platform such as Netflix. "This is all based in the art of the possible," he said during the call. In other words, the specifics are subject to change. He is collaborating with noted events producer Richard Attias, whose credentials include the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos and the Clinton Global Initiative. are Also listed as advisers are: ESRI's Dangermond; ocean explorer Dave Gallo; physician, author and USC professor David Agus; X Prize Foundation founder and chairman Peter Diamandis; Harpervision president and founder Greg Harper; @radical.media founder Jon Kamen; and video translations and captions company Dotsub founder and chairman Michael Smolens. Wurman said he would probably start reaching out to cities this fall.
