When we spoke last week you indicated you knew of an individual who may be
interested in learning about my research, and who would want to see

some of the primary literature. To this end I attach a few of our
papers. Amador 2013 is the recent major result I mentioned in our
conversation. In arriving at that result we used sleeping birds, but
only for a technical advantage. Attached are four other papers that
describe some of our sleep and learning results in birds. The Dave
2000 paper describes song replay ("birds dreaming of singing");
Shank 2009 demonstrates how physiology in the brain is shaped by
early vocal learning, and Rauske 2010 shows how the activity
patterns of neurons are sculpted on a nightly basis by sleep. Brawn
2013 presents a different model system (sleep and auditory
perception, not sleep and vocal production), showing how different
memories interfere with each other in a sleep-dependent fashion
during initial memory acquisition.
Finally, I also attach one more sleep perceptual learning study (Fenn 2003): in
humans, on speech, work done in collaboration with Howard.
I am grateful for the help you arc extending to me. It was a pleasure to meet with
you during your visit here to University of Chicago last week. I hope
we can meet again in the future.
Cheers,
Dan Margoliash
