yes„ however email me a letter that says how important it would be for me to actually spend time at origins.

was working on 1.5 hours sleep yesterday, so I may not have been coherent.. our conversation last night
felt like a dream this morning, though I know it happened. The greatest gift that I can get is to be given
the time and space to enjoy ideas and what means so much to me
is that I know that is the thought behind what you offered, and that alone means a tremendous amount to
me.... and I am not blowing smoke up your ass by saying that being able to share that joy with you has
been something that I have always enjoyed. Thanks Jeffrey. And I truly believe you are right, I would
provide you the same in a heartbeat if I could and if it was ever necessary. I will also ponder creative
ways to enact this once I get over the shock of it.
Enough schmultz perhaps.. On other matters.. regarding Origins Board.. I will check on things at this
end.. I assume you have the Florida Science Foundation still, and having you there as representing the
foundation cannot, as far as I can see, possibly be questioned (of course even if it was we could answer
back saying, 'what is your problem with the goals of the florida science foundation?"..) so I would
genuinely like you on the board because I think you will be a provocative and creative exponent of doing
interesting and novel transdisciplinary things and not the status quo.. If you ultimately decided that it was
better to be behind the scenes, we could ensure that you were a part of the meeting itself by indeed having
the board meeting in St. Thomas with you as our host.. (that is possible of course whether or not you are on
the board, and may be easier to justify if you are anyway) and it occurred to me last night that depending
upon the timing of it, Nancy and I could stay on and we could finally get you in the water to do some
diving.. :)
Regarding science, I will be contacting Martin.. I would really like to put something together for sometime
next winter after January.. Interestingly, Sid Altman, who won the Nobel Prize for showing RNA was a
catalyst, allowing the possibility of an RNA world before a DNA world, contacted me the other day and
EFTA00745554
said he heard about origins and wants to come out.. so we talked about Jan-Feb next year sometime, maybe
at the same time as Frank W. is visiting, and having a workshop on the origin of life.. I could in fact make
origin of life a theme of next winter-spring, and have several shorter workshops on interesting aspects of
this.. We are also talking about doing a larger related public origins event sometime in the spring, and we
could cap off a term of various workshops with something interesting on evolution, and also maybe get
some people like Jim Watson out here for color.. :)
I am going to prepare some proposals for Bamaby as well.. If we are going to do serious workshops where
we bring people out for an extended period to try and make real progress in a field, I figure it will cost
about 750K- 1M/term long workshop.. I am looking with people here at starting a charter school to really
teach science, and potentially building a building that co-joins it with an Origins meeting center.. The
University here is very entrepreneurial and I am intrigued by ways we might fund real science without
using the money just to support the university.. because of the ASU foundation we can funnel money in
private ways to do whatever we want, so being creative in this regard is both possible and advisable.. and
as I say, that even includes supporting work elsewhere if Martin is hampered by Harvard rules regard
external support. I actually think you would enjoy meeting at talking to Michael Crow here (the president
of asu) as he is really a remarkable man, and an interesting intellect.. so it might be nice for you to consider
coming to phoenix sometime just to hang out a bit, see the area, including real estate if you want, and meet
with Michael.. if we timed it and Martin and Frank W could come out for a few days we could talk ideas as
well..
some thoughts..
