recurring Sidewire Chat by talking with best-selling author and New York Times political writer MARK LEIBOVICH (http://markleibovich.com/bios/mark-leibovich) . ------------------------------------------------------------ ** TRUMP CLAIMS 'MANDATE' ------------------------------------------------------------ PATRICK HEALY & MAGGIE HABERMAN of the New York Times write Donald Trump has no plans to change his ways to appease Republican Party leaders. In an interview with the Times, Trump claimed a "mandate"and suggested he's doing just fine without the strategic help of a GOP establishment that he vanquished in the primaries. ------------------------------------------------------------ “I think I have a mandate from the people." —Donald Trump / NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/12/us/politics/donald-trump-campaign.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0) ------------------------------------------------------------ "You win the pennant and now you’re in the World Series — you gonna change? ... People like the way I’m doing.” —Trump / NYT (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/12/us/politics/donald-trump-campaign.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0) ------------------------------------------------------------ As Patrick and Maggie point out, candidates don't usually claim mandates until after they've won a general election, but he's making clear to Republicans that he believes he is the leader of the party. He even tells JULIE PACE, JILL COLVIN & JULIE BYKOWICZ (http://bigstory.ap.org/article/087bc8bc5028405c80fa20cea70be877/ap-interview-trump-narrows-vp-list-he-moves-general) of AP (or some combination of them) that he thinks political data analytics are over-rated and that he'll keep running his general election campaign the way he ran his primary — big rallies and free media. At the same time, Trump is softening his tone toward House Speaker Paul Ryan in advance of their meeting Thursday. In an interview with Fox's Bill O'Reilly, Trump called the Wisconsin congressman a "very good man" whom Trump would like to see remain in the role of co-chairman of the Republican convention. THE KEY NUANCE HERE lies in the realm of personality. Trump understands it's not in his interest to totally antagonize Ryan, who is very popular with congressional Republicans and more popular with GOP voters than his predecessor, John Boehner. So, while they still have major differences on policy and style,Trump is backing away from the type of personal war he wages against people he perceives to be his adversaries. FOR HIS PART, RYAN is still withholding his blessing for Trump. He told the Wall Street Journal's Jerry Seib yesterday that the process of rapprochement won't happen overnight for the GOP. ------------------------------------------------------------ "We shouldn’t just pretend our party is unified when we know it is not. … It was a very, very bitter divisive primary. It’s going to take more than a week just to repair and unify this party." —Paul Ryan / WSJ (http://www.wsj.com/articles/paul-ryan-plans-to-talk-with-donald-trump-on-how-to-unify-gop-1462909941) ------------------------------------------------------------ ** DEMOCRATS ARE HAVING TROUBLE FIGURING OUT TRUMP, TOO ------------------------------------------------------------ That was one of the big takeaways from yesterday's Sidewire Chatamong LIS SMITH, BEN LaBOLT & MAGGIE HABERMAN ------------------------------------------------------------ "Trump appears to be a much tougher target for Democrats. So far they haven't seem able to figure out precisely how they want to go at him." —Maggie Haberman / Sidewire 'Lis & LaBolt' (https://sidewire.com/politics/dashboard/articles/34b9056768065af9d260a7e9cb64e4fa/commentary/d236c462-7213-4d43-90e6-3ff33875c301) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Right extreme or loose cannon." —Ben LaBolt / Sidewire 'Lis & LaBolt' (https://sidewire.com/politics/dashboard/articles/34b9056768065af9d260a7e9cb64e4fa/commentary/bf96f571-6e8f-4f65-b23e-825bb4ecdc13) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Yes. Eating a deli sandwich is 'risky.' This is a little different." —Haberman / Sidewire 'Lis & LaBolt (https://sidewire.com/politics/dashboard/articles/34b9056768065af9d260a7e9cb64e4fa/commentary/390f5ffc-876b-48bd-9836-358c56ba7d50) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Yes, I don't believe that a deli sandwich has the capability to collapse the global economy. Tim Kaine, a former governor and Democratic National Committee chairman, would be a good vice presidential running mate for Hillary Clinton. ------------------------------------------------------------ "My real (total) guess is HRC picks safe, loyal ex-Gov Kaine of VA. With Trump it is anybody's guess. Maybe Christie, his van Pappen, maybe Hulk Hogan." —Mike Murphy / Sidewire '4 x 2' (https://sidewire.com/politics/dashboard/articles/87c69d4487e05a25b64cd39c67cb6737/commentary/7d2de8c2-a7d8-4aac-b3f7-8daac0553fc5) ------------------------------------------------------------ "Kaine would a great choice: popular senator and former governor of swing state; well-liked in party; former Catholic missionary, fluent in Spanish. And I think it is smart for Ryan to look to future, since 'Where were you on Trump?' question will be big in 2020. I'm hoping for show trials in 2017." —Mike Murphy / Sidewire '4 x 2' (https://sidewire.com/politics/dashboard/articles/87c69d4487e05a25b64cd39c67cb6737/commentary/78a29fc6-5f3d-4259-9ad5-a33614725759) ------------------------------------------------------------ For movie lovers, they both recommend the Spencer Tracy classic "The Last Hurrah (http://www.nytimes.com/movie/review?res=9E07EEDD133FE43ABC4C51DFB6678383649EDE) ," a film about the final campaign of a fictional politician that is based at least partially on legendary Boston Mayor James Michael Curley. JOHN McCAINtold STEVE CLEMONS that the appropriateness of the visit is dependent on what Obama says. They were talking in the debut episode of Steve's recurring Sidewire Chat, "The Convener." ------------------------------------------------------------ "President Obama has decided to visit Hiroshima -- the first city to know the devastation of an atomic bomb.
