I'm happy to include her in the substance of the defense as we dig in, but I don't think she should be on our day to day emalls. It's ultimately your call, of course. Here's my main question about the 10th: is it supposed to be an interview of you, in order to get your responses to their questions? That's what Erin's email makes it sound like (she calls it an "Interview"). If so, then we simply cannot do It on the 10th. We need much more time to dig in to this, and you only get one bite at the apple here. I know changing your flight would be a pain, but it's not that much money and is worth it in the long term. If, instead, this meeting Is simply for you to obtain additional information about some of the allegations, and not to respond to anything, then that's fine —I can Join by phone, and we can listen. But we need to clarify this ASAP—It will piss off Erin if she thinks it's an interview and you walk in with a lawyer unwilling to answer questions. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. Enjoy your week! Hope you are somewhere fun! The meeting in Phoenix is the 10th, not the 11th. As I specifically set up that date with them because it is a day I plan to be in Phoenix (and the flights there cost me while I am on leave) I am inclined to attend the meeting on the 10th and treat It as an information session. What I would Ilke, If it is possible, is to spend an hour of so on the phone or on Skype with you on the 9th, so you can give me directions on what to say and not say.. questions to ask, information to glean, etc.. and I will collect the information, and (unless they say, 'oh lets Just forget the whole thing.. there is nothing her to worry about".. :) ) I indicate to them that a follow up meeting along with my advisor will probably be required a few weeks after that. Sound good? Do you have any time on the 9th (or 8th if you want, or early on the 10th if absolutely necessary)? Lawrence Lawrence M. Has this been sent? In order to better prepare for our meeting, I have a few questions about what you wrote. I am surprised by the list you provided, and confused by the statement that the allegations 'known at this time include but are not limited to' just before you provide a list of general allegations. Does this mean that these are the ones you are considering? Also, do these comprise complaints made to the University or also allegations that appeared online? If a combination, could you describe which is which? What is the policy regarding treating online allegations, tweets etc? Is there a policy regarding the University's jurisdiction in responding to such and what my rights are with regard to such? Thanks a lot for your attention in this matter. Moreover, no one will take seriously the constitutional law arguments of a physicist, no matter how famous he is. You need a lawyer to make those. I don't mean to be rude, but I have to be somewhat jealous with my time so I can focus on the cases in which people have decided to hire me. We spent a lot of time on the phone yesterday, which I was very happy to do, and I am willing to do a short call with Jeffrey, but I can't keep emailing about this. I have a limited amount of time, and I have to make sure that I am spending it as much as possible on my current clients. I assure you that if you hire me and someone else wants to keep talking about their case while they're deciding, I will tell them the same thing--that they have enough information to make a decision and just need to decide. Tell Jeffrey we may have to play phone tag, since my weekend schedule is a little up in the air. So he will need to leave me his number. Bottom line Is that Jeffrey is not only friends with most of the famous people from finance, to business, to Hollywood, who have either been brought down during ',meta° and he also speaks regularly with people ranging from the awful white house people, who he is friends with, to ken start etc. He is concerned about exactly how we play this, as he thinks because of the variety and number of different things being discussed in the media and online, that this will be considered beyond title IX. Hello. lam a Professor at Arizona State University, and also director of its Origins Project. In addition, I am relatively well known to the public. I write NYT bestselling books, appear on television and films, write for the NYT and New Yorker etc.. I am also one of the more well known atheist and skeptic speakers around the world. That celebrity status has made me a target of numerous online defamation campaigns in the past. On Feb 22, 2018, the online tabloid BuzzFeed published a defamatory story about me, following almost 6 months of harassment by them of me, my family, staff, colleagues etc, presenting false daims and then demanding counter•evidence, comment, or response. As a result of that story all of my speaking commitments for the next year have been cancelled, l have been removed from all boards on which I was a member, and at least one book contract has been cancelled. More relevant to this email, my University, which had been aware of many of the Buzzfeed allegations since Dec. but had discounted them, after publication of the story and the associated publicity, and because Buzzfeed made additional allegations associated with several anonymous former employees of inappropriate comments by me, the University has opened an investigation, and has put me on paid leave while that investigation is completed. The initial instigator for the BuzzFeed article, I believe, was an anonymous claim by a 'witness' that I had touched the breast of an unidentified woman during a selfie•photograph session I had agreed to do during a banquet at an event in Melbourne in 2016 (the person whose breast I was supposed to have touched did not make a complaint). The woman who I believe first made the claim last July to my university (Arizona State University) and a second university I am affiliated with (Australian National University), and to BuzzFeed, Is identified as Melanie Thomson in the BuzzFeed story. There is a network of rather angry female members of the atheist and skeptical communities who have been trying to suggest that the community is misogynistic and harassing, and have been trying to bring down prominent male atheists for some time. Ms. Thomson appears to be an active member of this group. As I indicated above, as one of the more outspoken of the bunch, I have been a target of whisper campaigns and false claims on the Internet for some time. In any case, ASU and ANU both investigated and dismissed the original claim, and ANU in their investigation report listed several apparently false features of the evolving allegations of the complainant. Nevertheless, even though they were aware of this fact, BuzzFeed included this claim, among others, in their article about me. Following the BuzzFeed article ASU has now reopened the investigation they closed last October. I don't want to belabor you with further details here. I am contacting you because I want to be prepared to deal with the two ongoing MU investigations. While I have no reason to believe that either will end negatively, I have also learned from my research that there is little support for the rights of accused In such cases at many Universities. Which is where you come In. I would very much like an Initial consult about what my options, rights and advisable actions are at this time, or what they should be, and how you might assist me as things develop. As Title IX issues differ from institution to institution and state to state it seems, I am in need of counsel with considerable experience In these matters to advise me. FYI, many aspects of the story are in the public domain: BuzzFeed article of 22 February 2018 hjapt/Avww bitzzfeed com/peteraldhousilawroncearauss•sexual•harassmmt- allegations?utm term=.gx30yPpoKtujGZrgblY My response to the allegations and methods of the BuzzFeed article hilps-Bririvo 'ode rnm/file/d/ygO{nkAa7vwSMOtFD4iAfwfryTNJb1 %/vim USA Today's AZ central March 7 2018 https://www.azcentral.com/storyinews/local/arizona•education/2018/03/07/asu- prnfecsnr.lawronre•krauss-sayt•sox•micronditryallogations-absurthlibolnits/4n51141107( The New York Times March 7 2018 tatpcliwww.nytimes.com/2018/03/07/science/lawrence-krauss-arizona.state.html In addition there are other relevant information sources of information, if we proceed: communications with BuzzFeed journalists communications with others interviewed by BuzzFeed journalists communications with Arizona State University Title IX officers, and equivalent at Australian National University title IX investigation reports from Arizona State University and equivalent from Australian National University known relationships amongst accusers, Including the journalists. The damage to my reputation has of course been severe. Among the consequences thus far are: •cancellation of all my lecture appearances this year, in Australia (including a 7.city lecture tour with Richard Dawkins), in the US, and Canada, amounting thus far to lost Income excess of S7SK •rescinding of invitations to 2 professional meetings at which I was supposed to give major lectures sostponement (at present) of honorary degree and commencement speaker invitation at Simon Fraser University EFTA00840633 -resignation or removal from 4 boards, Including my position as Chair of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists -cancellation of a book contract for a book being cowritten by me and Noam Chomsky -being put on paid leave by MU and suspended from most ASU campus interactions with colleagues there while they investigate the BuzzFeed allegations -cancellation of the capstone 10th anniversary Origins Project (a program I lead at MU) celebration events in April involving 150 major scholars, celebrities, and public intellectuals from around the world. Thanks. I look forward to hearing from you further in this matter. Lawrence Krauss Lawrence M.
