We touched upon that issue yesterday. Also, there are a variety of different overall heights to the existing Bouganvillea there. We planted them that way intentionally. It would be impossible to prune them in a level manner, following the Ficus hedge pattern, unless we cut the tallest ones down to the level of the shortest ones. I obviously misunderstood Mr. Epstein. I thought we agreed to prune them back to their original state. Again, the only means of making this mass into a similar form as the Ficus hedge, "boxed', is to prune all plants at the same height. I will do this next week if requested. EFTA00885297 I also pruned them this way because I found some minor flower buds coming on in the interior segments of the shrubs, just below our proposed cut lines. I was trying to get him as much color as these plants would offer now. Please let me know how to proceed with this work. We also cleaned up the pool coconuts as well as layed down a pallet of mulch to cover all irrigation hoses and black containers. Mr. Epstein also requested to replace the existing purple Pentas in three beds in the pool area. We did not do that today. I searched several nurseries yesterday but found nothing that would work. I need some guidance from Mr. Epstein regarding this specific issue. He has requested more color in the pool area. He wants purple only. There are no real good choices here. I provided him with the Pentas because it blooms everyday of the year with purple flowers. I thought, even though they last about 1-2 years, that they were the best option. The other purple flowering ground cover varieties are not very good. Can I add more Pentas to the 3 beds? Also, I need a clarification of what he means when he talks of an estate garden. Estate gardens are generally considered to be formal.... Clean straight lines, boxed hedges, predominantly green gardens with minimal use of color. We don't have that type of design or plant species at the house. We planted lots of purple Bouganvillea in the pool area under uneven plantings of Foxtail palms. We can obviously train them to be a "boxed" unit. But we also have informal plantings in that same area including assorted Bromeliads, Pandanus and Zamias (palm-like plants) that can't be trimmed in any formal manner. The south garden fits within the concept of the estate garden. But the service and main driveways really don't either. I need some help in this regard. Again, I want Mr. Epstein to be pleased with all of the grounds but when he speaks of estate gardens, is the term regarding the maintenance of the grounds (keeping particularly plant species constantly trimmed?) Is he referring to the style of the existing gardens? Please help me with this concern. Thank you. alan stopek efflorescence From: Emad Hanna [mailto Sent: Friday, September 11, 2009 15:48 To: Alan Stopek Subject: Landscaping Alan, Mr. Epstein was very surprised to find the Bougainvillea cut back into old lady balls, after he spent lots of time describing that form as the last thing he wanted. They were supposed to grow into a hedge like much wilder look. How is it possible they ended up exactly as we started 6 weeks ago. He is very dissatisfied that you obviously didn't supervise the work adequately and how has a result this is exactly what he along with you decided was specifically not what he wanted.
