John Podesta called me yesterday to check in and we had a great talk. Th points below are what we talked about. I want to make this work for HRC and you--and I get what you need and want, but it might be useful for me to outline what's worked in the past for Kerry and Obama anda few Senate candidates... and then you let me know how I can adapt. Basically there are 4 types of lines that can be useful to a campaign. 1. Speech lines that are quotable and/or make a point: With Favreau and Burton and Wade I knew them and we talked every other day. They constantly sent what areas they wanted and needed responses to. With the lines that were joke-y they blended them so they fit or Burton or Axe used them with the press when they were too edgy for the candidate. Knowing your target areas (past versus future, etc ) helps enormously but to do asides, seeing the stump speech would be great as I can fit asides/inserts in standard language These can be really useful to break up a speech ( in a good way) Even if they seem joke-y on paper, blending them will make them seem like asides--it's like what we do at Gridirons etc Also, I found if the candidate will do them, using and trying out the less "aside-y" lines at a smaller group like a fundraiser is a good exercise 2. Local lines If you want, send me the schedule especially for everyday events. Localizing shows a connection. These lines go in the intro, Example, if HRC is speaking in NYC today and the parade is going on, there would be a reference 3. Press lines The press sec on Kerry and Obama would let me know when he or she needed help with a response, As the race gets more focused one on one this becomes more and more important 4. Debate prep. Way down the road but when the debate team is put together, I would get brought in by Ron Klain. Don't know who will do with you and that's a long way away but file away to integrate me. Bottom line--I get each campaign is different the key is to interact so I can help. I also know how busy you are and asking for the interaction isn't me needing to feel important; it's to make the target narrower for me to aim at.
