Close with a thank you for your support. It means the world to me. Written out text: Thank you all for being here tonight. I especially want to thank Congressman Swalwell for joining us. He is a progressive leader, and he advocates for all in our district. He supports public education at a policy level, and he remains very involved with our schools. One small example of that is that he skyped in to our Stars of Integrity event to congratulate the 100 students who were being honored. He spends a lot of time back home in our district making connections with people, and I admire and respect that very much. It feels good to be in my hometown. Growing up, surrounded by my family and our friends, I could see first hand how important and rewarding it is to be involved, in ways large and small: striving to make our community, and world, a better place. Now that I am involved in my community in Dublin, It is special to come home and be with the people I learned these values from. I’d like to talk a little about Dublin, and my vision for Dublin schools. Dublin has about 50,000 people, we are the third fastest growing city in the state of California. Our school district has 9,000 students, 2x in last 10 years. We are growing by ½ and elementary school a year. We have one high school in Dublin – when Congressman Swalwell graduated in 1999 there were around 1300 students there, when my daughter graduates in 2021, there will be about 3,000. And while growing we have been doing some really good things. We strive to make all our students college and career ready for the global economy. 98% to college. (70% were eligible to attend 4 year college.) We have a supportive community: 2 bond measures, 30+ major projects completed in 10 years, and a parcel tax that was just renewed to support our academic programs including reading, writing, math for all grades, libraries, STEM education, and medical, engineering, and culinary academies. And beyond academics we offer many opportunities in sports, music, and the arts. Just this spring we cut the ribbon for our brand new, state-of-the-art, Performing Arts Center. Our Superintendent is an excellent leader, and our board makes a great team. We have broad support at all levels for common core. Critical thinking, reasoning, and using evidence to support your work. Story about my Gabe wearing flip flops, “Mom, we live in common core now, you have to say why.” Some things that we’ve done recently that I’ve been very involved in: Chromebooks – 3:1 – bringing them into the classroom. Beyond the days of going to the computer lab. Integrated, in the classroom and fully aligned with common core. But mindful of the opportunity gap being created. Not all students have devices and broadband at home. How will we address that? I am determined that we will make progress on this issue. Homework & Grading Policy: established guard rails but teachers need discretion because they really are doing a good job. This was a contentious topic but I worked hard to get us to a compromise position that I think is the right place that we will evaluate in a year to be sure we’re on the right track. We found common ground. This is something I love about being on the board – being involved in the conversation and digging in to listen and learn the issue, and then leading us towards common ground. Someone once said: “Common ground is not a place where you go and wait for folks to show up; it’s a place you go together.” Dublin schools are amazing but there is still much work to do. I believe we can get to the next level and be a leader in excellent public education that provides equity and opportunity for all our students to succeed.
