AU is thanking people in swing districts for their votes on the health care
bill -- certainly not for their votes on the Stupak Amendment.
There are many members of the House who have indicated -- as they should --
that they would not vote for a final bill that has a Stupak type
amendment. That means that a final health care bill with a Stupak like provision
will not become law.
But to be successful at the end of the day, we need to make it clear to
all of the Members of the House that there is incredible support for passing
a health insurance reform bill.
We need to demonstrate to each of them that the political stakes are
simply too high for them to vote no on health care, even when the bill that
comes from conference has a provision that does not alter the current law with
respect to a woman's access to reproductive health services.
That strengthens the hand of all of those who want to pass health care
reform, without a Stupak like provision. The more we all generate the
accurate narrative -- that voting for health care reform is good politics in
every one of these districts -- the more likely we are to get that result.

Most of the people on this list--Carney, Dahlkemper, Driehaus, Ellsworth,
Hill, Perriello, Space, Rodriguez--voted for the abominable Stupak
amendment.
I would be interested to hear why Americans United and AFSCME chose to
thank them.

The historic health insurance reform legislation, which passed in the U.S.
House on Saturday and is now headed to the U.S. Senate, will cover 96
percent of the American people, make coverage more affordable for all
Americans, strengthen Medicare, and finally put an end to the indefensible health
insurance industry practices of denying coverage based on “pre-existing
conditions” and rescinding policies when Americans get sick and need it most. In
addition, the legislation is fiscally responsible and fully paid for. On
July 17, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimated that
the cost of the bill’s reforms was $1.042 trillion over 10 years, while the
bill’s cost savings and revenues totaled $1.048 trillion. For more
information on the Affordable Health Care for America Act, _CLICK HERE_
(http://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/legislation?id=0327) .
Gerald McEntee, President, AFSCME: “Saturday’s vote is real progress in
the fight for health care reform. The House acted to protect seniors
overwhelmed by the cost of prescription drugs and millions of American families
unable to afford basic care because of skyrocketing costs.
Tom McMahon, Acting Executive Director, Americans United for Change: “
President Obama and Congressional Democrats won an overwhelming election
victory last November with the promise of a new direction in America, especially
when it came to spiraling health care costs, the thousands of Americans
each day joining the tens of millions without health insurance – and the
thousands _dying each year because of it. _
(http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/411588_uninsured_dying.pdf) Today, the American people are closer than ever
to realizing long-overdue health insurance reform thanks to these members
of Congress that stood up to big insurance and said ‘yes’ to guaranteeing
all Americans access to quality and affordable health care. These
Representatives faced enormous pressure from the big insurance companies that want
to kill reform so they can keep raising premiums on American families four
times faster than wages, keep rescinding policies when people get sick --
and keep denying Americans based on such “pre-existing conditions” as _being
a victim of domestic abuse_
(http://www.mcclatchydc.com/226/story/76477.html) or _once having had a C-section_
(http://www.americansunitedforchange.org/press/releases/new_tv_ad_to_get_insurance_first_get_sterilized/) . These
Representatives ignored the dishonest rhetoric from the forces of status
quo and listened to their constituents who are sick and tired worrying
_about going bankrupt due to medical bills._
(http://www.amjmed.com/webfiles/images/journals/ajm/AJMMedicalBankruptcyJun09FINAL2.pdf) ”
“We’re sending a message to all members of Congress through this major
advertising effort that supporters of health insurance reform will have their
backs if they choose in the end to side with the _AARP, the American
Medical Association_ (http://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/reports?id=0263) and _the
clear majority of the American people_
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/10/19/AR2009101902451.html) ,” added McMahon,
