Dear Jeffrey,
Back to my office this morning from a two day trip where I just found your email.
As you rightly say the sketches I sent you were just a "first pass".
However I do feel that the idea of a pergola (protected by the wall of the upper terrace) and
reconnected to the lower part of the garden by a succession of natural looking tiers built
with boulders and planting of grass and bushes might very well be be one of the possible
solutions to make this part of the island both resistant to the hurricanes and attractive to
look at.
Should this proposal be given a more detailed study, do realize that the height of the
pergola and the number of the following tiers would have to be reconsidered and adapted to
the grading of the existing slope.
Decorative and practical elements such as walls and "dry river" would be fully integrated as
part of the whole design.
Needless to say a proper parking area for the bike would also be included in the final
design.
Believe me I do know how difficult it can be to visualize what is no more than a concept when
confronted to the reality of the land (and I am speaking for myself) but I sincerely feel
that if you still wish we could adapt this proposal for the greatest benefit of this section
of your property.
Looking forward to hearing from you and to having a chance to discuss further up this project
when you are back to New York.
With my very best regards,
Christian.
