Biden, McCain Have a Friendship -- and More -- in Common (WSJ 8/25/08)
By ELIZABETH HOLMES
A longtime senator with a harrowing personal narrative who boasts a lengthy
foreign policy résumé and is known for speaking his mind. ...In picking Sen.
Biden as his running mate Saturday, Sen. Obama got a partner with striking
similarities to his Republican opponent.

The GOP's Delicate Passing of the Baton (Washington Post 8/25/08)
By Michael Abramowitz; A15
When it gathers next week in Minneapolis-St. Paul for its quadrennial
convention, the Republican Party will try to turn the page from George W.
Bush to John McCain. It won't be an easy trick.

McCain ad aims at swaying Clinton Dems (Politico 8/25/08)
By: Jonathan Martin
Ramping up their effort to drive a wedge between Hillary Clinton's
supporters and Barack Obama, the McCain campaign is to broadcast a new ad
starting Monday featuring the Wisconsin Democrat who lost her slot as a
convention delegate after saying she'd cast her ballot for McCain instead of
Obama here.

Humble pie nourished McCain's campaign (AP 8/24/08)
By CALVIN WOODWARD
Republicans lugged money, fame and promise into their race for the
presidential nomination. One of them carried his own bags, tooled around New
Hampshire with a few volunteers, flew commercial and won. John McCain's diet
of humble pie in the summer of 2007 might have been the best thing that
happened to his campaign.

McCain intrudes on Obama's convention message (AP 8/24/08)
By MIKE GLOVER and JIM KUHNHENN
John McCain certainly won't let Barack Obama have his Democratic convention
all to himself. If Obama has a story to tell voters over the next four days,
McCain is already pitching a far less flattering version from afar.

*Halperin: McCain's Houses Gaffe 'One Of The Worst Moments' Of The Campaign
For…Barack Obama *(ThinkProgress 8/24/08)
Last week Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told Politico that he did not know how
many homes he and his wife Cindy own. "I'll have my staff get to you,"
McCain said. ThinkProgress noted that even though McCain's comment
highlights his poor record on the housing crisis and his economic policies
that primarily benefit the rich, many in the media leaped to McCain's
defense, saying the gaffe was not "a big deal."

A Ballgame and a Slow Day for McCain (WaPo blog 8/24/08)
By Michael D. Shear
Now, it's McCain's turn to take it easy. ... So perhaps McCain deserved an
afternoon off, at the ballgame....Earlier, McCain attended the North Phoenix
Baptist Church... the pastor, Dan Yeary, did show a clip from the Saddleback
Forum earlier in the month. There, on a big screen, was none other than John
McCain, talking about his own greatest moral failure -- the failure of his
marriage.

For McCains, a Public Path but Private Wealth (NYT 8/23/08)
By DAVID M. HALBFINGER
When Senator John McCain is in Washington, he lives in a luxury high-rise
condominium in Arlington, Va., owned by his wife, Cindy Hensley McCain. Mrs.
McCain also owns their condos in Phoenix, San Diego and Coronado, Calif.,
and their vacation compound near Sedona, Ariz. And it is the beer business,
Hensley & Company, she inherited from her father that is the source of the
McCain family fortune. That fortune makes Mr. McCain one of the richest
members of the Senate. Yet barely a sliver of it is in his name.

McCain's Record Of Opposition To Clean Energy (Wonk Room 8/23/08)
This week, the Center for American Progress Action Fund and the University
of Las Vegas organized a nonpartisan national clean energy summit in Nevada
with Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), former president Bill Clinton, conservative
energy entrepreneur T. Boone Pickens, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg

McCain's Proposed Cuts Insufficient To Pay For McCain's Proposed Wars (Wonk
Room 8/23/08)
By Lawrence Korband Laura Conley
In his two terms in office, President Bush has managed to turn a budget
surplus of $236 billion in 2000 into a projected deficit of $482 billion in
2009. Last month, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, senior economic adviser to Senator
John McCain (R-AZ), submitted the presumptive Republican nominee's budget
proposal to the Washington Post editorial board. In it, McCain proposes to
balance the federal budget by 2013, in part by curbing defense expenditures.
While there is certainly a need to cut wasteful and unnecessary spending in
the Pentagon budget, this proposal is a tepid effort at best.

New McCain Ad Hits Obama Again (CBS blog 8/22/08)

The war over which candidate is out of touch with the common man

Obama: "Celebrities don't have to worry about family budgets, but we sure

Pundits And Writers Start Hitting McCain For Non-Stop P.O.W. References (TPM
8/22/08)
By Greg Sargent
As all you regulars know, the McCain camp's constant evocation of his P.O.W.
past as an all-purpose shield against any and all criticism is a singular
obsession of this blog.

FL Dems: 'Priceless' (Politico blog 8/22/08)
By Ben Smith
State Democratic parties are gleefully driving Obama's message today, and
the Florida Party is up with a video echoing the shots at McCain's houses
and his shoes, and going a bit further than Obama does: It features footage
of Cindy McCain talking about the virtues of traveling by private plane.

OPINIONS AND EDITORIALS
LAMBRO: A changeless party? (Washington Times 8/25/08)
For weeks, John McCain has been pounding Barack Obama in TV ads that depict
him as an inexperienced, in-over-his-head celebrity candidate who is not up
to the job of commander in chief. And for most of that time, the freshman
Democratic senator, who said he offered the voters "a new kind of politics,"
has not responded with an effective counteroffensive of his own.

Accentuate the Negative (NYT 8/25/08)
By PAUL KRUGMAN
So the Obama campaign has turned to the politics of personal destruction,
attempting to make a campaign issue out of John McCain's inability to
remember how many houses he has. And the turn comes not a moment too soon.

McCain's reality isn't ours (Chicago Sun-Times 8/24/08)
Joe Bungalow, we ask you to peek in your closet and count how many pairs of
shoes you own. Five pairs? Maybe six? Consider this: John McCain's family
owns more homes than you own shoes.

Too Much of a Bad Thing (NYT 8/24/08)
By MAUREEN DOWD
...[McCain's] campaign is cheapening his greatest strength — and making a
mockery of his already dubious claim that he's reticent to talk about his
P.O.W. experience — by flashing the P.O.W. card to rebut any criticism, no
matter how unrelated.

Last Call for Change We Can Believe In (NYT 8/24/08)
By FRANK RICH
As the presidential race finally gains the country's full attention, the
strategy Barack Obama used to vanquish Hillary Clinton must be rebooted to
take out John McCain. ...McCain's trigger-happy temperament and reactionary
policies offer worse than no change. He is an unstable bridge back not just
to Bush policies but to an increasingly distant 20th-century America that is
still fighting Red China in Vietnam and the Soviet Union in the cold war. As
the country tries to navigate the fast-moving changes of the 21st century,
McCain would put America on hold.

The Point: A man of words is a man of substance (Philadelphia Inquirer
8/24/08)
By Mark Bowden
Given the manifest rhetorical talents of Barack Obama, oratory itself has
become an issue in this year's presidential campaign. Attacking the Illinois
senator for being a great orator may be like condemning Ryan Howard for
hitting home runs, but John McCain, being a military man, knows that
sometimes the best move is a frontal assault on his enemy's strongest point.

Extreme Campaign Makeover (Washington Post 8/23/08)
IT USED TO BE that scandals were named for buildings. (Remember Watergate?)
Now, it seems, they're about buildings. John McCain doesn't know how many
houses he and his wife own. Barack Obama bought his with an assist from a
man later convicted of felonies. So much for the substantive, high-road
campaign.

McCain's Drill Appeal (NYT 8/23/08)

Mr. Obama, I'm stunned. You've allowed John McCain to use the energy issue
to steal your momentum and erase your lead in the polls. ... Yes, I know.
