Need a few minutes on a call now Can we do in 10 minutes 03:31:06 pm On plane Landing my in 3 hrs 03:33:44 pm Or text if you like 03:34:05 pm Just sent you the email exchange 03:37:51 pm Here's the situation 03:37:57 pm EFTA01613199 Among three assignments - Bill asked me to help write up recommendations and a plan for his Alzheimer vision. He told me he wanted to decide what to do in a few months and he wanted me to think about it differently and like i did for special initiatives in the old days. Then larry confirmed and said great. Then the team of bose and Jonah (the really annoying technical assistant of bills and the communications guy) were supposed to help me and update me in what was done. They did nothing and lied to me about what they had and what was happening For example: 1. They wrote a whole strategy for bill and sent it to him two weeks after i started. I wasn't copied - bill sent it to me and asked if I knew about it. 2. They didn't invite me to any internal gathering in the topics and then Larry would ask why I wasn't stay the meetings. 3. They call people that bill asked me to speak to and tell them they don't need to talk to me. 4. Then 2 weeks ago they hired McKinsey to do exactly my job, same instruction as I was given. 03:42:54 pm Last week larry invited me to dinner wionah and asked me to talk about what I had been working in for Alzheimer ideas since I hadn't been at any meetings etc. I walked through the seven ideas I sent you a few days previously and he loved them. He was high fiving me and telling Jonah this is how we need to think about it etc. and of course Jonah said well this isn't how we are thinking about it and melanie needs to meet with McKinsey and get updated. So I did. And they have no clue what they are doing. No experience in Alzheimer and will need to dona full landscape etc and then won't come up w anything creative. I've worked nearly 15 years for bill and know how he thinks about these things since I used to run his special projects. I understand also the neuro space very directly. 03:46:30 pm EFTA01613200 Bose told me that 1. I was not going to be involved in anything for bgc3 going forward and that his role was providing advice to bill not mine. 2. Any of my work needed to go through him. Etc. 03:48:12 pm That seems to be the attitude of everyone working there. My goal is to end my assignment there with integrity and knowing I did exactly what was asked and did it super well. I would like to submit my list of options to bill and larry and say - I've discussed these with Larry. I do not want to pass them on to McKinsey. The ideas are too good and the result of a lot of my own work and unique experiences after 25 years doing neuro. But bose and Jonah keep sending me mail and voicemail to share w McKinsey. I'm afraid we will have two strategies - one formulaic and industry focused by McKinsey and one that mirrors bill's way of thinking, his hopes for impact and sensitivity for risk. 03:52:09 pin • What should I do? 03:52:16 pin Ask bill what he wants 03:57:48 pm That was the purpose of my drafted note. I dont want him to forward to larry so I need to think of something to put in there that • will stop him from forwarding 04:05:52 pm EFTA01613201 1212 5333739 Add going to miss our hangar meetings . He won't forward that 04:11:26 pm I've never said I missed him or anything about him to him might freak him out - is there another clever way to say same thing Like look forward to our next xx 04:14:11 pm When we were on the lake/ hangar - you told me you wanted unique and not boring ideas ? 04:16:24 pin Perfect 04:19:42 pm More soon call now Will send you a draft short note 04:19:51 pm My dear friend Sam just died. He's also a very good friend of Larrys. Larry and I ended up at Sam's bedside for the past 2 hours crying. Was weird. Am home now. Need to reboot. 07:30:38 pm Bill also loved Sam and will be writing up a memorial to him. 07:30:54 pm EFTA01613202 Sam Dryden Bill and Melinda Gates We were deeply saddened to learn that our friend, mentor, and advisor Sam Dryden died this morning. Sam led our foundation's agricultural development work for years, shaping the way we think about development in general, and even after his illness forced him to step down, he continued to work tirelessly toward a better future for smallholder farmers in developing countries. Sam's childhood as the son of poor farmers in Kentucky led him to imbue this work with more humanity than anyone else we know. Smallholder farmers weren't a category to him; they were people, and the food-system cartoon he always carried around had a picture of a farmer right in the middle, to remind everybody who we were working for. Sam's generosity as a friend and mentor to us and countless others was legendary. He was as likely to be on the phone with the waiter at his favorite restaurant or the young son or daughter of an old friend as with the head of the world food program or the minister of agriculture of a large country. Sam was curious about everyone. He loved everyone. And so many people loved him back. As two of those people, we thank him for what we learned from him, for the impact his work had on millions, and for the joy he brought into our lives. 07:45:42 pm PET-MRI hybrid scanner so cool EFTA01613203 11:01:22 pm Enlarge the photo - amazing Once someone figures out how to add spectroscopy to this machine we no longer need surgery or biopsies or lab studies or any kind 11:03:38 pm 2017/08/11 Can I still come see you Friday morning in NYC next week before I leave for Israel 06:41:47 pm And btw Do you have any thoughts on what Stevie could be doing next I think he's ready 06:46:23 pm EFTA01613204 He thinks he's explored everything and there are no options He says the head hunters say he's an icon and that's threatening to big company CEOs etc 06:47:18 pin I'd like to see him doing something other than VC 06:47:31 pm Yes 18 06:52:30 pm I think steve wants to do boards 07:48:21 pm Hey cool I think I will see ed boyden Tuesday in Boston 10:10:27 pin Should I talk to him about cool science ideas and see what he thinks?
