KEY BLOCK----- Hello BigCampaign, Just off the phone with our tracker Evan who was on the ground today in Orlando, FL. Below are the notes from our call. *Big Highlights* - Asked about how Vietnam applies to Iraq - Says he's "proud of America now" because we're divided about the war but not about the soldiers - He's surprised at Americans patience with Iraq given mismanagement - Stumbles but says he voted against Everglades restoration bill because it was an omnibus bill - Repeats "The fundamentals of the economy are very strong" - Suggests town hall proposal will alleviate people's feeling we're on the wrong-track * * *Lake Buena Vista, FL: McCain Speech 06/05/08* * * Background Details - There were teleprompters at the event, but McCain didn't use them. Unclear whether there was a malfunction or he decided off-the-cuff not to use them. - Audience: Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and Florida Press Association. 150-300 people. White, middle-aged. - Venue: Closed convention inside Walt Disney World Resort Hilton ballroom. - Cindy was there. Didn't see any of the other McCain family members or notable staffers. - Very very few McCain staffers: handful of traveling aides, didn't see any local/ground staffers. - Our tracker had no trouble getting in. Local police took were more of a presence than Secret Service. - Press: heavy on print news; also ABC, NBC, Fox and Univision cameras; and lots of local press. - Introductory remarks by Executive VP of St. Petersburg Times, Marty Petty. Speech Highlights - In intro, Marty Petty notes that the event format will be town hall meeting, according to McCain's desire. *Opening Remarks* - McCain says he's just watched "Recount" "one of the more interesting times in America's history" · Politicians claim allegiance everywhere they go, but I think I can make a legit claim for affection for this state. Florida has been important to MCCAIN in this election and in his personal life (Pensacola flight training; family in FL while he was a POW; Cecil Field) - Reiterates that this will be long, hard and well-fought campaign, one of respect. That's why he proposed town halls to BHO. Hypes up benefits of this format: democracy, dialogue; he's learned so much. JFK-Goldwater model. Hopes that we can agree to this proposal. When 81% of people feel we're on the wrong track, it's even more important to include people in this process. - Mentions his interview with Charlie Gibson: "Without thinking long" McCain told him that 3 major issues are reform, prosperity and peace. o (1) REFORM: Doesn't need to tell anyone in FL how hard housing crisis has been. We need to restore people's trust in government, that it can work. People have figured out that Washington is not working for them. But I have a record of reform, of bipartisanship - that's how you get things done in DC. After 9/11 there was some real bipartisanship. § We need to eliminate earmarks. We haven't always done it. It has bred corruption. We have to reform this so we can have credibility with the American people for other reforms. § We must reform Social Security, Medicare. Also Air Traffic Control system—hurts tourism. SS—"it's going to require some tough decisions." Because we can't hand off a broken system to the next generation. § Cites examples of his bipartisanship: Gang of 14, campaign finance reform, immigration reform. Sometimes I've won, sometimes I've lost, but always I put the American people first. o (2) PROSPERITY: Americans are worried. "We have to give them a clear blueprint," e.g. reassure that people can stay in their homes by a 30-year guaranteed FHA loan. We're on the verge of a revolution, like the Industrial Revolution. Old jobs aren't coming back—when I go to MI and see people affected by auto industry, "it's heartbreaking." We have to take care of the displaced workers: education and training. A job is more than a job—it's self-respect. o *"The fundamentals of our economy are very strong."* o Energy independence is key. Green technologies are beneficial and profitable. 50% of Brazilians' cars are now powered by alternate energy and we just passed the farm bill, which I opposed; Sen. Obama supported it. We're giving tax breaks to thorough-bred horse owners, and asparagus owners. o (3) PEACE-- We're in 2 wars. § "This is a global struggle, and it's not going to be over soon." But I will not give up. § And there's Afghanistan. Pakistan is affecting it. I've been to Waziristan. Straight-talk: there's corruption in Afghanistan. There are nations—not as many as we want, but there are many—committed to helping us in Afghanistan. o And the central battleground, as Petraeus says, Iraq. I argued for the surge strategy, even though all the pundits and everyone was against it. We are winning in Iraq now. § Iraqi govt and military now in control of 3 largest cities in Iraq. § There are many enemies there: AQI, Shiite militias, former Baathists, etc. § Maliki has shown some very strong leadership. If we had done what my opponents wanted to do—a date for withdrawal—we would've been back, it would've been a victory for Iranian influence in the region. The benefits of success are enormous; e.g. a check on Iranian influence, Iraqis will never see return of another Hussein. § "I believe we will prevail in Afghanistan *over time*" § We have to be more multilateral, we have to be more reasoned. § Believes this century will be, like the 20th century, "an American century." Question and Answer - Q1 (Rosemary Goodrow, Tampa Tribune): Your relationship with the media. Early on, you were unique in giving easy access to the press. And "look what happened… you are where you are today." But AZ Republic reporter said you had no relationship with them. What did you learn about easy access to the media and how would that guide a MCCAIN presidency? MCCAIN: (1) I respectfully disagree with that characterization of my relationship with the AZ Republic; I had a very close relationship with the traveling reporter with me from there. I had a rocky relationship with AZ Republic for years, but then that improved. I love being on the back of the bus. Sometimes I make mistakes, and I understand that. the benefit to that in my view is that members of the media really know what I'm all about. I will continue to try to give the media access. Logistics are harder now that we're hopping from state to state. I've tried to have a good relationship with all the AZ press. - Q2 (Tampa Tribune): Racism and sexism, subtle and not, were in Dem primary. What will you do to prevent this from being a problem in the general? MCCAIN: I believe American people will judge the candidates based on their merits. there were elements that entered into the race that threatened that. I'm proud of how Sen Clinton inspired a generation of women—I know as a father of 3 daughters. Obama inspired people too. I will do everything I can to keep anything that could be that kind of ugliness out of this campaign. You have to keep anything disrespectful out of the campaign, I have a record of that. - Q3) What would you do to keep inflation in check? MCCAIN: (1) I would've vetoed the farm bill: it's distorted the market and artificially encouraged bad choices in the agriculture business. (2) I'm worried about the dollar- tied to costs of gas, for instance. Some of us remember the crisis in the 1970s. I was glad to see Bernanke making comments yesterday that we need to strengthen the dollar. (3) We need to get spending under control, which makes us borrow from China, then pay interest. The difference between 1982 and today is that then we restrained spending when we would cut taxes. (4) I don't know where price of oil is going to stop. That puts tremendous pressure on economy. So we need energy independence. Innovation makes costs go down. o Inflation is a great threat that looms on the horizon. I have a plan of action to address it. - Q4) Paul Tash, St Petersburg Times. What are the historical lessons that you draw from Vietnam that may apply to the course ahead in Iraq? MCCAIN: (1) My experience in Nam made me hate war. And when the country was divided, that made it even harder for our vets to come home. "And I'm proud of America now. Because we are divided about the war" but not about the soldiers. And when we were defeated—but we never lost a battle—we had to fix the military. (2) On a broader level, you have to maintain the support of the people when sending young people to war. A lot of people are surprised at Americans' current impatience. I'm surprised at their patience, given that the war was so badly mishandled for 4 years. The American people and the Congress need to be informed, because if they're gonna be involved in the landing, they have to be involved in the takeoff. I would hold weekly town halls. (3) Remember the Powell Doctrine. One of the fundamental errors—see *Fiasco* or Cole—is we weren't prepared following the military success. I believe that since we're a special nation, we have special responsibilities. I'm worried about isolationism, since there's evil of radical Islamic extremism. (4) I learned a lot from reading about Vietnam War after I came back. War must always be the last resort. - Q5 (Rick Hirsh, Miami Herald): Last year you opposed a $2B Everglades restoration bill— MCCAIN: Was it part of an omnibus bill? HIRSH: Yes. MCCAIN: There's your answer. … I'll let you finish. … I am committed to the preservation of the Everglades. If it were a stand-alone bill, it'd be different. I'll be glad to look at that vote, but I don't memorize the number on that vote. … I oppose out of control spending. - Q6: Last year, your attempts at immigration reform failed. As Pres, what would be the first things you would do to put that effort back on track? MCCAIN: Ted Kennedy and I worked on that bill in bipartisan fashion. That bill was comprehensive, including a way to secure our borders. We failed because Americans didn't believe that, remembering 1986 amnesty law. We can secure our borders; then temporary worker program; then we can address the issue of the 12 million people who are here illegally—'administer justice' to the 2 million that have come here recently, and the other 10 million should not be privileged over people who came legally. This is a federal issue. I've failed a lot of times at getting legislation through, but I have shown I can make bipartisan efforts. - Q7 (Carrie Eberly, Florida Daily): Are you comfortable not being able to send Americans into space for 7 (?) years? More NASA support? MCCAIN: I would be willing to spend taxpayer dollars on that. I am disturbed that we'd have to depend on Russia, and also now China. I think Americans would be very willing to do that, not to mention what space exploration contributes to American betterment. - Q8: (Michael Lewis, Miami Today): How would you as President do earmark reform? MCCAIN: You'd know their names, I'd make them famous. Some of it already is, e.g. "bridge to nowhere"—they know it was $230million. - Thanks audience for all they do. I am not for the Fairness Doctrine. You are going through a lot of challenges because of technology. -- Sara DuBois Deputy Director, Tracking/Media Monitoring Progressive Media USA [email protected] 202-609-7681 (office) 410-967-7306 (cell) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "big campaign" group.
