Tom McIver, who is a small time librarian in Cleveland, Ohio, who is a creationist and UFO enthusiast, has spent more than the past twenty-five years relentlessly stalking (offline and increasingly on-line), slandering, defaming and libeling me to just about every person, group, company, conference, foundation, or organization that I have ever come in contact with, been an invited participant of, served on the Board of, or even been remotely connected with. In addition, Mr. McIver sends unsolicited letters to my scientific colleagues, business acquaintances, friends, associates, as well as people that I don't even know. He frequently tries to get the press interested in "his story." He sometimes uses proxies to spread false statements (so that it appears that he has multiple independent supporters), and has caused me no end of damage to both my business and reputation. He has fabricated statements and documents, fabricated letters and documents against me (in the last legal process against him, the actual authors of such purported defamatory letters that Mr. McIver provided, testified under oath, that they had never penned such letters, and had exactly the opposite experience than what was stated in the defamatory letter). Mr. McIver lied about official documents, and put false words and statements into my mouth that I have never uttered (putting me in a false light or appearing to be dishonest), and so on. Literally hundreds of letters have gone out by him accusing me of almost every felon, crime, and misdeed one can think of. It is not my place to try to understand his psychological motivations, and I will not address them here, other than to say, I have had scant dealings with him (certainly never any business dealings) and have only met him a EFTA00702154 few times when I was running a public group out of Caltech way back in the 80s that was skeptical of pseudoscientific claims and junk science. The group naturally attracted its outspoken opponents from the fringes of society and belief. His antagonism spilled onto me from that time on and he has been like a limpet and growing monster ever since. Many intelligent people dismiss his ramblings, and detailed timelines (of my life, private events, guest lists, supposed private conversations, etc) as that of a deranged individual and stalker that he truly is, but there are others who do not know me well, and it clouds and stains one's judgment, and has resulted in many sudden inexplicable losses of relationship and business, including in very recent times. McIver always requests that his sent information is kept "confidential" and that it is not sent to me, but every so often it is passed on, by someone who knows me better and thinks I should take it to "the authorities." Several years ago, I finally realized how damaging he was being and successfully sued Mr. McIver for libel and slander - after a period of intense discovery on all the issues, the judge stated that it was "the worst case of libel and slander" that he had ever experienced. Mr. McIver was placed under Court Order to immediately cease and desist, and never to speak or write about me to anyone ever again. It was a particularly harsh order. Mr. McIver, his wife, and daughter (who I have never met), also had to sign the Court Order, as they too, were brought in as McIver's proxies, putting up negative reviews of my books on amazon.com, vandalizing my Wikipedia entry, and putting up libelous comments on posted versions of my talks, which were featured on line. Unfortunately, Mr. McIver is up to his old tricks again, spreading the same defamatory information that he spread the first time, in spite of the Court Order, and recent orders from my attorney's to cease and desist, who I regrettably had to reactivate again at my expense. It is our understanding that he has tried to contact you and been in contact with your Foundation. Mr. McIver is not a person of means, and suing will have no real economic impact on him, and the criminal penalties for stalking and libel are not stiff. Nevertheless, I am compelled by necessity to stop his continuing harassment, libel, slander, and stalking of not only me, but now also of Isabel, who you can imagine is intensely distressed by his actions. In this age of lightning fast communications, someone who is obsessed can do an enormous amount of damage armed with a computer, email access, and persistence. It is the world we live in... As many of you are in the public eye, you understand the problems that can be out ther. If this individual or any of his proxies has sent you any information in any way of a defamatory nature, please let me know right away, as we are now seeking civil and criminal charges against him. Again, I apologize for the nature of this email, and hope that you can understand my frustration and very intense distress in this matter.
