Dear Richard,
It was a pleasure speaking with you =his morning.
Per our discussion, we are actively looking for top works of =rt for the forthcoming April 18th sale here
in NY. We =Iready have fantastic lots coming up, including some major Egyptian =orks, plus a large group of Greek vases.
As for marbles, I have =ot seen much, although we do have a very fine Roman marble torso. =ur recent sales indicate
that the market is super-heated and the demand =or "masterpiece" level objects is at an all-time high, =nd not just with
traditional collectors of ancient art. We are =eeing buying from across the globe, including Latin America, the Gulf =nd
now China as well. The deadline for inclusion in the April =ale is mid- to late-February.
In terms of the estimates, my suggestions as follows:
Herakles $1,500,000/2,500,000
Two Boys $600,000/800,000
As mentioned previously provenance has =ecome a key factor for success at auction. We know both the
=erakles and the two boys come from the Estate of Jan Mitchell, and =dditionally that the boys were acquired by him
from Fallani, who has =onfirmed this with us. Thanks to the former curator of Greek and =oman at the MET, we have
sufficient information that confirms both =ieces have sufficient provenance to fulfill Christie's =equirements. If there is a
way to find out if Mitchell acquired =he Herakles prior to 1970, its salability would increase =ramatically.
My estimates are not etched in stone so I would be happy to =iscuss further if the numbers do not meet
expectations.
Please do not hesitate to let me know =f you have any questions or concerns, and I look forward to
hearing =rom you soon.
