WEEKEND's READINGS Most of the world is focusing on the London Olympics, which is living up to the hype as there have been a number of brilliant performances.... Lost was Mitt Romney's first international trip to showcase his foreign policy skills, with more missteps than a Chevy Chase sketch on Saturday Night Live..... With this said I start by inviting you to read William Bradley's piece in The Huffington Post, ROMNEY'S DANGEROUS BUFFOONERY, as it says it For a smart guy, (and I am sure that Mitt Romney is intelligent), his pandering to the far right of the Republican Party may have worked in the Primaries, but on the world stage he is as clumsy as Rick Perry was during the Republican Primaries, with the foreign policy skills of a Sarah Palin, and paraphrasing Dick Cheney in an ABC interview last week, "she was not ready for prime time." And neither is Mitt Romney "It would be funny if it weren't so dangerous. At a time ofmultiple geopolitical crises, with the Middle East a literal powder keg, we just had the presumptive presidential nominee of a major party making his international debut like the worst caricature of the ugly American"..... William Bradley EFTA00712198 Echoing William Bradley is an article in the New York Times by Thomas Friedman, WHY NOT IN VEGAS... As Thomas Friedman says, "The observation is this: Much of what is wrong with the U.S.- Israel relationship today can be found in that Romney trip. In recent years, the Republican Party has decided to make Israel a wedge issue. In order to garner more Jewish (and evangelical) votes and money, the decided to "out-pro-Israel" the Democrats by being even more unquestioning of Israel. This arms race has pulled the Democratic Party to the right on the Middle East and has basically forced the Obama team to shut down the peace process and drop any demands that Israel freeze settlements. This, in turn, has created a culture in Washington where State Department officials, not to mention politicians, are reluctant to even state publicly what is U.S. policy — that settlements are "an obstacle to peace — for fear of being denounced as anti-Israel." The article ends with Friedman challenging U.S. politicians — Republicans and Democrats - stop feeding off this conflict for political gain. Stop using this conflict as a backdrop for campaign photo-ops and fund-raisers. Stop making things even worse by telling the most hard-line Israelis everything that they want to hear, just to grovel for Jewish votes and money, while blatantly ignoring the other side. There are real lives at stake out there. If you're not going to do something constructive, stay away. They can make enough trouble for themselves on their own. Enough with Mitt Romney now, as I will get back to him later in the Politics Section.... If you haven't noticed it, our climate has drastically changed over the recent years, and whether you want to call it Global Warming or Climate Change, something is happening and there is evidence that human involvement has contributed to it.... THE COLLAPSE OF THE CLIMATE CONTRARIANS by Juan Cole in RSN is a notice that we may have hit the tipping point and that if we don't do something soon future generations will inherit a much different world than what we enjoy today. Just in case you need more convincing, please read James Hausen article in The Washington Post, CLIMATE CHANGE IS HERE - AND WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT..... because it is.... FINANCE Just having spent almost a week in Greece, I can tell you that Greece is in trouble and austerity is not the only answer.... because without a doubt the bankers who profit on how much loans they book, instead of their success.... These International bankers who like their counterparts here in America who issued "liar loans" to millions of people who couldn't afford them, they solution now is to give countries like Greece and Spain more loans instead of biting the bullet and writing them down, because in my businesses if I make a bad decision, taxpayers won't bail me out.... Included this week is WHY DID INVENTOR OF 'TOO BIG TO FALL' CHANGE HIS MIND? By Matt Tabbi In the now-legendary Squawk Box interview of former Citigroup chairman Sandy Weill, in which the creator of the Too-Big-To-Fail model told an astonished Andrew Ross Sorkin that it was time to break up the Too-Big-To-FAIL BANKS. Fascinating read EFTA00712199 POLITICS In CAPITALISM, NOT CULTURE, DRIVES ECONOMIES by Fareed Zakaria is a commentary/analysis that hits back at Mitt Romney who pandering to fundraising audience in Israel, said that Israel's economic vitality to Palestinian poverty was due to cultural differences.... It is reminiscent to the days when white Americans would openly say that Black athletes could not play the position of quarterbacks.... And this was not loss in the rest of the Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent, Africa and elsewhere where people of color live.... And it definitely wasn't loss by Fareed Zakaria. Since we are back on Mitt Romney again, please take a read of WHY I WANT TO VOTE FOR ROMNEY by John Talbott in the Huffington Post, as it lists 21reasons why not.... In Lori Montgomery's editorial in The Washington Post, STUDY- ROMNEY TAX PLAN WOULD RESULT IN CUTS FOR RICH, HIGHER BURDEN FOR OTHERS, lays waste to any thought that the Romney Tax Plan will help everybody.... In the New York Times editorial THE TRUTH ABOUT MILITARY CUTS he Truth About Military Cuts.... I don't understand why the US military budget is more than the next 24 countries in the world and we are no safer than Brazil, Australia, Switzerland or South Africa.... And for Conservatives in either party to suggest that we would be less safe if we cut the Military budget in half is rediculious.... And to play it as a political card should be considered treason. Charles Blow's article in The New York Times about VOTER SUPPRESSION AND POLITICAL POLLS is one of the ugliest stories of this Presidential election. The fact that the Republican Party is aggressively trying to suppress voting is as ugly as segregation... And it is not just people of color, as they are trying to make it harder for seniors and urban voters to vote.... I was in South Africa when Black voters stood in line for hours to exercise their right to vote for the first time, modeled on American democracy. Today, after Florida in 2000 and now with Republicans trying to do everything they can to hinder anyone who might vote for a Democrat, we are quickly becoming the laughing stock around the world..... Representative Steven LaTourette ofOhio, one ofthefew moderate Republicans left in the House, said on Tuesday lie couldn't take it anymore and would not seek re-election after nine terms. "There are people on the right and the left who think that ifyou compromise you're a coward, you're a facilitator, you're art appeasen" he said, adding that "people are more interested infighting with each other than they are in getting the no-brainers done and governing." Dear Friends, I hope that you enjoy and I am sorry for missing last week's offerings.... Sincerely, Greg Brown Rare old photographs ... These are amazing photos.
