A pair of Louis XVI finely carved and gilded wood marquise with peach silk
velvet upholstered rectangular backs, arm rests and loose cushions; with lapped and
beaded carving on the arms and supports, above a dart carved apron flanked by paterae
carvings on carved and spiral turned legs, on pieds Loupe feet. With its original gilding.
Ailsa Mellon Bruce (1903-1969) was a passionate and prolific collector of
European furniture and decorative arts. She was the only daughter of Andrew Mellon,
the Pittsburgh banker, art collector and statesman.
