Subject: Fwd: Action this week? Provost's earlier emails. Get copy of original report?
An interesting discovery by me. The first i=vestigation was supposed to protect me from having to deal with further
com=laints about the same issue. See below.

Dear Justin and Courtney:
I wanted to ask you whether, if I do not hear=anything today, You or I can or should contact either Erin or the Provost
r=garding the current process, as it is well past the timeframe Erin indicate= for its resolution. I also realize that I never
received the o=iginal report in October regarding the conclusion of the first investigatio=, and that it would be useful to
have a copy of that, to see specifically h=w it was worded, etc, so that we can see what it said and did not say. &nbs=;l
was going to email the provost's office and ask for that. =K?
In preparation=for writing a letter requesting that report I went back to correspondence f=om the Provost to see if I had
ever received any info on that report other t=an the fact that the case we dismissed, which I only heard from OEI, and I
s=e this letter. NOTE THE SENTENCE I HAVE HIGHLIGHTED. Doesn =99t this suggest they would not reopen the
investigation into Melbourne eve= if there were further complaints? Should we do anything with this?</=iv>
Thanks for answerin= my 3 questions.

Dear Lawrence
I understand your concern regarding the p=ocess of investigating complaints. Your point regarding the
sensitivity=of these investigations is very well taken. As I'm sure you can=appreciate, it's very challenging to determine
what complaints may b= valid or invalid, when one initially receives incomplete and one-sided inf=rmation. =/span>But
university policy requires us to investigate complaints re=arding discrimination. Thus the Office of Equity and Inclusion
takes al= allegations seriously. They do not begin with any assumptions about gu=lt or innocence. And= in your case,
the process worked; there was an inquiry and a quick determi=ation that there were no grounds to assert a
violation.&nb=p;
You suggest that because the v=nue was unrelated to ASU, the university had no authority to investigate th=
concerns reported. However, my understanding is that you were listed o= the program as an ASU faculty member.
Given your reputation and s=ature in your field, it's difficult to dissociate from your officia= position. That implies that
you were there as a representative of ASU as o=posed, for example, to participating in a political rally as part of an
ano=ymous crowd.
While I realize that it's uncomfortable b=ing the subject of an investigation, the process also protect= you; you
were cleared. Should any additional complaints regardin= that episode come to us, we will simply indicate that.=/o:p>
<=:p class="">
I hope this helps to clear up some of your concerns regard=ng the process; our goal is to insure that such
investigations are handled p=omptly and fairly, and we will continue to seek ways to improve.
Thank you for reaching out.
