Lois Herr for Congress LOIS HERR - DEMOCRAT FOR CONGRESS - PA-16 SOLUTIONS RATHER THAN IDEOLOGIES, PROBLEM SOLVING RATHER THAN POLITICS Lois Herr understands the challenging times we live in and brings the combination of problem solving, business, community, and farm experience that our Congressional District needs in Washington. Herr respects the values of her family and its history in this area - Mennonite immigrants who fled persecution and came to America in 1710 seeking religious freedom, and bringing with them a sense of community, stewardship of the earth, and a commitment to peaceful co-existence with others. More directly, Herr's father - coach Ira Risser Herr - taught her to compete to win while always playing fair. Her mother - teacher Kathryn Nisley Herr - showed through 103 years that one can adapt to a changing world without losing one's core values. Education has always been central to Herr's life, with her own degrees earned from Elizabethtown College (BA), the University of Pennsylvania (MA), and Fordham University (MBA). She has been successful in business, education, and government. In all these areas Herr has utilized her ability to bring people together to solve problems, whether paving the way to bring women into phone company management in the 70s, getting New Yorkers and New Englanders to agree on policies and practices, or getting developers and preservationists in Lancaster County to see the need for a rural growth strategy. Herr worked for Bell Telephone Laboratories. AT&T, New York Telephone, and NYNEX; she also was selected as a Presidential Interexchange Executive to work under President Gerald Ford in the White House Office of Management and Budget. While in telecommunications. Herr amassed experience in line operations, sales and marketing, government relations, corporate planning, and finance. Later she would own and operate a small farm in Manheim, Lancaster County, restoring her 1800s log home. Equally comfortable in the city or on the farm, she next established herself in higher education on the faculty and administration of Elizabethtown College. There she taught marketing, served as the college's Director of Marketing and Public Affairs, and is currently Scholar-in-Residence. Herr authored two books: Women, Power, and AT&T: Winning Rights in the Workplace and Dear Coach: Letters Home from World War II. Along the way, Herr served on volunteer civic and service organization boards, led her local Rotary Club as President and chaired the Lancaster County Planning Commission. Politically, Herr served as Executive Director of the Lancaster County Democratic Committee in 2007-08, was elected to the County and State Democratic Committees, and was a delegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Herr is running for Congress because she believes the 16th Congressional District deserves a representative who will bring solutions rather than ideology and will emphasize problem solving over politics to address the vital interests of Berks, Chester, and Lancaster Counties. Herr's background shows her ability to understand and help diverse groups of people and work with them on important issues. This is exactly what Herr will do as a Representative in Congress. Her strengths as a listener who finds common ground and leads others toward solutions will benefit all of us. The 16th Congressional District - from Berks to Lancaster to Chester County - will be better off with a leader who cares, who is competent, and who is strongly related to the people she serves.
