From: Richard Kahn <te To: Jeffrey <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2012 15:38:44 +0000 Normal Clearance Procedure when shipping a car from USA to France: a) Custom Duty 10% on value of car b) VAT 19.6% on value of car Both of these taxes are collected at port of entry by the French Customs and Excise Service After clearing customs you will be handed a copy of the import declaration, a receipt, as wells as a customs entry certificate Once the vehicle has been cleared through Customs you are under strict obligation to apply for registration under a French domestic license plate. This must be completed within 4 months of importing the vehicle into France. The vehicle must conform to French safety and environment standards checked by the local DRIRE. Almost all vehicles purchased outside France are not manufactured to comply with French Standards and will require modifications. We will have to check with Car Manufacturer before shipping to understand nonconforming items. Nonconforming vehicles must be exported after the expiration of the 4 month time limit as they cannot be driven in France with foreign license plates. There are two EXCEPTIONS to the above rules for paying taxes: I) if you move house to France on a permanent basis (as distinct from a seasonal resident) and you had been living outside the EU for the last 12 months prior to your arrival in (or return to) France.
