KEY BLOCK----- *National* -- Coverage of Barney Frank Politico article suggesting that progressive democrats should get behind HRC early rather than Bernie Sanders because a long primary campaign will only erode the benefit Democrats are now poised to reap from the Republicans’ free for all. Frank writes that he is convinced that a prolonged pre-nomination debate about the authenticity of HRC’s support for progressive policy stances will do more harm than good. Chris Matthews notes that HRC leads Bernie Sanders by 49 points in a national poll. Frank joins the show to discuss his article. Frank says HRC has taken very strong progressive positions and he is afraid there are people who are going to say that HRC is only doing it because Sanders pushed her to, which he says is inaccurate, but that doesn’t mean people won’t believe it. Says Republicans are boosting Bernie Sanders in a fight against HRC. Frank says we know Republicans are going to greatly outspend us and it’s not smart to force HRC into an expensive primary. Highlights that HRC was a big liberal in the Clinton administration. Zerlina Maxwell comments saying HRC does well at small face-to-face events with voters and that’s very important in Iowa. Says HRC came in third in Iowa last time so she sees Iowa as a challenge but one she is willing to tackle, which we can see by her going back again and again. Adolfo Franco weighs in saying HRC has more to worry about with Bernie Sanders than Republicans do with Donald Trump since HRC is not likeable. Says a majority of voters in Iowa, Virginia, and Colorado do not see HRC as honest or trustworthy. Mary Kissel weighs in saying the more you see HRC the less you like her and she is scandal-ridden. Dorothy Rabinowitz says HRC does not have political skills and no one likes to listen to her speak. Jason Riley says the concern is that the scandal will only rise with HRC. Kissel says HRC can’t maintain the bunker-like campaign forever. Riley says the Democratic party is of two minds about HRC. The establishment wants to rally around her while the grassroots are looking for an alternative. Says that within a day’s time, both of them as well as HRC went back and made choices that were more in line with what the movement was asking for. Says at this point they want to see a real racial action agenda. Says they want candidates to call movement leaders and have a conversation to build a full-fledged platform that is about dealing with communities devastated by police brutality and mass incarceration. Shows clip of HRC saying she never sent or received classified information at the time it was sent or received and what you’re seeing a typical discussion among various parts of the government about what should be revealed. Shows clip of HRC saying she never sent or received classified information at the time it was sent or received and there has been a lot of confusion. Reporter notes that the State Department did not mark the information as classified, but other panelist counters that as Secretary of State, HRC should have known which information was sensitive. Panel says HRC had the new conference in March and said there was no classified information, but now we are finding out there was. Says inspector general reports are supposed to be private, but somehow we have the information. Shows quote from Michael Goodwin speculating that Valerie Jarrett was the leak. Says where this controversy hurts her is that she is trying to talk policy and all the media is focusing on is the issue of her character. Says this is something that is going to hound her campaign through the primary. Jason Johnson says this isn’t going to be a big deal for HRC because you would have to tell voters why this is an issue. Says her appeal has never been honestly, but her leadership ability, and those numbers are still very high. Charlie Gasparino says Larry Fink is the one who gave HRC these ideas about short term investing. Host talks about HRC’s honesty and trustworthiness numbers and how the email controversy is going to impact those numbers. Lisa Lerer weighs in saying HRC’s campaign says it will only reinforce people who already dislike her and will never work for her, but Lerer says the danger is it sets an early narrative like we saw happen to Mitt Romney. Notes that every month there’s going to be another court-mandated spate of stories which is bad for her. Shows clip of HRC saying she is confident that she never sent or received any classified information and it’s all about her desire to have transparency. Maeve Reston says every candidate at some point deals with some kind of investigation. Nia-Malika Henderson says HRC’s campaign framed it in such a way that the New York Times is attacking them. Says they are tapping into the idea that voters don’t trust politicians. Robert Costa says whenever an HRC issue emerges, we always frame it in terms of the general, but it could be important for the primary as well. Lerer says there are advantages to having a competitive primary versus a coronation. Discussion moves to the Black Lives Matter movement and Henderson says HRC is taking a different strategy to WJC who in 1992 said he wouldn’t be beholden to the African American community. Says that the inspector generals’ report says that the information found in her emails was deemed classified at the time, not later has HRC has claimed. Says it is essentially about trust and we have seen that HRC’s trust numbers are already low. Highlights Quinnipiac poll results. Says if he were Joe Biden, he would be looking about that and thinking about joining the race. Says the New York Times really screwed up and it’s the second time they’ve done that with one of these stories. Says the facts are that there was never a request for a criminal investigation and any classified information that was sent from HRC’s private server was received by her unlabeled as classified. Says there is no story there other than the most prominent newspaper in the country really messing up. Dean wants to know why they screwed up. Says this is the second time and thinks it’s a serious matter that they better get to the bottom of. Shows clip of HRC saying what we’re seeing here is people looking back and saying there should have been issues identified with four or fewer emails. Alex Witt counters that those four emails came from a sample of only 40 emails. Dean says what we know for sure is that none of the emails were labeled classified, so there is no story. Dean says he doesn’t know anything about the server or what’s on it, says it could be problematic to have someone’s entire server be looked at by the opposition, but there is no evidence that HRC has done anything wrong whatsoever. Says this is exactly what happened when incorrect reports about Clinton Foundation donors. Says Beghazi has been so beaten to death that every time you say it it reminds the country that the MO of Republicans is to obstruct. Says there is no downside to a public hearing, which he says she was right to insist on. Dean comments on Quinnipiac polls and says these polls don’t matter for another year.
