Performances of Stravinsky have been among the highlights of the Rattle
era with the Berliner Philharmoniker. In this concert Sir Simon presents the
ballet Petrushka. This tragic love story of a puppet brought to life combines
the nostalgic atmosphere of a Russian fair with an innovative musical
language. Rachmaninov's late-Romantically tinged Third Symphony and the
premiere of a short work by Unsuk Chin complete the programme.

To set the mood for the broadcast, here is an excerpt from the rehearsals (Photo: Harald Hoffmann)
Before the Berliner Philharmoniker travel to Asia for the last time under the
direction of Simon Rattle, they present their tour programme in Berlin. In
addition to sonorous works by Brahms and Strauss, the concert includes
Ravel's G major Piano Concerto, with its shifts between enchanting delicacy
and jazz-influenced fervour. Standing in for an unfortunately indisposed
Lang Lang, the evening's soloist is the Korean rising star Seong-Jin Cho,
winner of the legendary Chopin competition in Warsaw in 2015.

NEW IN THE ARCHIVE: YANNICK NEZET-SEGUIN CONDUCTS
BRAHMS'S "DEUTSCHES REQUIEM*
(Photo: Hans von der Woerd)
Johannes Brahms, composer of the Deutsches Requiem which Yannick
Nezet-Seguin conducted for the first time at the age of 22, is closer to the
conductor's heart than almost any other composer. In a reading which has
been refined over many performances, the chief conductor designate of the
Metropolitan Opera in New York has now presented Brahms's unorthodox
requiem, which conveys both grief and consolation in a unique manner, with
the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Rundfunkchor Berlin and the soloists
Hanna-Elisabeth Muller and Markus Werba. The concert opened with a
fascinating discovery: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's short, extraordinarily
exquisite cantata "Heilig".

A NEW PHOTO BOOK PORTRAYS THE BERLINER PHILHARMONIKER
DURING THE RATTLE ERA
Life as a Berliner Philharmoniker is full of memorable moments — during a
concert, backstage, and on tour. The photographer Monika Rittershaus has
accompanied the orchestra and its chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle over
many years and captured many such special moments. Her photos now
appear in an extensive, elegantly produced book entitled moving music.
