One of the hottest growing areas on the Internet is not gaming, sports or viral kitty gaffs, but academic video content, especially in the sciences. In fact, the number of subscribers to educational YouTube channels tripled in 2013, with popular science topics leading the pack. Producers like AsapScience, or TED can get up to 10 million viewers over the course of a month. Missing on TV and online however, is in-depth academic video content, especially in the sciences, despite booming viewership for the small number of brainiac programs. Now an unusual Harvard investor and private financier, called Jeffrey Epstein, has helped fund and launch NeuroTV, the largest online network devoted to monthly academic interviews on the brain and everything neuroscience. NeuroTV's guest speakers are not run of the mill professors. Two recent guests, May-Britt and Edvard Moser, both professors and directors of the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Other recent guests include: Hank Greely, Director of the Center for Law and the Biosciences and Professor of Genetics, at the Stanford School of Medicine, Michael Platt, Director of the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and Sebastian Seung Professor of Computational Neuroscience at MIT. "NeuroTV provides one of the first in-depth interview models, going rigorously into the science topic," Jeffrey Epstein asserted whose foundation, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation, established the graduate Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University in 2003 with a $30 million dollar gift. "The episodes don't tone down the academic language, thus providing video content that can be used in classrooms around the world as well as a platform to educate and inspire." In addition to establishing the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics, which studies the mathematics of evolution with a focus on diseases such as cancer and HIV, Epstein was a former board member of Harvard's Mind, Brain and Behavior Committee and has funded numerous brain research initiatives at the university. The US Virgin Islands lags far behind most US states, if not the world, in many basic statistics, including poverty rates of 29% and one of the highest death rates at 31 per 100,000 capita. Education over the last ten years however, has been flourishing throughout the USVI with literacy of 15 year olds up to 90% -95%. Leading this effort, has been an obscure New York City fund manager and a substantial investor in Harvard University called Jeffrey Epstein. Epstein's foundation, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation is based in St. Thomas in the USVI and in addition EFTA01202991 to sponsoring youth and education programs throughout the islands, it recently funded their largest STEM science fair to date, bringing hundreds of USVI students to showcase their work in St. Thomas. The fair, called the St. Thomas-St. John STEM Fair, was organized by the Virgin Islands Department of Education and held at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center. STEM stands for Science, Math, Engineering and Technology, and the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation under its corporate umbrella, the Southern Trust Company, played a key role in sponsoring the event. Specifically, the foundation supplied more than a hundred Microsoft Surface 2 computers, Touch keyboards and Nylon Sleeves for Microsoft Surface. The foundation also provided funds to host the STEM Fair, and travel and accommodations funds for the winners and chaperones to attend the STEM summer camps. "The STEM fairs are not just about awarding students for their impressive work," Jeffrey Epstein commented. "They offer an exciting and needed incentive for students across the Virgin Islands to participate in science projects at school and at home." The caliber of the 165 projects at the STEM fair were astounding. One I I year old prize winner, Ricky James Jr., showed how to power a calculator with a penny instead of batteries. Other projects included a solar powered speed boat and a juicer made from a garbage door motor and recycled dishwasher parts. The top scorers in each category were given a trophy, a STEM plaque, certificate and an iPad. Categories ranged from science research, demonstrations, math real world problem investigations, math real world models, music technology and software programming. In addition to supporting the Virgin Islands Department of Education and youth organizations in the USVI, the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation supports cutting edge science research in the United States and established the Program of Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University, a graduate department that studies the mathematics of evolution with a focus on disease and cancer.
