Building upon decades of hard work between our two nations -- and millions of people to people ties -- we have had a transformative year in US/India relations, further broadening and deepening our partnership in so many areas. It was also a year of firsts and many high points. President Obama was the first US President to be the Chief Guest for India's Republic Day ceremonies in January. Months later, Secretary of Defense Carter was the first Defense Secretary to visit an Indian military command. And, recently, Indian Minister of Defense Parrikar was the first Indian Defense Minister to visit Pacific Command, and then land on a US aircraft carrier (the USS Eisenhower) to witness flight operations. We held the first-ever Strategic and Commercial Dialogue, merging our commercial and strategic issues to help power the growth of both of our countries. We established secure lines between our two National Security Advisors, and between the President and Prime Minister, so that important, time sensitive issues could be tackled directly by our leaders. We launched a trilateral ministerial dialogue between Japan, India and the United States, and we entered into a Joint Strategic Vision for cooperation across the Asia Pacific with India - solidifying our joint commitment to uphold the rules-based order across the Indo-Pacific. We've moved beyond a buyer/seller relationship in our defense relationship to one of joint production and co-development. Our military forces continued to train at a very high level, further integrating our understanding of how we would each employ force and operate in contested environments. We called upon India for help to evacuate U.S. nationals from Yemen, and we worked together with India and others to help the people of Nepal after a devastating earthquake. We elevated our strategic partnership to "strategic plus" - signifying that we work together at a much higher level, in more places, and on more different subjects. We exceeded all previous records in two-way trade and foreign direct investments, totaling over $102 billion. Indian companies invested some $11 billion in the US, while US investments in India topped $28 billion. We processed the highest number of visas ever - over 1 million. And more Indian students - over 130,000 -- studied in the US than ever before. In so many other areas we pushed our cooperation to new heights, bringing together our best experts in health, science, space and innovation. We launched major new initiatives in global health security, tuberculosis, and joint cancer research. We created a new Innovation Forum to build upon the Prime Minister's successful visit to Silicon Valley, and help leverage the use of technology in a wide range of areas, including building new smart cities and modern infrastructure. And, of course, on the climate and clean energy front, the US and India played a leadership role in constructing and finalizing a historic agreement to combat climate change. We also rolled-out a major new initiative to double our clean energy R&D spending, and we were proud to support India's new solar alliance to fully realize the potential of solar energy. Energy will continue to be one of our biggest areas of cooperation, especially as we move toward implementation of the civil nuclear agreement in the New Year. As we move into 2016, we do so with optimism and an ambitious agenda for the future. While we are proud of our accomplishments, we know there is much more we can do together.
