*sorry* typo budget is $35K.
we're done for this year and won't get back to work till spring (for the summer session) next
year.
we've been pretty unorganized in the overall administrative structure but tried hard to make
stuff useful for the girls. we have been slow to add an adminsitrative layer because then
we'd need to use resources to keep them all going. it's easy to add layers like that but hard
to take them away.
i spend quite a lot of time mentoring young girls - primarily at seattle girls school which
is an interesting mix of super poor and super rich (rich subsidize tuition for poor). there
are also some stong prep schools (like lakeside where bill g went to school, their endowment
is enormous)•
the ones who get the most out of it tend to have fewer opportunities, work harder, are more
competitive and generally minorities. rich non-minority girls have tended to be more
motivated by the attention they receive for the work than by actually caring about the work.
every kid should see at least one neurosurgery. i think it changes their life! keep it in
mind. when we get back to work on it i will be back in touch about it. such small numbers,
I'd like to kjeep it that way and make it super exclusive. since we are limiting to high
school girls, we can only pool from local places. if we made a decision to expand to
undergrad, it would be a bigger commitment. not sure i can do that with all of my other
"jobs".

By the way, my department (neurosurgery) has a summer camp for high school girls
where we
pick 5 of the smartest high school girls from the region - take them to the OR and
make
them work on a lab-based project. Some are bench, some are computer, some are
clinical. For
the past few years, all of the girls have published at least one peer-reviewed paper
and
every single one of them has aced the SAT and gotten into their first choice college.
I'm
hoping they will all be neurosurgeons but I suspect most will do hard science or
something
else.
It's pretty cheap to run but I want to expand it to 8 girls and pay for a few field
visits
for them (around town) and maybe even invite a Nobel laureate or two to come visit
them.
So if you are still giving out money for science (this is girl's science) let me
know? I
put in $15K of my own salary and the foundation matches some of it. Budget is now
about
$75K annually that my chairman and I have a small grant for but pls consider this one

in
your lineup. OK? It's at the University so charitable, etc. Plus the girls are super
smart.
