** TV's moment to start over
------------------------------------------------------------
The broadcast TV upfronts are weird and ritualistic but there's also something beautifully optimistic about them. No matter how lousy the last season was... No matter how many shows were cancelled... No matter what the execs promised last time... The upfronts are the opportunity to start over. Wipe the slate clean, forget everything that failed, look to the future, and dream about that next huge "Empire"-sized hit. Every corner of the media biz could use an annual cleanse.
The fun will begin at 11am Monday with NBC's presentation at Radio City Music Hall... Then Fox in the afternoon... ESPN and ABC on Tuesday... CBS and Turner (save me a drink!) on Wednesday... The CW on Thursday... And other events in between. Expect to hear a lot about new TV shows and even more about data, ad innovation and new forms of distribution. We'll link you to all the best coverage all week along...
-- If you're outside the TV orbit, this "what are the upfronts" explainer (http://www.ibtimes.com/what-are-upfronts-biggest-week-tv-aims-lock-billions-advertising-dollars-2368785?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) by Oriana Schwindt is excellent... (http://www.ibtimes.com/what-are-upfronts-biggest-week-tv-aims-lock-billions-advertising-dollars-2368785?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
"Wind at their backs"
What's the big picture storyline of upfront week? This: Despite all of the pressures and pain points of the TV biz, "executives feel wind at their backs," Brian Steinberg writes (http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/2016-tv-upfront-advertising-empire-thursday-night-football-1201774396/?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) . Example: Two weeks ago Les Moonves told Wall Street that "we are salivating" for upfront sales to start.
While web video giants have been trying to chip away at TV's ad $$ dominance, Big TV has been making a strong counterargument. Steinberg: (http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/2016-tv-upfront-advertising-empire-thursday-night-football-1201774396/?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "Advertisers are sick of paying for 'traffic' jimmied by click tricks and pre-roll ads no one watches. They worry ad blocking software might do for the desktop and smartphone what the DVR did to TV. And they notice that companies once thought of as old-school – like Fox or NBCUniversal – are suddenly getting more digitally savvy, all the while maintaining a better quality of video content." Jim Rutenberg elaborates in his Monday NYT column... (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/16/business/media/when-tv-ads-go-subliminal-with-a-vengeance-well-be-to-blame.html?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
"Apprentice" won't return til January
NBC lifted the curtain on its fall schedule today. (https://www.tvguide.com/news/nbc-fall-tv-schedule-2016/?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) We found out that by the time "The New Celebrity Apprentice" returns to the network, Donald Trump will either be the president-elect or "The Biggest Loser." His successor Arnold Schwarzenegger taped the new season this spring but it "won’t air this fall, as it's being held to air between seasons of 'The Voice,'" Andy Dehnart notes. (http://www.realityblurred.com/realitytv/2016/05/arnold-schwarzenegger-apprentice-january-2017/?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "Instead, it will air on Monday nights in January." BTW, the word "NEW" has been added to the show's title...
KTLA going viral
I think we're going to be seeing a lot of this story (https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/theyre-getting-more-emails-now?bftw&utm_term=.xsmNdynGg&mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]#.lcxxm6K5b) on the morning shows. "KTLA anchor Chris Burrous publicly apologized after a clip of him handing meteorologist Liberté Chan a sweater while she was doing a live weather report drew criticism from people on social media."BuzzFeed has the perfect explainer of what happened + all the reactions... (https://www.buzzfeed.com/emaoconnor/theyre-getting-more-emails-now?bftw&utm_term=.xsmNdynGg&mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]#.lcxxm6K5b)
Who's going to Zuckerberg's meeting
On Wednesday at Facebook HQ, Mark Zuckerberg is holding the first in a series of meetings with prominent conservatives about the "trending" stories controversy and what the company needs to do to gain/regain trust. Today we started to find out who's going: Glenn Beck (who wrote about it on Facebook), Fox's Dana Perino, CNN's SE Cupp, Arthur Brooks of the American Enterprise Institute, and Zac Moffatt, Mitt Romney's former digital director. More names TKTK.

Mark Cuban turns down #NeverTrump
No doubt, some of the periodic buzz about "Mark Cuban running for president" is beneficial for Cuban's brand. But there's something real about it too... Anti-Trump conservative leaders recently reached out to Cuban (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/14/media/mark-cuban-donald-trump-president/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) as part of the ongoing effort to recruit a third party candidate. "It would have been fun to run against Donald," Cuban told me, (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/14/media/mark-cuban-donald-trump-president/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) but he believes it's "too late" to mount a bid.
He says "my conversations with them were minimal," and he wouldn't name the callers. But he added... In "never say never" fashion... "I think the time is right for a technology literate entrepreneur to run for president." Here's my story... (http://money.cnn.com/2016/05/14/media/mark-cuban-donald-trump-president/index.html?iid=SF_LN&mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
Why Cuban wishes he "could have pulled this off"
Right after we talked about Cuban on this morning's "Reliable Sources," he emailed to follow up:
"I have had sitting politicians on both sides of the aisle and some folks in the White House (who of course will be looking for jobs) reach out to offer support. Doesn't change anything of course, but I think the one role I could have played as a third party candidate was to be the 'straw man' on issues. It would be near impossible to win, but as a third candidate I could drive substantial discussion on material issues. That isn't happening and it's uncertain if Trump will let it happen. Driving discussion would have been an important role and it's the primary reason I wish I could have pulled this off."

Road to 2016
Larry King on his "friend" Trump
I hosted this morning's "Reliable Sources" from CNN's studio on Sunset Boulevard in L.A., a/k/a Larry King's former digs, and he stopped byfor an interview about all things Trump. (http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2016/05/15/larry-king-on-trump-and-electoral-dysfunction.cnn?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) A few highlights:
-- On the fake spokesman story: "It's kind of weird, isn't it? Why would he need to do that? I'll have to ask him about it."
-- On Trump's tight-knit relationships with media figures: "I talk to Donald a lot. I like him a lot personally. He's been a friend for years. He's been good to my family."
-- The Clinton-Trump debates in the fall "ought to be on pay TV."
"The ultimate reality show"
Are TV networks and web sites essentially "producing" Trump's new "reality show" for him? Trump aide Paul Manafort, after all, said the presidential election is the "ultimate reality show." We talked about that at the top of today's show with Dylan Byers, Brian Lowry and Jeff Greenfield. Brian said "When the campaign is being conducted very much like a reality show, it's not surprising or necessarily inappropriate that it would be covered that way." Dylan noted that Trump is running more of a "media campaign" than a "political campaign." Watch our conversation here… (http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2016/05/15/media-producing-trumps-new-reality-show.cnn?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
-- Jeff Greenfield asks the big Q: (http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2016/05/15/trump-winning-or-losing-the-daily-news-cycle.cnn?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) Have "all of the assumptions people like me have made about this process somehow been rendered inoperative?" v

No? Not yet? ;-)
Facebook facing criticism
A "turning point"
"For Facebook, this is a turning point," Poynter's Kelly McBridehttp://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2016/05/15/facebooks-news-power-and-new-responsibilities.cnnsaid on today's show, (http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2016/05/15/facebooks-news-power-and-new-responsibilities.cnn?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) "because they're asking themselves questions as a company about what their responsibilities are." She said the past week was "the most transparent I’ve ever seen Facebook about any of their policies, and it was really good first step..."
And yet... MZ Hemingway said... Gizmodo's original report about conservative stories being suppressed "confirmed the suspicions that so many conservatives and conservative media outlets have had."She agreed that "we need to see much more transparency..." (http://www.cnn.com/videos/tv/2016/05/15/facebooks-news-power-and-new-responsibilities.cnn?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID])
How many curators?
NYT's John Herrman asked, (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/16/technology/social-media-finds-new-roles-as-news-and-entertainment-curators.html?mc_cid=eef5265156&mc_eid=[UNIQID]) and "Facebook declined to say how many people have editorial roles, as did Instagram, which Facebook owns." Among those vying for the company is the unusual combination of the investor Warren E. Buffett and Dan Gilbert, the founder of Quicken Loans and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. That consortium is one of several suitors that have moved into the second round of bidding for Yahoo..."

The two are joined in the second round by a range of other bidders, including Verizon Communications and private equity firms such as TPG Capital and a group that comprises Bain Capital and Vista Equity Partners..."
