Public Corruption Unit Short Form Updates July 5, 2020 A. SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS IN CASES • In re Jeffrey Epstein, USAO 2018R01618 (AUSAs : On August 10, Epstein committed suicide at the MCC. The investigation into Epstein's co-conspirators continues. In particular, we have developed considerable evidence regarding the involvement of Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend, in grooming multiple underage victims for sexual abuse b Epstein in the 1990s and for participating in some of the abuse, as well as one of Epstein's , who participated in scheduling massages, setting up the massage room, photographing victims, and paying victims in the early to mid 2000's. On June 29, 2020 a grand July returned a six count indictment charging Maxwell for her role in facilitating Epstein's abuse of minor girls. Maxwell was arrested on July 2 at a residence in New Hampshire and has been detained since. She was transported by the USMS to New York and is currently at the MDC. On July I, we had an initial appearance and bail hearing before Judge Nathan, who heard a bail argument and granted our request to detain Maxwell pending trial, which has been scheduled for July 2021. The team is now working on making initial productions of discovery, with a deadline for initial productions of August 21.
