Rwanda Project ESSAY:
BY
When I was in sixth grade, a week before Thanksgiving, I set out on a mission to try and make
sure as many people as possible had a glorious Thanksgiving like I did every year. I was only twelve and
wasn't expected to accomplish much, but still my parents supported me. By the time Thanksgiving Day
rolled around my friend and I had collected twelve turkeys, over 100 pounds of vegetables.
and enough canned goods to fill my mom's Suzuki.
The day after Thanksgiving, my mom opened the newspaper to the Island Trader section and
fond a short unexpected story about how two twelve year old girls from Antilles School had made a
difference to families in need of a glorious Thanksgiving. It was written by the woman in charge of the
Red Cross at the time. The story hit on how it doesn't matter where you come from, how old you are, or
what you've been dealt with in life, but that what you do with your time is what counts. That now
weathered article is still tacked on my wall to this day, reminding me that the little things make a
difference.
From that moment onward I have been devoted to helping the St. Thomas community. One of
my most fulfilling accomplishments has been helping my community though In-service activities. Since
ninth grade I have served approximately 195 hours In activities ranging from painting a mural at the
Family Resource Center to reading Christmas stories to the elderly at a nursing home. (An especially
memorable event was helping rebuild a greenhouse for farmers on the west end of the island. A
nonprofit organization called We Grow Food Inc. and I, elped coordinate the
event.)
As I already stated, throughout my high school career I have performed almost 200 hours worth
of community service directed toward St.Thomas—and have loved every minute. Being given the chance
to traveling to Rwanda, however, seems like an ideal opportunity for me to strengthen my sense of a
world community. Already, with the help of others, I've been able to accomplish many things on this
island. Now, however, I feel it is the time to travel to a part of the world that I have yet to go and is in
need of help. The fact that children my age are suffering is an unfathomable thing to me and I can't
think of anything better to do with my time this summer, but to try and help them.
This is a once in a life time opportunity where I can make a difference in the world. One thing
I've learned while growing up in St. Thomas is that we are one and that it's the little things we do that
count. We live In a world today where two sixth graders can make a difference even though they aren't
expected to and a group of high school kids from the Virgin Islands can travel half way across the world
to help those In need. Opportunities like these let them be big or small, helps to define who we are as
people —I want to be defined as someone who cares and wants to help! If I were given the opportunity
to travel to Rwanda I know what I would be making a difference in people's lives; especially where a
difference is needed the most.

Re: Recommendation for
To Whom It May Concern:
It is a pleasure to write to you concemin a wonderful student who
would he an extraordinary addition to your prog . to write to you on her
behalf. since I have taught her two Advanced Placement courses in the last two years and know
her outside of school as well. A highlight was arescntation on Great Britain in AP
Comparative Government. tier PowerPoint presentation was diligently prepared and
incorporated the insight she had gained from the prior summer.
She clearly proved herself intellectually capable of grasping the college-level political theories
and concepts we studied in the course. More notably, she demonstrated outstanding leadership as
she balanced a clear sense of purpose with genuine concern for ensuring that her classmates also
understood the material.
The moot court competition I conducted in AP US Government and Politics is another
excellent example to showcase intellectual qualities and motivation for
independent academic course work. Due in part to my legal background, the students and I
really enjoyed role-playing a Supreme Court oral argument assignment was to
write an appellate brief and present an oral argument to a panel of three -judges" on Roper v.
Simmons. the issue was whether the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution
forbid imposition of the death penalty on offenders who were under the age of eighteen when
their crimes were committed. abrief was extremely well written. including case
citations to support all the important points. At the oral argument, she was poised, passionate and
persuasive as she responded knowledgably to the judges' questions and countered opponents'
arguments in rebuttal.
Finally. 1 know of no higher recommendation than the fact that 1 have entrusted
