::: ProgressNow - Building the online progressive movement state by state :::
Dear Friends,
Well, it seems all too easy to make a joke about what it's like
living in a binder -- referencing the astoundingly out of touch
comment made by Romney in his (failed) effort to appeal to working
women like me. It's that time of year, and having a good chuckle
seems appropriate.
In that vein, I'll share with you some of the great work my
colleagues are doing in their states, highlighting the dumb things
Senate candidates are up to in this election. Enjoy reading about the
"oil man" one candidate mistook for a supporter (he was an
actor) and the best-named-website-ever our Missouri affiliate put
together: DidToddAkinSaySomethingStupidToday.com. Then, do like we do:
after a quick laugh, get back to work - 20 days to go!

Best - and onward!

Massachusetts
ProgressMass has generated significant coverage in state and national
media around the the actions and positions of US Sen. Scott Brown.
ProgressMass is also working directly on message development and
dissemination with allied c3 and c4 voter contact efforts. Their reach
to opinion makers has increased exponentially since their launch at
the beginning of 2012. In a post-debate interview Oct.1 with Rachel
Maddow, Congressman Frank made a direct reference to our analysis of
Brown's support for filibusters, and told Rachel that he learned these
details from Gov. Dukakis! This report was cited earlier in the year
by the Warren Campaign, and was reported in The Boston Globe, The
Salem News, Rachel Maddow Blog, ThinkProgress and The Boston Herald.
The Huffington Post, and The Boston Globe cited their analysis of
Brown's press releases, reporting on the high percentage of attacks on
Warren. The Nation Magazine recently featured the letter of our
Massachusetts ED, Michael Fogelberg, calling for Brown to withdraw his
endorsement of Romney, after Romneys' "47%" remarks. Springfield WWLP
TV news broadcast the ProgressMass event at Brown headquarters linking
Brown to Romney, and his economic policies. A South Shore radio
station, WATD 630 AM, an important swing region, also reported from
the event's press release. Politico's Morning Score, has included a
number of our social media, and other output, most recently our video,
Bay State Birther.

Michigan
Progress Michigan launched an aggressive paid ad campaign on broadcast
television in two key media markets in August, revealing the "real"
Pete Hoekstra. The ad highlights Hoekstra's connections with
Washington lobbyists and support for a radical budget plan that will
"essentially end Medicare." The ad ran more than 1,000 times in both
the Lansing and Flint media markets. Press hits include: WJRT, WNEM,
and MIRS. The ad can be viewed at www.GetRealPeteHoekstra.com.

Missouri
Progress Missouri continues to be a thorn in Todd Akin's side, working
publicly and behind the scenes to raise public awareness of his latest
mind-blowing positions on magic uterus powers, bestiality, eliminating
the minimum wage or repealing equal pay laws (and that's just for
October!).
Todd Akin is now a household name and national punchline because
American Bridge and Progress Missouri immediately worked together to
swiftly and effectively ignite a firestorm around the Congressman's
"legitimate rape" theories. Progress Missouri also played a key role
in defining and introducing Todd Akin to Missouri voters, long before
any of the political class believed he could win his GOP primary (when
he declared, "the heart of liberalism really is a hatred for God").
Our AskToddAkin.com project drew attention to the Congressman's
extreme voting record during the primary campaign, and has continued
to serve as a resource during the general election fight. Recently,
when the Akin campaign launched their "Common Sense Bus Tour,"
Progress Missouri worked with in-state partners to flip the script,
re-dubbing it the "Nonsense Bus Tour." Our protesters outnumbered Akin
supporters at most stops, and outraged opposition voices were included
in almost every local and national news story. As if that is not
enough, check out their fun tool for Missouri political reporters

Nevada
ProgressNow Nevada been bird-dogging U.S. Senate candidate Dean Heller
with a comic dressed like an Oil Man who thanks Sen. Heller for the
Big Oil subsidies. Oil Man actually met Heller at one such event and
Heller was "pleased to meet him." Moreover, ProgressNow Nevada flew a
plane banner outside the big UNLV-Nevada football rivalry targeting
Dean Heller for voting to reduce Pell Grants. As the plane flew over
the tailgating, Heller was making his rounds and we captured him in a
video with the plane overhead (which can be seen HERE).

New Mexico
ProgressNowNM scored an early research hit against Republican US
Senate candidate Heather Wilson (former board member of Karl Rove's
Crossroads GPS) when they released documents showing Wilson had been
named in a pay-to-play investigation by New Mexico's Attorney General.
ProgressNowNM launched WilsonWatch.org, an online research site full
of her previous voting records, finance statements and statements to
give the public and press a one-stop shop for all things Wilson. They
have also teamed up with national and in-state environmental partners
to highlight Wilson's horrible environmental record by flying planes
with lighted messages over the state's rivalry college football game,
tracking Wilson and doing impromptu bird dogging of the candidate at
public events. As other organizations have moved onto other races,
ProgressNowNM is the only group currently tracking Wilson. Wilson's
50/50 June polling position has been cut to 48/39.

Ohio
ProgressOhio is utilizing a multi-faceted strategy to engage, educate
and empower voters across Ohio on the vitally important U.S. Senate
race between Sherrod Brown and Josh Mandel. In partnership with SEIU,
they are conducting a door-to-door canvass in the Cleveland
metropolitan area (coordinating 35-40 canvassers working for the past
three weeks, and plan to surge to 100+ canvassers for the final 10-day
push) - so far averaging over 1,000 contacts and IDs each day.
Additionally, ProgressOhio is working with the group Black Men Vote to
support a Somali community GOTV program, where they were able to
recruit over 20 canvassers and field organizers working with their
contacts to educate them on the candidates, assist with absentee
ballot applications and get voters to the polls. On the lighter side
we are waiting on final approval from Apple on the
"Jumpin' Josh" app for iPhones & iPads. It is an
interactive game that illustrates Mandel's propensity to jump
from one position to the next. We're also parodying Mandel with
"Joshy Shore", a standalone website specifically aimed at
men between the ages of 21 and 30.

Texas
Progress Texas has exposed Ted Cruz as a Tea Party extremist, focusing
on his wild theories on fringe issues. Their efforts have included
creating social media campaigns using a "Deep Thoughts With Ted Cruz"
theme that highlights his conspiracy theories about the United
Nations, his belief that emergency room care is cheaper than
preventative health care, and that the government is keeping us from
buying toilets that flush. Immediately after he secured the nomination
and before he spoke at the national convention, Progress Texas did
statewide media blitz to show how Cruz plans for the failure of Texas
through medicaid cuts, a push to privatize Social Security and other
failed Bush policies. Additionally, Progress Texas has recorded video
of his worse remarks during the general election Senate debates - for
use in the current and future elections - and has been working to get
Cruz on the record on major campaigns we are running; such as their
aggressive campaign to fill federal judicial vacancies.
Wisconsin
One Wisconsin Now has done both research and issue advocacy
surrounding issues related to the U.S. Senate. Among its specific
recent hits were obtaining former Gov. Tommy Thompson's state
taxes and circulating a comprehensive memo to the media about the
contradictions and inconsistencies of Tommy's claim to
"have never left Wisconsin," and his apparently use of
dual-statehood in the filing of taxes. In addition, One Wisconsin Now
reminded people across Wisconsin that we currently have one
out-of-touch, ideologically extreme U.S. Senator in freshman Ron
Johnson - who's foibles and misstatements are now
cataloged in the interactive One Wisconsin Now website
www.OurDumbSenator.com.
