Jeffrey, Julie Simon was Rachel's Admissions Counselor. Julie's official title is: Assistant Director of Out of State Recruitment and Alumni Relations at the University of Michigan. Julie Simon Assistant Director University of Michigan I Office of Undergraduate Admissions 515 E. Jefferson 1 1220 Student Activities Building 1 11.11 1tF The Principal of Syosset High School ( Dr. Durante) had called Julie approximately about three weeks ago and left a message on her answering machine, explaining that he is not accustomed to calling a College for a student, but that he was compelled to make an exception in Rachel's case. Aside from being accepted to the University of Wisconsin and Tulane University amongst others, Rachel has been accepted into Syracuse Universities prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications which received 5,O00 applications this year and admitted only 320 students. Rachel being one of them! Below is an email that Rachel sent to Julie in February: On Mon, Feb 3, 2014 at 9:54 AM, Rachel Roth wrote: Good morning Julie, EFTA_R1_00373587 EFTA01926861 Upon receiving a deferral letter from UM in December, most applicants would have moved on and set their sights on another university. Unlike my peers, my desire has not been swayed. Although opening my email to a deferral was not ideal, my vision of my future in Ann Arbor remains unchanged. Since the end of my sophomore year, the University of Michigan has, and will remain, my lop choice". I'm writing to inform you that, given the opportunity to attend your institution, I will absolutely attend under any circumstances. I'm aware that UM offers the Summer Bridge Program, and if accepted with this agenda in mind, I would take advantage of the extra time to begin my studies at Michigan. Frankly put, I can't imagine a better college experience than on the beautiful, snowy, Michigan campus. Since you last reviewed my application, I have been extremely busy, both within my school and within my community. I have successfully maintained strong marks in my AP-filled curriculum, and I'm most proud of the grades that I have earned in the classes that don't typically come easily to me. (I worked countless hours to achieve the A in AP Calculus!) Included in my application folder are articles that I have written as a community contributor for a local magazine, The SyossetiWoodbury Magazine. Since I applied to the University of Michigan in September, I've had six articles published, with topics ranging from teen responsibility to daily life in the high school. I'm proud to have recently been nominated by the fashion club to be on the board of the annual fashion show. I spend approximately 9 hours a week organizing details and sitting in board meetings for the show. I'm excited to watch my vision and hard work come to life on April 3f0, as my peers and I strut down the runway to raise money for the charity Relay For Life! My own non-profit organization, Inspire Bright, is planning a multitude of fundraisers in order to bring a texting and driving program, the "Arrive Alive Tour" to my high school. Syosset is providing this experience during the day for the 10th grade only, but Inspire Bright is funding for it to stay the entire afternoon for all upperclassmen. As a new driver, texting and driving is a danger that I've teamed about since my first hour in driver's education. Although I've had it instilled in my head that texting and driving is never safe, others may not have had the same lesson. The Arrive Alive Tour uses a car simulator to show students the real harms of texting and driving, and vividly demonstrates the impact that sending one text can have. Hopefully upon a second glance at my application, and after reading of my new achievements, the admissions board will allow me the honor of becoming a Wolverine. Warmest wishes to you in the chilly Ann Arbor weather, Rachel Roth EFTA_R1_00373588 EFTA01926862 P.S.- I am planning on visiting UM again the weekend of February 14th, and would love to meet with you if you are available! Jeffrey, I know that I may be reaching, but there is another Rachel Roth" (from New Jersey) that was accepted. Although the administrative staff 'should be" using the students UM ID No., is there any chance that any part of "rat" Rachel's transcripts, letters of recommendation, etc. were placed in the wrong file under the "other Rachel Roth"?
