Dear Lindy:
I am writing out of professional courtesy, and out of a sense of concern regarding the what is effectively the
erasure of the Origins Project, and with it all the resources that scores of scientists had contributed to
developing over the years for the use of teachers, students, and the general public that occurred when Origins
transitioned into your Interplanetary Initiative. I have read the ASUNow announcement, and while I certainly
understand and applaud your desire to utilize and promote the skill set developed by Origins staff to help
promote your Interplanetary Initiative in new ways, that does not require erasing all evidence of the Origins
project, its contributions, and its mission. As it has been handled, the process has been unfair to Origins
participants, donors, and members of the general public, and goes against what should be the University's
commitment to knowledge and education.
I respectfully request that:
(a) The Origins web site, with all its resources and links, be restored for the benefit of those individuals who
use the site, and in honor of all the people who contributed time and scholarship to the program.
(b) Those who have donated to Origins be informed that their funds are now being used to support the
Interplanetary Initiative and that they be given the option of moving those funds to other programs that may
better reflect their interests.
(c) Many people on the Origins emailing list have been writing to me out of confusion, as they are now
receiving Interplanetary Initiative emails. Once again, I think it would be a ethical to send a mailing to all
those on the Origins mailing list explaining that since Origins is now terminated, they will be receiving emails
and announcements from the Interplanetary Initiative unless they choose to opt out of receiving such emails,
and then giving them an option to opt out.
(d) The Origins Postdoctoral Prize Lectureship was funded by a donor who wanted to support the Origins
mission. While I am very happy that the individual who the Origins Project committee and I selected for the
Origins Postdoctoral Prize in February will in fact be giving a lecture this fall, this lecture should be called the
Origins Postdoctoral Prize Lecture, because that is what it is, and that was what the award was given for. If
you decide to raise and/or devote funds from your initiative for a new lectureship after this, then it would be
appropriate to rename future lectures.
Thanks for your attention to these concerns.
