The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has just confirmed it’s linkage to microcephaly, <http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/02/10/cdc-confirms-link-between-zika-microcephaly-brazilian-babies-who-died/80179898/> a birth defect where babies are born with too-small heads and often experience developmental delays. And sadly, so far, 60 pregnant women on the island have been infected. My heart breaks for them, and for the thousands of mothers around the world who have already learned that their children have microcephaly. I can hardly imagine the fear and uncertainty that comes with such a diagnosis. Fortunately, the CDC is taking this threat seriously. It has been working closely with Puerto Rico, and is increasing lab capacity and testing, and outreach efforts on the island. But I want to be sure that we are truly doing all we can to fight the Zika virus from spreading. That’s why I’m sending two of my Senior Advisors to travel to Puerto Rico on a fact-finding mission to learn more about how Zika is impacting the island, and to determine what more we can do to assist Puerto Rico in responding to this health crisis. Even as we continue learning more about this disease, we must not delay in developing a rapid diagnostic test for Zika; a vaccine; and treatment. We should also step up mosquito control and abatement, and make sure everyone in Puerto Rico knows how to protect themselves and their kids. But we cannot do these things without more resources. In February, President Obama announced that he would re-direct some of the funds that had been previously allocated to fight Ebola. This is an important first step, but Congress must go further and allocate the full $1.8 billion that President Obama has requested in emergency funds to fight this deadly virus. Of course, the Zika crisis in Puerto Rico is compounded by broader problems in the health sector.
