Summary of Event:
Governor Kasich participated in a town hall moderated by The Commonwealth Club - he was asked about the middle class, education, economy, debt, health care, LGBT issues, banking, cyber security, Planned Parenthood, Social Security, Syria, trade, environment, and criminal justice reform.
Key points:
0:00 Kasich being introduced
1:43 Kasich entering - being introduced by moderator
2:50 question on this election season being different - Kasich: people are angry, they’re worried about their jobs, wages, their kids’ future - I got upset today - I read that congress can’t figure out how to provide money for zika vaccine - can’t they do anything - problem is we don’t have leadership that is pulling people together - it can be fixed - you can run an election by doubling down on how bad everything is with no answers and say we’re a bunch of losers? Where would you rather live? We’re forerunners in progress
4:51 we’re not trying to steal other people’s stuff, they’re trying to steal ours - or we can acknowledge we have challenges and give rational solutions - it’s about leaders at the top being able to address these economic issues with common sense solutions like balanced budgets, lower regulations and taxes - we have a problem with drugs in San Francisco - who are you waiting on to fix it - you have a problem with education - what are you waiting on? On me? You think i’m going to fix it? I will turn 104 federal programs back to the states what’s the big deal? That’s not going to give you something you don’t have now - people think they can’t fix things - they figure they give money to people to fix them
6:51 spirit of country rests in our neighborhoods - we have to pick up baton and run with it - we have to change the world in whatever way we can - we’re waiting for government to do it and it’ll never get done, the spirit is in us - i wrote a book about the grand slam mentality - if i can’t hit a homerun i might as well not bad but every single matters, everything we can do to live a life bigger than ourselves matters - i was in the airport and 2 guys wanted to take a picture, asked them what they did - they flew a boy in to get cancer treatment - not getting paid - are those 2 guys changing the world? Of course they are - why don’t we figure out the part of the world we can change - if we all do it together we’ll see a better place
9:09 what has OH done well in your time as governor? Kasich: everything we do is scalable - we’ve diversified and privatized economic development - this is 21st century - [takes phone] this is the world today - this is a prop, get with the program Corey [moderator] - we buy on this, we hear about self-driving cars - we’re going to have flying cars - everything is moving at speed of light except education and govt
11:23 govt doesn’t change, tries to stop innovation like Uber, everybody’s trying to figure out how to restrict them - Detroit and Houston have no zoning laws in a lot of parts of the city because all it does it slow things down - we’ve hired people who understand business - we have common sense regulation - we’ve cut taxes and we’re running a surplus and have 420,000 jobs - we’ve reformed criminal justice system and we’re paying attention to mentally ill - the lesson there is forget politics and just solve problems, how hard is that - we’re trapped by ideology
13:34 question on getting congress to work together - Kasich: you work with them and show them respect - call their parents on their birthdays - you get so bored sometimes doing this - i have this new one - one of the problems in this country is overregulation, look at Dodd-Frank - we don’t want big banks but we have rules that kill the little guys - if i’m president i take the most obscure members of congress on both sides - what is the first thing they do? They call their spouse [moderator says I don’t think that’s true]
15:42 if you pick someone who is obscure they have rocket fuel - if you pick someone who is known they have opinions and are hard to work with - you say my VP is going to go through regulations and ask if they want to work with them on it - have a press conference - what’s the first thing they do? Call their spouse and say you won’t believe what just happened - now you have 2 people who are strong advocates for what you want to do - then you hang out with them at the white house - we don’t do that and everyone gets frustrated
17:23 question health care - Kasich: the problem with obamacare doesn’t control increasing cost of health care - there’s one provision i like - no one should lose health insurance because of preexisting condition - i want to have transparency - we have more heart hospitals than we have hearts - we don’t know how they’re doing and neither do you - there’s no transparency on cost and quality - only thing like that
19:23 if this gentleman is in San Francisco and has a knee replacement and this man has one in San Jose there’ll be $10,000 difference and no one knows why - we’re moving forward in OH with transparency - if you are below the mean in quality and price we will give you a financial reward - if you reduce readmissions and mistakes and infection rates and your prices are low we’ll reward you - same with PCPs - if they’re below the median - we would take some of the federal resources and combine with state resources to create your own state exchange
22:17 question on Planned Parenthood - we’re not reducing health care services - some will be in hospitals, some will be in federal clinics - i expanded medicaid - we’ve expanded health care to women - we’re committed to their health
23:37 question on community bank regulation - i’ve already answered it - when we worry about the future this is what i see around the country - they’re poised and they don’t give up - they need to know they were made special - we need regulations that impose legitimate constraints on the big banks - stress tests, liquidity - make sure not overburdening small banks - what do you want to be when you get older - [wants to be public servant] i have 2 girls who are 16 [also a twin] - take advice from Reese and make money before you go into politics
25:55 question on Social Security - it’s not a problem - my friend is here today - he wouldn’t get as much SS as he is entitled to - heard about Zika - where’s the president - we just went through this business with encryption - i still don’t know what’s going on - president should just get them in a room - you lock them in and say you’re not coming out until you have a solution, everyone gives a little
27:54 question on debt - people don’t know what it means - when debt clock, i’m strange, i have a debt clock, i tell everyone when debt goes up jobs go down, when debt goes down, jobs go up, everyone wants free stuff but debt will skyrocket and we’ll have no jobs - pick what you want - i worked on balanced budget for 25 years - anyone who is small business person when debt goes up they are less likely to invest
29:50 question on whether being gay is lifestyle or born that way? I think we’d be better off if we prayed more - religion is about the dos and not the don’ts - loving someone who doesn’t like you - live a life bigger than yourself - don’ts come later down the road - i don’t believe in discrimination, there is a balance between discrimination and religious liberty but we should chill get to know each other better rather than making laws [republicans don’t believe in marriage equality] i believe in traditional marriage but i just went to a gay wedding - questioner asking him if people are born gay - probably - we’re not discriminating against anyone - i’m not in favor of what they’re doing in KY, etc. - they’re not me - i don’t agree with gay marriage but i went to a gay wedding, if someone has deep religious beliefs, if you go to someone to work on your wedding and they don’t agree with it then find someone else - we shouldn’t be pushing each other’s buttons - every time someone writes a law they have to rewrite it -let’s tolerate each other a little more and respect each other’s beliefs - i don’t see any reason to make you feel like a 2nd class citizen - everyone is created in image of lord - some people say they’re religious but not everyone is faithful - do i think people were born gay? Probably but i haven’t studied it
36:24 question on Syria - not by using US troops, i don’t believe in civil war - we should have been supporting the rebels in Syria long ago, created no-fly zones - i would not want to use US forces - i would use them against ISIS as part of a coalition - we’re taking this piecemeal approach that’s not working - time has come to take decisive action against ISIS - sit down with Europe and say get a life - cut the bureaucracy - no one took intel from Turkey to warn Belgium - NATO should be policing and intel gathering organization
38:34 question on using troops - Not for purposes of removing Assad and getting involved in civil war - need to get out of Afghanistan - US forces in Syria to remove Assad is different than going to destroy ISIS
39:46 how to destroy ISIS when Assad is supporting them? Turkey understands this and we’re working with them - they’re trying to kill rebels but not all the rebels, we have people on the ground aiding the rebels - i called McCain and Boehner a long time ago and said anything I can do as governor to help rebels let me know - you can help people you’re for - I am for arming Ukrainians - but not US troops - if Putin wants to disrupt baltics he’s looking at a problem with us directly - i served on defense committee for 18 years
42:00 question on education - people need to start going to community college moore - high school students should be prepared for college and not have to take remedial classes - online education - get smartest business people who look at getting cost drivers out of education - these schools will close - we will have online education at a fraction of the cost - president of OSU is now at WVU - he wanted to lease parking garages - many opposed it - got half a billion dollars which he put into scholarships - Bowling Green used to have dining service - they privatized it - why do universities build dorms? I bet there are developers who are more efficient and more student friendly - have teachers teach more than one course a year - universities should be user friendly to businesses and health research like NIH - debt holding back their ability to be entrepreneurs - open to ways they can work off the debt - can’t just wipe it out and then universities raise cost again - what they’re doing at Purdue with student investment - we need balanced budget amendment - we need task force to make universities make these changes - hold boards of trustees responsible
49:17 question on environment - there are not many industries that want to wreck the environment - i’m not for getting rid of the EPA but they put in regulations that are destructive to employment - i do believe there is climate change but we need to go about it in a reasonable way - battery technology is ultimate solution - i believe in wind and solar and geothermal - need efficiency standards - environment is to be protected not worshipped
51:13 question on cyber security - we have people who are experts and we need to make sure we’re in a position to defend and destroy those who seek to destroy us - just a matter of a presidential initiative - if you work in private sector and I’m president and i ask you to help me solve a problem you’re likely to say no - we need to have a clearing house - if we can do that we need some sort of clearing process, don’t want to ignore or exclude smartest people in the country
55:40 question on criminal justice reform - we’ve done it in OH - we don’t want nonviolent offenders locked up - it’s important when we have judges - i don’t have litmus tests for judges - if you have a nonviolent drug user what will do you based on election? We can’t lock our way out of this problem - not only have we reformed this but we have now moved to ban the box - in govt, can’t do it in private sector - michael vick said you only have one chance to make a good second impression - prison ministry is important - we use all of that so people can know they have second chance unless they’re violent - george will has chronicled some of this - i have best corrections guy in the country - and it’s working pretty well - we’re treating drug addicted in prison - when we treat them and release them with proper follow up, recidivism rate less than 20%
56:46 question on trade - our economy has grown significantly since NAFTA - most trade deals designed to reduce restrictions in other countries - easy to say trade is bad - what happened to american cars when japanese cars came in? They got better - brings in competition - if i run a steel company and i know koreans are dumping steel - you have gather info and take to DC and give them to people who determine whether it’s a trade violation - by the time you get around to it people have lost their jobs - we need early warning system when we suspect trade violations - we’re stuck in early 20th century, we can’t do anything quickly, can’t answer suicide hotline at VA - we have more infrastructure than we need in pentagon and they said no - it’s simple - i run 7th largest state in america - i met with ratings industry - credit on verge of being downgraded - now we have surplus, etc. wages growing faster than natl avg - it works
1:01:18 question on middle class - everyone should read the full story [atlantic may issue cover story] - i look at the story - it’s not as simple as what the headline is - there’s a lot of different reasons for it - i don’t want to pander - guy in story that’s not most americans - are most americans in a position where they feel like they’re falling behind - if you look at the fed - they have low interest rates - people don’t want to hear this - when you have ½% growth and bad recovery - why are we surprised we’re getting sick - let’s talk about the rich - i don’t believe that redistributing the wealth is a good thing - it hasn’t worked anywhere - investment is at historic low - when companies do not invest wages don’t go up - you have to balance budget and cut taxes and regulation - first thing is to address this economics - congress doesn’t want to balance budget - we have to control that - is education system preparing our young people for jobs? What are you waiting on? You want me to fix it? I called my wife and said it’s gorgeous here - what are we waiting on? We have all these initiatives in CA - all these rich guys put all this money in and nothing’s fixed - if you want to be school reformer just bang your head on the wall - i like steph curry - he’s got skills - we’re not giving kids skills - schools are flexible to make kids creative and imaginative - if i let a kid hang out with a mentor it will change his life - we need to have lifelong education - we have 170,000 job openings in OH and we can’t fill them - first thing businesses ask is if you have a workforce, we’re customizing our workforce - i was in NY and they told me Oreo plant leaving for Mexico - would you rather make cookies or computer chips - this economy is changing - you can’t ignore the pain of people being subject to the change - between federal reserve policies and lifelong education those are the things that make us more valuable - productivity and wages are correlated - higher productivity higher wages, lower productivity lower wages
