1. A Journey to Doctorhood
Tom Spicer stared at the 9-year-old boy lying on his table. It was his first patient at La Clinica
de Mariposa in Costa Rica and the only thing he could think was, "Oh, shit.'
Contorted with cerebral palsy and mentally retarded, Phillip was a far cry from the patients Dr. Spicer, a
November 2004 chiropractic graduate from Northwestern Health Sciences University, had seen during his
internships. Nothing in his training prepared him for the feeling of abject helplessness he felt as he looked
at Phillip. There would be no gradual wading into chiropractic. No, Dr. Tom Spicer was thrust into his
professional career -- his doctorhood -- by a boy who couldn't even sit up.

2. Northwestern to Offer Diversity Scholarships for Incoming Students
Northwestern Health Sciences University will offer a diversity scholarship beginning in the winter term of
2005. Two students from Northwestern's chiropractic program and one student each from the
acupuncture and Oriental medicine and massage therapy programs will be selected to receive the
scholarships. The scholarships will provide SO-percent tuition reductions to students entering their
respective programs during the winter and summer terms. Students who receive the scholarships will
continue to receive a 50-percent reduction in tuition as long as they meet eligibility requirements, which
include maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 and demonstrating an ongoing commitment to diversity efforts
at Northwestern.

3. Helping the World's Poor
Northwestern's hand-me-downs could save lives in Third World countries. Becky Peterson,
MLA, instructor, gathered outdated equipment from the clinical pathology labs and urged her colleagues
o do the same in their departments. On Nov. 11, a representative of Project CURE, a nonprofit
humanitarian relief organization, picked up the equipment and will ship it to hospitals and clinics in
countries where even bandages are luxury items.
"[The equipment is] outdated as far as technology here in the United States, but many Third World
communities are using equipment from the 1960s and '70s," says Peterson, who teaches in the clinical
pathology labs. About $32,000 in equipment was donated.
Northwestern Offers Summer Science Academy for Low-Income and Minority Students
In August 2005, Northwestern will offer one of the nation's first free summer science academies geared
toward low-income and minority students. The five-day day camp will offer hands-on, experiential
learning to 50 eighth-graders from the nine-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. During the academy,
attendees will be divided into small groups led by Northwestern students, who will serve as mentors
throughout the program. After a nutritious breakfast, students will have a variety of learning
opportunities, including science experiments, health and wellness demonstrations, and other hands-on
experiences. The purpose of the academy is to build relationships with minority communities, to offer life-
changing experiences for students who have very few role models in the sciences, and to enhance the
cultural competency at Northwestern. For more information, click here.
To refer a student to Northwestern, click here and provide the name, address, and e-mail address (if
known) of the prospective student.
Nominations Accepted for Distinguished Alumnus
The Northwestern College of Chiropractic Alumni Association is soliciting nominations for its annual
Distinguished Alumnus award. To be eligible for nomination, alumni who have graduated from
Northwestern at least five years ago must display outstanding leadership to the profession, the University
or the Alumni Association, and Northwestern; and must display the highest level of integrity. The recipient
of the award is selected by a committee comprised of members of Northwestern's Board of Trustees, the
Alumni Association and previous award winners. To nominate an alumnus, visit
http://www.nwhealth.edu/alumni/cnom.pdf; the deadline is Jan. 8, 2005. Recipients will be announced at
the 2005 Homecoming and Winter Gathering.
Year-End Giving Can Reduce Your Income Taxes
As the giving season begins, consider making a donation to help assure the ability of Northwestern to
fulfill its mission. A year-end gift can significantly reduce your income taxes while providing meaningful
support for Northwestern. If you itemize, you can lower your income taxes simply by writing us a check
by Dec. 31. Gifts of cash are fully deductible — up to a maximum of 50 percent of your adjusted gross
income. Any excess can generally be carried forward and deducted over as many as five subsequent
years. As you know, giving is about much more than tax savings. Your charitable gifts make an important
difference in what we are able to accomplish. Call Brady Forseth, director of development, at (800) 888-
4777, ext. 212 for more information or to make a year-end gift.
