We will focus on opportunities to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, restore soil carbon, and deliver ecosystems services through improved agricultural practices – a topic that is sure to rise in prominence as the world seeks to slow climate change and move toward a net carbon balance (between emissions and sequestration) in the second half of this century. We have planned our agenda with Ernie Shea, our longtime collaborator with 25x’25 and Solutions from the Land, and we look forward to a lively and enlightening discussion of soil and the role the terrestrial resource base can play. Joining us: · Robert Bonnie will discuss the capacity of agricultural working lands to sequester carbon, as well as work under way in USDA to improve soil health. As Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment, he oversees the Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service, working closely with the Farm Service Agency. He previously served as Senior Advisor to Secretary Tom Vilsack for environment and climate change. Prior to joining USDA, he was vice president for land conservation for the Environmental Defense Fund, where he focused on developing incentives to reward farmers, ranchers and forest owners for stewardship activities on private lands. · Wayne Honeycutt is the inaugural President and CEO of the Soil Health Institute<http://www.soilhealthinstitute.org/>, recently established by The Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation and the Farm Foundation to safeguard and enhance the vitality and productivity of the soil.
