"We make a mistake when we think of cancer as a noun. It is not something you have, it is
something you do. Your body is probably cancering all the time. What keeps it under control
is a conversation that is happening between your cells, and the language of that conversation
is proteins. Proteomics will allow us to listen in on that conversation, and that will lead
to much better way to treat cancer."

A week or so ago, Danny Hillis gave the 2010 Edge Master Class in Napa on "Cancering:
Listening In On The Body's Proteomic Conversation." I regret that the mid-August invitation
to some of the busiest people in the world was sent with less than a week's notice. But this
summer I decided to do an East Coast science conference(*) which kept me occupied through
July, and, until I ran into Danny at SciFoo at Google, I had no idea about his new project,
and, in fact, I had never heard the word "poteomics".
The result is that among the regulars, Stewart Brand, Danny and I spent some time at Jacqui
Safra's Spring Mountain Vineyard in St. Helena, and I am pleased to present a private preview
"virtual" Master Class which consists on two one-hour streaming videos with accompanying
audio download and printable text. Watch-listen-read. It's worth your time.
What's missing is the conversation that usually follows (Nathan, Jeff, where were you!!).
Danny is very interested in feedback from he group about the set of ideas he is advancing and
his research project. So let the conversation begin, and I will publish as part of the
"Class" on Wednesday, September 8th.
Please send your comments to me - up to 500 words - either as email text or an ms Word
attachment. (The usual EDGE editorial drill pertains: stick to ideas, empirical research, no
selling from the stage, i.e. referring to your current and future books..."As I say in my
forthcoming book..." No footnotes or hyperlinks.) I will post comments as they come in so
you can track the conversation.
I hope to hear from you.
Best,
