around five million crowd workers in the uk ‘gig economy’ Joint study by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS) and UNI Europa, carried out by University of Hertfordshire, with fieldwork by Ipsos MORI, indicates the true size of the UK’s ‘gig economy’. The findings have prompted calls for further research into the impact on workers’ rights, consumer protection, public health and tax revenues. It is known by many different names: ‘gig economy’, ‘sharing economy’, ‘crowd working’, ‘platform capitalism’ and even ‘uberisation’. But one thing is clear: we are witnessing a phenomenal growth in new forms of work organised via online platforms. Up to now there has been little accurate information about its extent in the UK but, according to the latest research into the scale of this far-reaching change to national work culture, around 11% of online adults aged 16-75, equivalent to five million people, are being paid for work through online platforms like Upwork, Uber and TaskRabbit. In fact, for a substantial proportion of UK crowd workers, it is the only or main source of income. As graphic shows, over a quarter of those willing to divulge this information say they rely on this income as their sole or main source of income. ** Who are the crowd workers? ------------------------------------------------------------ Women are somewhat more likely than men to be crowd workers, with 54% of the crowd workforce female and 46% male. Crowd workers are generally young, with just over half (51%) under the age of 35. Nevertheless, around one crowd worker in six (16%) is over 55 showing that age is no barrier to participating in the gig economy. It is often thought that most crowd workers are students. This is not the case. Only 10% of those actually doing crowd work in the sample were students, a proportion that dropped to 6% among those doing crowd work at least weekly. This is in line with the general proportion of students in the adult population of the UK (at around 8%). After this I make breakfast, sit down, and watch for any work that might come through. I need $100 today to pay the rent, buy some groceries, and pay for my daughter’s school trip, but I’m not sure I’m going to get it. By bedtime, after being at my computer for over 12 hours, I only have $20. Tomorrow I’ll have to work extra hard, or maybe skip breakfast, or I might not make the rent".
