KEY BLOCK----- I have spoken to some of you biefly about the status of public record research on Senator McCain. Based upon Jeff Klueter's email below, there does not seem to be a compehensive approach to this work. Labor (SEIU, NEA, AFSCME, AFL and CDF) comissioned Project New West to start the public record research on Senator McCain. Project New West contracted with Jeff Klueter. He has completed a three volume book but there is much much more to do if we are going to take advantage of Senator McCain's enormous public record in our focus group research, public opinion polling research, earned and paid communications programs. As you know Project New West is an LLC with a large number of subscribers who get access to their package of products (extensive issue research, public record research, focus group reports, polling, etc.) which is warehoused on their password protected website. Subscribers include the DNC, DSCC, some state parties like the Arizona Dem Party, America Votes, the major unions, among many other groups.... Subcribers can also commission research and post it for distribution to other subscribers. I asked Jill Hanauer and Jeff Klueter to put together a proposal for a thorough Mcain research project including a serious dig down in Arizona which needs to start immediately. I am recommending that the Fund commission Project New West to oversee, manage and complete the McCain public record research and that it be distributed through their subscriber network (as allowed by their subscriber agreements) as it is being completed. I will forward to each of you the Phase 2 proposal and I am asking Amy and Frank to review the proposal and to discuss its methodology and costs with Jeff Klueter asap and make a recommendation as to how we proceed to insure that the public record research on Senator McCain is completed in a timely manner. This may be one of the most sigificant contributions we can make to the broader effort. Call me if you have any questions. If you disagree with this approach please don't hesitate to let me know. I am open to other suggestions. John Stocks Deputy Executive Director National Education Association 202-822-7523 Sent from my GoodLink Wireless Handheld (www.good.com) -----Original Message----- From: jeff klueter [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, February 15, 2008 12:24 PM Eastern Standard Time To: Stocks, John [NEA] Subject: PNW Phase Two Presidential Accountability Ressearch John - I just wanted to update you re: my conversations/knowledge on the research we've been discussing as outlined in the recent Phase Two proposal. In re: where things are at right now, I've been canvassing everyone who might have done or be doing any of this in any significant way --- the bigger research firms, the bigger players/funders, the other obvious possibilities like Tom Matzzie, Rosenthal, etc. I spoke to Rosenthal and he indicated that while he had put together a proposal on McCain a while ago, he hasn't done any real McCain research at all. (He did also volunteer that we should talk to Robert Greenwald, whom he thought would be interested in using this material for something.) I've also had a running conversation with Matzzie, who reiterated the understanding we've been working on -- that he and his shop will be doing the day-to-day tracking, rapid inflow/outflow, hand-to-hand stuff -- and looking to us (or someone else) to do the much deeper research. I think the operations we have proposed and his operation will mesh very well together. We also talked about jointly shaping our research process and products so they fit neatly into his polling and communications operations, and there's every reason to believe this will work well. Also as you know from the proposal, I've talked to / gotten general consent from the three other large research firms to participate in all of this -- and obviously the indication that while they've done a few bits and pieces on McCain, that none of them have undertaken any of the large McCain pieces that we're proposing to do. I've also obviously been talking a lot to Jill at PNW about how we work with her and her staff, and how we/she staff this internally to ensure that the research we're conducting is of maximum use and accessibility to PNW and all of the PNW subscribers. Jill and I are on the same page on this and we understand that this is where the wheel really hits the road - ie in creating and putting out stuff in a way that people can actually make good use of it all. That's what I know right now. Let me know if / as you need anything else.
