KEY BLOCK----- *Main Topics: *McCain's Remarks, Oil and Drilling, McCain Ads * Summary of Shift:* The USS Houston appears to have a problem; the US Navy may have been sailing ships around the world with nuclear power plants for sixty years without an accident but that record is showing some leaks. The already heated exchange between the candidates on drilling and energy picks up more steam and a spot on center stage today. Obama releases new ads and with a novelty handout to reporters the reaction from the McCain camp is not difficult to gauge. Discussion on McCain's last series of ads shows no signs of abatement. * **Highlights: * 1. CNN: McCain's remarks to the National Label Company 2. MSNBC: Alter: McCain's way to win "is to try to turn Obama into an uppity and vaguely foreign presence 3. Drilling and Energy a. ABC: Campaigns trade barbs on drilling b. CBS: CBS Evening News covers back and forth on oil 4. FNC: Bounds impugns Obama's "Celebrity" and energy plan *Highlights, No Clips:* 5. NBC - BRIAN WILLIAMS: [Oil prices are down] as both presidential candidates were focused on energy today . . . John McCain today criticized Obama for his opposition to nuclear power and plans to underscore that point with a visit to a nuclear plant in Michigan tomorrow. 6. MSNBC - ROGER SIMON: For a guy who is supposed to have such a famous temper, McCain doesn't really like attacking . . . I think he is often uncomfortable with his own campaign. The Britney and Paris ad, I think will go down in history as visually incoherent., at the end it made McCain . . . look like a grumpy old man. 7. MSNBC - DEL WALTERS: If you're John McCain, the fact that we're talking about race right now is exactly what he wants. If you're John Q. Americanpublic, what you want to hear is which one of these two people will make it more affordable for me to fill up my gas tank, hold on to my house or balance my checkbook. 8. MSNBC - RACHAEL MADDOW: It's a political victory for the Republican Party generally, John McCain specifically on this. That the whole idea of high gas prices has now become a debate on whether or not to drill and drilling would really have no impact on gas prices for, I don't know, a generation, if then. 9. MSNBC: Faiz Shakir weighs in on drilling *Clips:* *Highlight #1* *McCain's Remarks to the National Label Company* (08/04/08 1:37pm) JOHN MCCAIN: We're going to solve the energy crisis that's affecting businesses like National Label Company. And we need an all of the above approach. We need to aggressively develop alternative energies like wind, solar, tide, biofuels, and geothermal, but we also need to expand our use of existing energy resources here at home. That means we need more nuclear power. It means we need clean coal technology. And that means we need to offshore drill for oil and natural gas -- we need to drill here and we need to drill now. And anybody who says we can achieve energy independence without using and increasing these existing energy resources either doesn't have the experience to understand the challenge we face or isn't giving the American people some straight talk. Unfortunately, Senator Obama continues to oppose offshore drilling. He continues to oppose the use of nuclear power. These misguided policies would result in higher energy costs to American families and businesses and increased dependence on foreign oil. We're not going to achieve energy independence by inflating our tires. I'm going to lead our country to energy independence and I'm going to do it with a realistic, comprehensive, all of the above approach that uses every resource available to finally solve this crises. As a lot of Americans know, the Congress, doing nothing, decided to go on a five week recess without addressing the energy challenge that's affecting Americans every single day in their ability to go to work , in their ability to do their jobs, and their ability to keep inflation down as they're trying to do here at the National Label Company and they need a Congress that will act. Congress should come back into session. Congress should come back into session and I'm willing to come off the campaign trail. I call on Senator Obama to call on Congress to come back into town and come back to work, come off their recess, come off their vacation, and address this energy challenge to American and don't leave until we do. Republican and Democrat joining together . And a very vital part of that is nuclear power and another vital part of that is offshore drilling. We have to drill here and drill now. Not wait and see if there's areas to explore, not wait and see whether there's a package that needs to be put together, but drill here and drill now. Let's do- start working for the American people and not for ourselves. So, I hope that Senator Obama will call on Congress and the leaders Harry Reid and Speaker Pelosi, call Congress back into session, let's get this energy crises solved as Americans have been able to solve every challenge that's faced us and move forward and work for America and put America first. Thank you very much. *Highlight #2* *Alter: McCain's Way to Win "Is to Try to Turn Obama into an Uppity and Vaguely Foreign Presence"* (MSNBC 08/04/08 11:28am) TAMRON HALL: And back to politics, John McCain has promised not to run a negative presidential campaign and that's why some are scratching their heads at videos like this one. ["The One" ad plays] HALL: Now, compare that ad with the Britney Spears/Paris Hilton thing and some journalists are asking whether these new attack ads are the new John McCain . . . is this the real McCain? JONATHAN ALTER: There are a lot of people, including the guy who ran his campaign in the year 2000, John Weaver, . . . who believe that the real McCain is not a candidate who would stoop to doing these ads. Even his mother, McCain's mother, called stupid. HALL: So then why are we seeing these ads Jon? ALTER: Because they're like chum in the water for us pirhanas. I mean, what are we doing, we're airing them on television. They're not actually even buying . . . these spots, they're just depending on all of us on cable to air them and disseminate them . . . they're efforts to try to change the subject from the issues . . . now that's totally legit in politics . . . the question though is whether it really is kind of befitting a presidential candidate to do these dopey sorts of ads. HALL: Well, we've seen worse in presidential races in the past. ALTER: We may not have seen it as dopey. HALL: . . . with John McCain, he, he last week said he was OK with the ads. I know it's chum for us in cable news but he did not come out and say, 'OK, on second thought, it wasn't me. This wasn't something I will do again.' So, 'OK, sure, yeah, I'll do it again. ALTER: This is his way to win, is to try to turn Obama into an uppity and vaguely foreign presence, who is out of touch with Americans. To try to turn him into some kind of a snob. Which, for a guy who was on food stamps when he was a kid and worked as a community organizer in Chicago is quite a trick . . . the problem that the old McCainiacs have, the ones that were forced out, and admittedly they are maybe a little bit bitter . . . they have a lot of affection still for John McCain and they want him to get back to the original brand. Which was the maverick reformer. Instead of playing out of Karl Rove's playbook, they want him to go out and play out of John McCain's playbook. They think that would be more authentic for him . . . there's a strong argument on the other side that . . . if you're going to be in politics you have to be very tough and if he's going to win, he has to destroy Barack Obama . . . *Highlight #3 **Campaigns Trade Barbs on Drilling* (ABC 08/04/08 6:45pm) CHARLIE GIBSON: Energy. It is the issue that comes to mind every time you pull up to the gas pump or pay a utility bill. Today, it was the issue for the presidential candidates as they argued over strategies and exchanged pointed attacks . . . JAKE TAPPER: . . . Barack Obama today attacked John McCain as, quote, "being in the pocket of big oil" [ . . . ] TAPPER: . . . the McCain camp says Obama's proposals are not serious. JOHN MCCAIN: We have to drill here and drill now. We are not going to achieve energy independence by inflating our tires. TAPPER: That's a reference to comments Obama made last week when a voter asked him what she could do individually to conserve energy . . . [ . . . ] TAPPER: . . . McCain's campaign mocked the idea today, handing out tire gauges to reporters and offering them to donors who contribute $25 dollars. So why is McCain mocking something that would bring energy savings? Well, probably for the same reason that Sen. Obama is accusing McCain of offering $4 billion dollars in tax breaks to oil companies when in fact what McCain is proposing is an overall corporate tax reduction. Both sides are looking for any advantage and sometimes these attacks are not really honest. *CBS Covers the Back and Forth on Oil* (CBS 08/04/08 6:35pm) DEAN REYNOLDS: With the high price of gasoline looming over the electoral landscape, candidates are being squeezed for solutions. [ . . . ] REYNOLDS: Republicans were quick to ridicule [Obama's] idea, handing out tire gauges labeled "Obama's Energy Plan." JOHN MCCAIN: We're not going to achieve energy independence by inflating our tires. REYNOLDS: Like Obama, McCin once opposed offshore oil drilling but switched a few weeks ago and a short time later received more than $1,000,000 in campaign donations from the oil and gas industries as a new Obama ad notes. [Obama ad plays] REYNOLDS: In July, McCain said it would take a couple of years to see results from the drilling but now he says oilmen tell him it would be much sooner. MCCAIN: The fact is that we can, using existing facilities, expand our oil production within months, according to these executives. REYNOLDS: But that's too optimistic according to the Department of Energy which says it will take nearly a decade to get results from new drilling. McCain also said there's been no progress on energy for nearly thirty years and he assailed the Democratic congress for recessing this summer, of all summers, without a bill. MCCAIN: I call on Senator Obama to call on congress to come back into town and come back to work. REYNOLDS: To which Obama responded, McCain has been in congress for 26 of those 30 years that he finds so unproductive. *Highlight #4* *Bounds Impugns Obama's "Celebrity" and Energy Plan* (FNC 08/04/08 5:05pm) HEATHER NAUERT: Tucker, thanks for joining us. You just heard Frederick Pena . . . one of the things he said is that he didn't want to tap the strategic petroleum reserve but wanted to take some oil out and swap it for something else. What is your reaction to that? TUCKER BOUNDS: . . . our reaction is a typical one. To be honest, 24 days ago when gas cost $4.11 . . . Barack Obama said he would only tap those reserves in case of [makes finger quotes] a genuine emergency [end finger quotes]. And our feeling is that his slipping in the polls 9 points over the course of one week is just the sort of [finger quotes] genuine emergency [end finger quotes] that swings him into action. But the truth is he that he is looks for any excuse out there not to propose and support additional offshore drilling that Americans universally or largely agree with that we need to pursue. NAUERT: But he did said right there he would be willing to take a look at what the bipartisan group and the senate is doing, five Republicans and five members of the Democrats who are looking at doing something more comprehensive and bipartisan approach. What about that? BOUNDS: Well, Heather, what he's talking about doing is supporting a compromise, and he hasn't even gone to a full-throated endorsement of that, to my knowledge. He still opposes offshore drilling. If he supported it, he would call on his Democratic leadership in congress, and tell them to move forward with a proposal. These are people that are in his party that he leads and he's not doing that. The truth is is that he doesn't-- does not support offshore drilling. He said as much Saturday. He didn't say that he supported it today. He has got all sorts of caveats and the American people don't need caveats. They need action. Gas is running at a price that is hurting American families and John McCain's the one that's going to make the change. NAUERT: Let me ask you about that action. John McCain has been saying that he wants to stop campaigning and suggest that he and Barack Obama head to Capitol Hill and do something during this August recess. Has McCain or have you picked up the phone to Obama's spokesman and said hey, let's together stop campaigning this August, let's head to Washington and do something to resolve this gas issue? BOUNDS: You know, it is a good thing. I think people do want their leaders in Washington to actually make changes, which is why John McCain is running for president. We haven't called the Obama campaign, to my knowledge. We may have. I can tell you when we proposed ten town hall meetings . . . they were opposed to that. It seems that John McCain's worldwide celebrity doesn't match up to Barack Obama's immense enormous worldwide celebrity and they don't like to appear in the same place with us. They think it downgrades their star appeal. We're just looking to get things done. We would like for them to meet us on Capitol Hill and work for a compromise that could bring offshore drilling and comprehensive energy into the homes of Americans. People want change right now. -- Evan Whitbeck Tracker/Media Analyst Progressive Accountability Office [email protected] 202-609-7677 (w) 360-480-0786 (c) --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the "big campaign" group.
