We need to aggressively develop alternative energies like wind, solar, tide, biofuels, and geothermal, but we also need to expand our use of existing energy resources here at home. That means we need more nuclear power. It means we need clean coal technology. And that means we need to offshore drill for oil and natural gas -- we need to drill here and we need to drill now. And anybody who says we can achieve energy independence without using and increasing these existing energy resources either doesn't have the experience to understand the challenge we face or isn't giving the American people some straight talk. REYNOLDS: Like Obama, McCin once opposed offshore oil drilling but switched a few weeks ago and a short time later received more than $1,000,000 in campaign donations from the oil and gas industries as a new Obama ad notes. McCain also said there's been no progress on energy for nearly thirty years and he assailed the Democratic congress for recessing this summer, of all summers, without a bill. You just heard Frederick Pena . . . one of the things he said is that he didn't want to tap the strategic petroleum reserve but wanted to take some oil out and swap it for something else. What is your reaction to that? TUCKER BOUNDS: . . . our reaction is a typical one. To be honest, 24 days ago when gas cost $4.11 . . . Barack Obama said he would only tap those reserves in case of [makes finger quotes] a genuine emergency [end finger quotes]. And our feeling is that his slipping in the polls 9 points over the course of one week is just the sort of [finger quotes] genuine emergency [end finger quotes] that swings him into action. But the truth is he that he is looks for any excuse out there not to propose and support additional offshore drilling that Americans universally or largely agree with that we need to pursue. NAUERT: But he did said right there he would be willing to take a look at what the bipartisan group and the senate is doing, five Republicans and five members of the Democrats who are looking at doing something more comprehensive and bipartisan approach. What about that? BOUNDS: Well, Heather, what he's talking about doing is supporting a compromise, and he hasn't even gone to a full-throated endorsement of that, to my knowledge. He still opposes offshore drilling. If he supported it, he would call on his Democratic leadership in congress, and tell them to move forward with a proposal. These are people that are in his party that he leads and he's not doing that. The truth is is that he doesn't-- does not support offshore drilling. He said as much Saturday. He didn't say that he supported it today. He has got all sorts of caveats and the American people don't need caveats. They need action. Gas is running at a price that is hurting American families and John McCain's the one that's going to make the change. NAUERT: Let me ask you about that action. John McCain has been saying that he wants to stop campaigning and suggest that he and Barack Obama head to Capitol Hill and do something during this August recess. Has McCain or have you picked up the phone to Obama's spokesman and said hey, let's together stop campaigning this August, let's head to Washington and do something to resolve this gas issue? BOUNDS: You know, it is a good thing. I think people do want their leaders in Washington to actually make changes, which is why John McCain is running for president. We haven't called the Obama campaign, to my knowledge. We may have. I can tell you when we proposed ten town hall meetings . . . they were opposed to that. It seems that John McCain's worldwide celebrity doesn't match up to Barack Obama's immense enormous worldwide celebrity and they don't like to appear in the same place with us.
